  • This paper presents a heuristic algorithm for a crew scheduling problem with dead head flights. This paper modifies and improves saving method for finding the Multiple Salesman tours in the graph. The results show that the computing time from this algorithm is implemented very much than those from general crew scheduling algorithms by set covering models.

  • Grid computing, a mechanism which uses heterogeneous systems that are geographically distributed, draws attention as a new paradigm for the next generation operation of parallel and distributed computing. The importance of grid computing concerning communication cost is very huge because grid computing furnishes uses with integrated virtual computing service, in which a number of computer systems are connected by a high-speed network. Therefore, to reduce the execution time, the scheduling algorithm in grid environment should take communication cost into consideration as well as computing ability of resources. However, most scheduling algorithms have not only ignored the communication cost by assuming that all tasks were dealt in one cluster, but also did not consider the overhead of communication cost when the tasks were processed in a number of clusters. In this paper, the functions of original scheduling algorithms are analyzed. More importantly, the functions of algorithms are compared and analyzed with consideration of communication cost within the co allocation environment, in which a task is performed separately in many clusters.

  • This paper proposes an efficient and differentiated MAC scheduling algorithm for Bluetooth systems. The proposed algorithm guarantees QoS (Quality of Service) requirement of each master-slave pair or application. Conventional MAC scheduling algorithms for Bluetooth take priority of each pair into consideration and demonstrate relatively reasonable performance. However, their performances may depend on traffic characteristic, or they are limited by overheads for signaling. In this paper, we propose a new MAC scheduling algorithm superior to the conventional algorithms from the viewpoints of throughput, delay, and supporting QoS. Our proposed algorithm is evaluated via computer simulations under various environments and compared with the conventional scheduling algorithms. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm shows better performance than the existing algorithms, and can support the QoS demand of each pair.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheduling algorithms in OFDM systems to reduce inter-cell interference. The proposed algorithm applies different subcarrier allocation sequences for different cells which is optimized through integer programming to minimize inter-cell interference. System level simulation is executed to derive the performance of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling algorithm improves user fairness as well as throughput compared with previous algorithms and therefore improves support of user QoS.

  • The end-to-end rate-based control mechanism is used for the flow control of the ABR service to allow much more flexibility in ATM switching system. To accommodate the ABR service effciently many algorithms such as EFCI, EPRCA, ERICA, and CAPC2 have been proposed for the switch algorithm. ABR cells and related RM cells are received at the ATM switch fabric transparently without any processing. And then cells received from the traffic source are queued in the ABR buffer of switching system. The ABR buffer usually has some thresholds for easy congestion control signal transmission. Whatever we use, therefore, these can be many ABR traffic control algorithms to implement the ABR transfer capability. The genertion of congestion indicate signal for ABR control algorithms is determined by ABR buffer satus. And ABR buffer status is determined by ABR cells transfer ratio in ATM switch fabrics. In this paper, we presented the functional structures for control of the ABR traffic capability, proposed the readout scheduling, cell slot allocation of output link and the buffer allocation model for effective ABR traffic guranteeing with considering CBR/VBR traffics in ATM switch. Since the proposed readout scheduling scheme can provide more avaliable space to ABR buffer than existing readout scheduling scheme, generation rate of a SEND signal, that is, BCN signal in destination node can be increased for ABR call connection. Therefore, the proposed scheme, in this paper, can be appropriate as algorithm for effective ABR traffic service on output link of ATM switching node.

  • The scheduling algorithms to provide quality of service (QoS) in broadband convergence network (BcN) are compared and analysed. The main QoS management methods such as traffic classification, traffic processing in the input queue and weighted queueing are first analysed, and then the major scheduling algorithms of round robin, priority and weighted round robin under recently considering for BcN to supply real time multimedia communications are analysed. The simulation results by NS-2 show that the scheduling algorithm with proper weights for each traffic class outperforms the priority algorithm.

  • The university course scheduling problem (UCSP) aims at optimally arranging courses to corresponding rooms, faculties, students, and timeslots with constraints. Previously, the university staff solved this thorny problem by hand, which is very time-consuming and makes it easy to fall into chaos. Even some meta-heuristic algorithms are proposed to solve UCSP automatically, while most only utilize one single algorithm, so the scheduling results still need improvement. Besides, they lack an in-depth analysis of the inner algorithms. Therefore, this paper presents a novel and practical approach based on Tabu search and simulated annealing algorithms for solving USCP. Firstly, the initial solution of the UCSP instance is generated by one construction heuristic algorithm, the first fit algorithm. Secondly, we defined one union move selector to control the moves and provide diverse solutions from initial solutions, consisting of two changing move selectors. Thirdly, Tabu search and simulated annealing (SA) are combined to filter out unacceptable moves in a parallel mode. Then, the acceptable moves are selected by one adaptive decision algorithm, which is used as the next step to construct the final solving path. Benefits from the excellent design of the union move selector, parallel tabu search and SA, and adaptive decision algorithm, the proposed method could effectively solve UCSP since it fully uses Tabu and SA. We designed and tested the proposed algorithm in one real-world (PKNU-UCSP) and ten random UCSP instances. The experimental results confirmed its effectiveness. Besides, the in-depth analysis confirmed each component's effectiveness for solving UCSP.

  • In solving the Job Shop Scheduling Problem, the best solution rarely is completely random; it follows one or more rules (heuristics). The Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Simulated Annealing, and Tabu search, which belong to the Evolutionary Computations Algorithms (ECs), are not efficient enough in solving this problem as they neglect all conventional heuristics and hence they need to be hybridized with different heuristics. In this paper a new algorithm titled "Shaking Optimization Algorithm" is proposed that follows the common methodology of the Evolutionary Computations while utilizing different heuristics during the evolution process of the solution. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the GA, PSO, SA, and TS algorithms, while being a good competitor to some other hybridized techniques in solving a selected number of benchmark Job Shop Scheduling problems.

  • This paper considers a scheduling problem in a two-machine flowshop with outsourcing strategy incorporated. The jobs can be either processed in the first machine or outsourced to outside subcontractors. This paper wants to determine which jobs to be processed in-house and which jobs to be outsourced. If any job is decided to be outsourced, then an additional outsourcing cost is charged The objective of this paper is to minimize the sum of scheduling cost and outsourcing cost under a budget constraint. At first this paper characterizes some solution properties, and then it derives solution procedure including DP (Dynamic Programming) and B&B (Branch-and-Bound) algorithms and a greedy-type heuristic. Finally the performance of the algorithms are evaluated with some numerical tests.

  • In this paper, we consider a scheduling problem of shipyard sub-assembly process. We introduce a skid conveyor system in a shipbuilding company. We develop a mathematical model and a genetic algorithm for shipyard sub-assembly process. The objective of the scheduling is to minimize the makespan which is the final completion time of all jobs. Numerical experiments show that the genetic algorithm performs efficiently.
