The laboratory datas are for local scour depth measurement at vertical-wall abutment. These include the data to demonstrate the effects of local scour depth of abutment nose shape, alignment angle, flow depth and flume slope. The pattern of local scour were measured and analyzed the abutments which are rectangular, sharp, chamfered rectangular and ablong nose shapes. The experiments were carried out with varing the flume slope and alignment algle increasing flow depth every step in 1cm for four abutment types on the live-bed scour conditions. The flume slope and alignment angle were varied in five cases : for latter 30 $^{\circ}$, 60 $^{\circ}$, 90 $^{\circ}$, 120 $^{\circ}$ and 150 $^{\circ}$, for former 0.01%, 0.03%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2%. The maximum scour depths were analyzed for the shaped of abutment nose with rectangular, ablong, chamfered rectangular and sharp in order. The results of the experiments show that the scour depth varies not only with abutment nose shapes and alignment angle but also with the flow depth and flume slope.

In the study, experiments are performed in the mixing region combined wave and current to investigate the characteristics of local scour around a slender pile. Wave generator and current generator are used for the experiments and currents are co-directions with the waves. The local scour depths around the pipeline are obtained according to the various pipe diameters, wave periods, wave heights, and current velocities. The experiments show that the maximum equilibrium local scour depth increases with pipe diameter, wave period, wave height, and current velocity. Using the experimental results, the correlations of scour depth and parameters such as Shields parameter ($\theta$), Froude number (Fr), Keulegan-Carpenter number (KC), Ursell number ($U_R$), modified Ursell number ($U_{RP}$) and ratio of velocities ($U_c/U_c+U_m$) are analyzed. In the mixing region combined with waves and currents, The Froude number of single parameters is the main parameter to cause the local scour around a slender pile due to waves and current and this means that current governs the scour within any limits of the currents.
In this experimental research, the maximum scour depth at pier was studied. The model of the pier of San Gye bridge in the Bocheong stream was set for experimental pier scour studies. Several model verification processes were conducted through the roughness comparisons between model and prototype, pursuring scour depth variations with time depending upon channel bed variation, the comparison of the ratio between falling velocities and shear velocities in the model and prototype, and the comparison of pier scour between experimental data and field measuring data. The experiments were conducted in the free flow conditions and pressure flow conditions. The maximum scour depth at piers in the pressure flow conditions is twice as much as compared to the free flow conditions. Also, the maximum scour depth variations are indicated in the figures based on the Froude numbers, opening ratios, water depths and approaching angles in the free surface flow conditions.
More than 100 bridges in Korea have been annually collapsed or badly damaged by the scouring around bridge piers, particularly in the flood season. To prevent from such a tragedy, the fundamental study on the bridge scouring is required, which is essential not only to estimate the scour depth with reliability but to take it into consideration in its design. However, it is not easy to find out the physical scour mechanism since many factors on the scour are coupled with. Moreover, there exists none of the measured data sufficiently for the primary research on the bridge scour depths. In this study the field measurements are carried out to provide the fundamental data for the research and the design. Scouring depth, pier width, flow depth, and the approaching velocity and degree of pier nose are measured broadly in small and medium streams. From these measurements the present situation on bridge scours can be understood and some of important factors to affect the stability of bridges are analyzed.

Artificial Intelligence-based techniques have been applied to problems where mathematical relations can not be presented due to complicatedness of the physical process. A representative example in hydraulics is the local scour around bridge piers. This study presents a GEP model for predicting the local scour around bridge piers. The model is trained by 64 laboratory data to build the regression equation, and the constructed model is verified against 33 laboratory data. Comparisons between the models with dimensional and normalized variables reveals that the GEP model with dimensional variables predicts better. The proposed model is now applied to two field datasets. It is found that the MAPE of the scour depths predicted by the GEP model increases compared with the predictions of local scours in laboratory scale. In addition, the model performance increases significantly when the model is trained by the field dataset rather than the laboratory dataset. The findings suggest that apart from the ANN model, GEP model is a sound and reliable model for predicting local scour depth.
This paper presents a machine learning technique applied to prediction of time-dependent local scour around bridge piers in both non-cohesive and cohesive beds. The support vector machines (SVM), which is known to be free from overfitting, is used. The time-dependent scour depths are expressed by 7 and 9 variables for the non-cohesive and cohesive beds, respectively. The SVM models are trained and validated with time series data from different sources of experiments. Resulting Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) indicates that the models are trained and validated properly. Comparisons are made with the results from Choi and Choi's formula and Scour Rate in Cohesive Soils (SRICOS) method by Briaud et al., as well as measured data. This study reveals that the SVM is capable of predicting time-dependent local scour in both non-cohesive and cohesive beds under the condition that sufficient data of good quality are provided.

As offshore structures such as offshore wind and offshore platforms have been installed frequently in ocean, scour effects are considered important. To test the scour effect, numerical simulation of scour has been carried out. However, the test was usually conducted under the uni-directional flow without bi-directional current flow in western sea of Korea. Thus, in this paper, numerical simulations of scour around offshore jacket substructure of HeMOSU-1 installed in western sea of Korea are conducted using FLOW-3D. The conditions are uni-directional and bi-directional flow considering tidal current. And these results are compared to measured data. The analysis results for 10,000 sec show that under uni-directional conditions, maximum scour depth was about 1.32 m and under bidirectional conditions, about 1.44 m maximum scour depth occurred around the structure. Meanwhile, about 1.5~2.0 m scour depths occurred in field observation and the result of field test is similar to result under bi-directional conditions.

Since the industrialization in the 1960s, Korea has been expanding its transportation infrastructure, such as building bridges. Owing to bridge construction, studies on stability review have been carried out, and stability-securing technology has been developed. On the other hand, these were applied mainly to the upper part of the bridge, so applications to the lower part are limited. In particular, scour at the bridge pier causes erosion in the riverbed and bridge collapse. Hence, prevention studies and countermeasures are needed. In this study, an empirical formula was developed to evaluate the scour depth of a bridge, which was calculated through multiple linear regression analysis using the hydraulic model study data conducted in previous studies. The formula, which had a value of 0.91, was applied to the model test data that was not used for development to verify the developed formula. When the pier scour depths were compared in 23 cases, the error rate was less than 20% in 16 cases (70%). The empirical formula developed in this study is applicable to pier scour-depth calculations. Further research will be needed to develop a more accurate empirical formula for pier scour-depth calculations, and it is expected to reduce bridge damage caused by scour.
In order to understand the characteristics of the topography change in front of an impermeable breakwater, a coupled model for a two-way analysis of the existing LES-WASS-2D and newly developed morphodynamic model was suggested. A comparison to existing experimental results revealed that the results computed using the 2-D hydro-morphodynamic model were in good agreement with the experimental results for the wave form, pore water pressure in the seabed, and topographical change in front of a submerged breakwater. It was shown that the two-way model suggested in this study is applicable to a morphological change in the seabed around a submerged breakwater. Then, using the numerical results, the topographical changes in front of an impermeable submerged breakwater were examined in relation to partial standing waves. Moreover, the characteristics of the local scour depths in front of them are also discussed in relation to incident wave conditions, sediment qualities, and submerged breakwater shapes.

The purpose of this study is to identify the downstream influences due to the dam discharge by using 2-dimensional model, SMS(Surface water Modeling System). RMA-2 and SED-2D in SMS were applied to Yongdam multipurpose dam watershed located in Gum river basin. Through the simulation, erosion and deposit quantitative analysis of sinuous channels and scour pattern analysis of bridges have been done. A differences erosion depths between deposit are simulated as $-102.4 mm{\sim}54.2 mm$ at No.176(1.4 km) and $-104.1 mm{\sim}28.9 mm$ at No.146(7.4 km), sinuous channel. The river bed at Kamdong bridge in straight channal is simulated as uniform erosion. However, the river bed at Dumdul bridge in sinuous channal has been shown as different erosion depths at each sides. Consequently, the parts that could not be simulated on the existing 1-dimensional model, can be improved results by using a 2-dimensional model, about weakness points for hydraulic modeling such as extreme bend, tributary confluence.
