We present a creative program model for encouraging the creative ability of gifted students by using overlapped patterns found in every day life. This model is based on the basic concept that the purpose of physics education is enlightenment from around the world. Combining both the Western perspective of creativity as productivity and the Eastern perspective of creativity as enlightenment, a Program for Enlightened and Productive Creativity(PEPC) for teaching inquiry was devised. This Program for Enlightened and Productive Creativity describes stages through which a student is guided to solve a problem using increasingly complex observation, inquiry, and experimentation. The use of this model in teaching is illustrated through a physics lesson of moire patterns using overlapping patterns found in our every day life. A case is made that PEPC can be applied to teaching general students as well as gifted students and in different content areas. PEPC model is applied to general students in middle school, scientifically gifted students and physics teachers.
The purpose of this study is to develop STEAM program for gifted education by combining educational contents of humanities, arts, engineering, technology, and design into various subjects, focusing on mathematics-science curriculum of elementary school. The achievement standards and curriculum contents of elementary mathematics-science curriculum were analyzed while considering 2015 revised national curriculum. And then, a 16 class-hour convergence education program consisting of 3-hour block time was developed by applying the STEAM model with 4 steps. The validity of the program developed through this process was verified, and four educational experts evaluate whether the program can be applied to the elementary school. Based on the evaluation results, the convergence education program was finalized. As a result of implementing the gifted education program for mathematics-science, students achieved the objectives and values of convergence education such as creative design, self-directed participation, cooperative learning, and interest in class activities (game, making). If this convergence education program is applied to regular class, creative experiential class, or class for gifted children, students can promote their scientific creativity, artistic sensitivity, design sence, and so on.

In this research, we tried to discover the characteristics of gifted students by analyzing their experience in showing task commitment. In order to do this, we asked science gifted students to specifically describe their experiences while deeply experimenting on a scientific cause or theory. From their responses, we inductively explored the characteristics of science gifted students by extracting and analyzing the characteristics that show task commitment. Consequentially, the characteristics of the gifted students are divided into nine categories, which are confidence, setting a challenging goal, challenging approach for solving problems, sense of potential control, loss of self-consciousness, time distortion, submission to difficult task, initiative, and endurance, all of which appear repeatedly among the gifted students. With consensus among three experts who have experience in research on gifted education, these nine characteristics can be categorized into 3 characteristics; challenge, flow, and willingness. The three characteristics such as challenge, flow, and willingness well represent a definition of task commitment. These characteristics can explain the level of task commitment exhibited by science gifted students. It is possible to develop the tool and framework for judging the task commitment of gifted students on the basis of their characteristics.
The purpose of this study was to analyse characteristics of explanatory writing of scientifically gifted students who participated in gifted educational programs. Considering aspect of content of their explanations about cell, many of them explained the common characteristics of animal and plant cells, but a few of them did cellular characteristics of one kind of animal and plant. Some gifted students regarded cell membrane function as that of cell wall, and had a misconception that the cell was the smallest unit to consist human body. In terms of the structure of explanation, most of them didn't know the structural characteristics of explanatory writing. Finally, more than 50% of them had written using various ways to explain cell such as classifying, comparing, contrasting and exemplifying. Especially, all biologically gifted students had creatively explained drawing a picture. It was findings that the explanatory writing could be used as the instrument to evaluate knowledges of gifted students and suggested the elements of writing to teach scientific explanatory writing.
Students' perception on a science program for gifted was investigated. The whole program was designed in consistency and integrity based on the Autonomous Learner Model suggested by Betts & Kercher(1999). 7th, 8th and 9th grade students were enrolled in this program, offered by G Education Institute for Gifted(GEI) located in Seoul. A survey was done to ask students' perception regarding the effect of the program. The survey consisted of statements about the expected effects of the program and students were asked if they agreed with the statements. Most students strongly agreed that GEI's program has positive effects. Students replied that they learned useful and interesting science contents, enjoyed meaningful experience of cooperating with members in small groups, and were challenged by the inquiry tasks. They recognized that they were being trained to become autonomous learners. They also said that their choices and decisions were respected, which resulted in positive effects on their ability to negotiate or to inquire actively. These implies that Autonomous Learner Model had been successfully applied. Although it was not clear autonomy of students was fully grown, the possibility of becoming an autonomous learner was evident. Satisfaction level is higher for the older students, implying that the integrity in the program gave accumulating effect. Students response showed that three sub-programs of GEI, the classes of each subject, conference at the end of the year and autonomous learner training played equally important role for students to learn the process of scientific inquiry and autonomous learning. This was a positive sign that the strategies for scientific inquiry and autonomous learning were embedded and integrated deeply in the program. The results of current research suggests that the integrity of a program based on a specific education model for the gifted could provide better education environment for the gifted students.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the summer enrichment programs on Korean gifted students' science learning and creativity development. This program is organized by Purdue University Gilled Education Resource Institute (GERI) in U.S.A. Researchers conducted semi-structured interview with 6 Korean students and observed 12 Korean students and GERI teachers for teacher-student interaction and teaching strategies during science-related classes. From the results, GERI program developed from Purdue 3 stage enrichment model that emphasizes creative teaching strategies, group discussions, and individual research were effective to foster creative thinking of Korean gilled students. Despite their language barriers, Korean gilled students found GERI program experience fun, creative, easy, relaxing, and thereby satisfying for their psychological and academic needs. They expected the level of stimulation in GERI program to be higher and the class to be organized more systematically; however, they reported that the broad range of topics and diverse content of GERI classes helped them develop creativity more than Korean classes. These findings will make contribution to the improvement of the quality of gifted education curriculum and programming in Korea.
The study aimed to investigate elementary school gifted students' hypothesis-generating ability and characteristics of hypotheses and to analyze the correlation between hypothesis-generating ability and meta-cognition. Nineteen students enrolled in a science gifted education center affiliated with a university in 2013 were selected as research subjects. An instrument of open ended items about hypothesis generating was developed and administered to students, and their meta-cognition as well as their preferred science teaching method were examined. Hypotheses generated by students were classified into two categories: scientific and non-scientific hypotheses, and then a closer analysis was conducted on characteristics of non-scientific hypotheses. It was found that 47% (18 out of 38 hypotheses) was scientific ones showing that elementary school gifted students in science in this study presented low level of ability in generating hypothesis. It was also found that non-scientific hypotheses frequently showed characteristics of uncertain in causality or impossible to verify relationships. Furthermore, differences in hypothesis-generating ability and characteristics of hypotheses were appeared in conditions whether inquiry questions and variable identification process were given or not. Students showed high abilities in hypothesis generating and variable identifying when inquiry questions and variable identification process were given. Compared to previous research results, students in the study showed high level of meta-cognition and tendency of utilizing monitoring strategy more than planning and regulating. In ill-structured conditions that students themselves find inquiry questions and identify variables, a significant (p<.05) correlation appeared between hypothesis generating ability and meta-cognition and a high level of correlation between planning and regulating strategies. It was also found that differences existed in hypothesis-generating ability and preferred science teaching methods between students with high level and those with low level of meta-cognition; and students with low level of meta cognition showed difficulties in generating hypothesis and identifying variables.
This study is a case study of the process of emerging for creative products to lead world science and technology. The aim of the study is to understand the emerging process of scientific creative products, and is to provide the direction of gifted education that discovers and trains globally competitive science talents through this. To discuss the emerging process of creative products, this study has academically discussed the creativity of the complexity of dealing with theory of evolution, the real life settings, and self-organization of experience etc., and has methodologically adopted the qualitative research method through a case study to look at the structures and processes. Data collection has been formed through a discussion with 12 Korean scientists who have created selected creative products, greatly contributed for the world science and technology(12 areas). The analysis has been carried out by the latter part positivist methods. As a result, the emerging process of creative products in the field of science and technology were separated into four steps: (1)the foundation stage of knowledge, (2)the exploration stage of knowledge, (3)the construction stage of knowledge, and (4)the emerging stage of knowledge. Each stage has been revealed growing up through the macro-system and the self-organization of each micro-systems.
We studied what kind of science-contents problems can also give information on one's creativity for use in the selection of scientifically gifted. 383 7th and 8th graders as subjects, we first analyzed the corelation between the results of creative thinking, scientific attitude, science inquiry, logical thinking and the scientific creativity problem solving skill test. The corelation analysis indicated that science inquiry test could represent other tests except TTCT. We then tested 532 6th graders with TTCT and science inquiry tests concomitantly with the contents- related problems made in such types as naming 20 scientists, writing about a scientist, imagination to overcome a problem, understanding of theory and application and understanding of science laws and application. The results indicated that writing and imagination were most efficient in assessing both the contents and the creativity.
The purpose of this study is to develop program that take a genuine interest in science and motivate students to keep up their study for science gifted children of start period. In this study, we develop and apply the program about sinking and floating for elementary science gifted students, and analyse degree of conceptual change. Students' prior knowledge is analysed for developing the program, and each step is settled about concept of density and buoyancy. Conceptests are arranged into step by step, and we apply the program to 26 science gifted students of 6th grade elementary school. We compare a percentage of correct answers of pre-test and post-test and evaluate Hake gain for analysis of degree of conceptual change. As a result, science gifted students' concepts are changed effectively into scientific concepts by program based on peer instruction for gifted students of start period. And they evaluate the program is novel and useful, also they can be motivated by the program.
