  • This research deals with the problems encountered in designing systems for more efficient and effective information retrieval used in the proliferation of literature. This research was designed to develop and test 1) the partitioning a large bibliographic data base into quality oriented subsets (quality filtering), and 2) a system for effective and efficient Information retrieval within subsets of data base (relevance). In order to accomplish this partitioning, the 'kernel' technique of graph theory was applied. In addition, a method of quality filtering utilizing the 'epidemic' theory and the 'obsolescence' of scientific literature was developed.

  • Frei Otto, who is called to be the father of the ecological architecture, has shaped a peculiar architectural form style. In distance from the formalistic persistence to the modernist form canon and the postmodern tendencies to the self-representation of architects, Frei Otto has taken a more fundamentalistic position. Through the interdisciplinary researches on the self-organizing processes in the nature and the technical world Frei Otto could reason with architects, engineers, biologists, historians and philosophers the principle and structure of the natural construction that is applicable to the morphological research and the architectural construction research. In the middle of his architectural and scientific works is the idea of 'the natural construction' situated, and the basic principle and instrument of this 'Die Prinzip der Selbstbildung, The Principle of Self-making'. Founding himself on this principle, Frei Otto seeks after the new architectural form that is light, natural, flexible and variable by reasoning the typical formation process which refers to the common denominator of the self-making processes in the nature, the technique and the architecture. Despite his architecture is to be called to the anonymous, his architectural vision is headed toward the rationalistic form in accord with the natural laws. This study is purposed to elucidate the constellation to which his scientific attempts belong and the theoretical and methodological foundations of his architecture of 'the natural construction'.

  • In recent years, many computer systems that are used for patient diagnostic and treatment purpose s are being introduced within hospitals. Therefore, being in a position to manage the hospital entirely, efforts to integrate their own unique system into one have started. A system values humans and creates the surrounding atmosphere into one which maximizes the abilities of individuals. For this, a scientific integration management operation system is required. The type of system that is demanded due to this requirement is an ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) system. Lately, even the hospital industry is beginning to show interest in efficient administrative methods. To deliver more predominant medical services, hospitals are trying to introduce scientific administrative methods, whose superiority were proven in enterprises, to the operation system of the hospital organization. ERP values humans over systems, and within a superior system, emphasizes the efficiency of the organization. This sort of process does not just evaluate and manage the working abilities of individuals, but provides an advanced working environment that increases the abilities of members within the organization by fold. Therefore, this research estimates through questionnaires and introductive cases how the introduction of ERP may change the work of customers within hospitals such as the radiologic technology department, and how it may also change the environment of medical services, thus striving to create a radiologic technology department that will not fall behind the times.

Pre-service Elementary Teachers Difficulties in Science Lessons (초등 예비교사들이 과학 수업에서 겪는 어려움)

  • The purpose of this study was to get an implication on teacher education program, by exploring the difficulties pre-service elementary teachers have with their science lessons. 37 pre-service teachers were requested to write an anecdote about their science lessons during their 4 week practicum. By analyzing these anecdotes, the difficulties were grouped into several categories by the researcher, and then reconfirmed by the pre-service teachers themselves. The result showed that there were far more difficulties with practical work (cases: 48), than with content knowledge teaching (cases: 17). Among practical work related difficulties, the most frequent cases were: 1) when they have unexpected result different from scientific theory (cases: 10), 2) when they teach process skill and usage of lab equipments (cases: 8), and 3) when they do not have enough preparation for practical work (cases: 7). Unlike the result of preceding research on secondary pre-service teachers, there was no affective aspect problems. These difficulties also can be divided into 'problems' and 'dilemmas'. Whereas 'problems' can be settled by removing obstacles, 'dilemmas', a conflict-filled situation, require choices between competing values or aims. The use of scientific language, the decision on the level and amount of knowledge they teach, and disposal of unexpected experiment results caused such dilemmas in science lessons. The research results imply practical work should be more strengthened in the elementary teacher education program. And both teacher educators and pre-service teachers need to understand that practical teaching is a complex enterprise accompanying some 'dilemmas'. The role of science teachers as managers of dilemmas could be considered.

Information Technologies in The Process of Teaching Foreign Languages in Higher Educational Institutions

  • An anthological analysis of known literature and historical sources is carried out in the work. It was found that the development of foreign language training of future professionals was influenced by a number of factors: socio-economic (focus on the needs of the labor market, integration into the international space, scientific and technological progress); educational (updating legal documents in the field of education, standardization of educational content, development of methods of professional development of a specialist). The historical period is analyzed and the following stages are determined: ideological (realization of ideological imperative in language and professional training of future specialists; educational-methodical (preparation according to unified curricula, reading and translation as a leading type of speech activity); integration (integration of foreign language teaching and multicultural education)), methodological (use of traditional verbal methods, standardized textbooks). Thus, the research conducted in the article indicates the periods (stages) of formation, functioning and development of foreign language education.

Construction of a Structural Equation Model on Attitudes to Science Using LISREL (LISREL을 이용한 과학에서의 태도에 관한 구조방정식모델의 구축)

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a structural equation model and to analyze causal relationships among variables related to attitudes to science using structural equation modeling(SEM) with LISREL VII. The sample consisted of 483 10th grade boys from a general high school in Pusan, Korea. The questionnaires (ABC-attitude scale: affection, behavioral intention, cognition scale of attitude towards science) were developed by the researcher through a pilot study. And other instruments have modified previous ones. Five instruments were used in this study: GALT(group assessment of logical thinking), MTSlS(modified test of science inquiry skill), ABC-attitude scale, MSAS(modified scientific attitude scale), CSAT(common science achievement test). Structural equation modeling with LISREL VII($J\ddot{o}reskog$ & $S\ddot{o}rbom,$ 1993) was employed to estimate the causal inferences about hypothesized relationships among observed data sets. Three competing models consisted of five latent variable(scientific thinking ability, science inquiry skill, attitude towards science, scientific attitude, science achievement) - lP(inquiry preceding) model, AP(attitude preceding) model and AM(attitude mediating) model - were developed. Among these competing models, IP model satisfied the observed data sets. The causal relationships among "attitudes to science" and other latent variables were reliably identified. According to the results of the present study, science inquiry skill was the most significant variable that can predict science achievement. But scientific thinking ability has not directly influenced science achievement. This study suggests that inquiry based teaching-learning processes should be offered to students for improvement of science achievement. At the same time, it seems to be important to develop positive attitude towards science. Understanding of relationships among variables related to attitudes to science will be helpful to the development of science curriculum and to the design of science teaching and learning process. LISREL has been recognized as a useful approach in testing a SEM. However, in this study, LISREL approach was estimated as much more useful method for research design.

  • This paper is being established in Sungkyunkwan University based on a new lecture, "Scientific and Technical Writing and Presentation". The course feature and core educational goal is mainly to focus on challenging students to be able to learn scientific engineering communication, recognizing problem and solving it which involve a basic process of formulating thinking and expression skills. Basically, Scientific and Technical Writing and Presentation lecture is a blended learning that will put students in various type of problem based learning (PBL) in order to distinctively build their problem solving skills and emphasizing self-leadership skills in their profession. Through group activity participants in this learning area will be exposed to more specific problems to ensure more individual participation and in the same time they will be able to actively review the objective of their own activity which are part of this course objectives.

  • With the development of the economy, people's utilization of underground space are also improved, and a large number of cities have begun to build subways to relieve traffic pressure. The choice of subway station construction method is crucial. If an inappropriate construction method is selected, it will not only waste costs but also cause excessive deformation that may also threaten construction safety. In this paper, a subway station construction scheme selects model based on the AHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. The rationality of the model is verified using numerical simulation and monitoring measurement data. Firstly, considering the economy and safety, a comprehensive evaluation system is established by selecting several indicators. Then, the analytic hierarchy process is used to determine the weight of the evaluation index, and the dimensionless membership in the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the construction method. Finally, the method is applied to Liaoyang east road station of Qingdao metro Line 2, and the results are verified by numerical simulation and monitoring measurement data. The results show that the model is scientific, practical and applicable.

An algorithm for evaluating time-related human reliability using instrumentation cues and procedure cues

  • The performance time of human operators has been recognized as a key aspect of human reliability in socio-complex systems, including nuclear industries. Because of the importance of the time factor, most existing human reliability assessment methods provide ways to quantify human error probabilities (HEPs) that are associated with the performance time. To quantify such kinds of HEPs, it is crucial to rationally predict the length of time required and time available and compare them. However, there have not been detailed guidelines that identify the critical cue presentation time or initial time of human performance, which is important to calculate the time information. In this paper, we introduce a time-related HEP calculation technique with a decision algorithm that determines the critical cue and its timing. The calculation process is presented with the application examples. It is expected that the proposed algorithm will reduce the variability in the time-related reliability assessment and strengthen the scientific evidence of the assessment process.   • The share of the population that is aging is growing rapidly. In an aging society, technologies and interventions that delay the aging process are of great interest. Dietary restriction (DR) is the most reproducible and effective nutritional intervention tested to date for delaying the aging process and prolonging the health span in animal models. Preventive effects of DR on age-related diseases have also been reported in human. In addition, highly conserved signaling pathways from small animal models to human mediate the effects of DR. Recent evidence has shown that the immune system is closely related to the effects of DR, and functions as a major mechanism of DR in healthy aging. This review discusses the effects of DR in delaying aging and preventing age-related diseases in animal, including human, and introduces the molecular mechanisms that mediate these effects. In addition, it reports scientific findings on the relationship between the immune system and DR-induced longevity. The review highlights the role of immunity as a potential mediator of the effects of DR on longevity, and provides insights into healthy aging in human.
