Monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a phenomenal two-dimensional material; most of its physical properties rival those of graphene because of their structural similarities. This intriguing material has thus spurred scientists and researchers to develop novel synthetic methods to attain scalability for enabling its practical utilization. When probing the growth behaviors and structural characteristics of h-BN, the use of appropriate characterization techniques is important. In this review, we detail the use of scanning and transmission electron microscopies to investigate the atomic configurations of monolayer and bilayer h-BN grown via chemical vapor deposition. These advanced microscopy techniques have been demonstrated to provide intimate insights to the atomic structures of h-BN, which can be interpreted directly or indirectly using known growth mechanisms and existing theoretical calculations. This review provides a collective understanding of the structural characteristics and defects of synthetic h-BN films and facilitates a better perspective toward the development of new and improved synthesis techniques.
Background: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been identified as promising compounds for consideration as novel antimicrobial agents. Objectives: This study analyzed the efficacy of cecropin B against Haemophilus parasuis isolates through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments. Results: Cecropin B exhibited broad inhibition activity against 15 standard Haemophilus parasuis (HPS) strains and 5 of the clinical isolates had minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) ranging from 2 to 16 ㎍/mL. Microelectrophoresis and hexadecane adsorption assays indicated that the more hydrophobic and the higher the isoelectric point (IEP) of the strain, the more sensitive it was to cecropin B. Through SEM, multiple blisters of various shapes and dents on the cell surface were observed. Protrusions and leakage were detected by AFM. Conclusions: Based on the results, cecropin B could inhibit HPS via a pore-forming mechanism by interacting with the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria. Moreover, as cecropin B concentration increased, the bacteria membrane was more seriously damaged. Thus, cecropin B could be developed as an effective anti-HPS agent for use in clinical applications.
Optical scanning holography (OSH) is a distinct digital holographic technique in that real-time holographic recording a three-dimensional (3-D) object can be acquired by using two-dimensional active optical heterodyne scanning. Applications of the technique so far have included optical scanning cryptography, optical scanning microscopy, 3-D pattern recognition, 3-D holographic TV, and 3-D optical remote sensing. This paper reviews some of the recent progress in OSH. Some possible further works are also discussed.

OBJECTIVES : In this study, microstructural components of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder were investigated using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). To clearly understand the elemental composition of the CRMA binder, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was employed on the ESEM samples. METHODS : CRMA binders were produced using open blade mixers at $177^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The binders were artificially aged through a series of accelerated aging processes. Sample preparation was done by making a mold shape on the glass slide. Thereafter, the morphology of the CRMA binder was observed using the ESEM coupled with the EDX. RESULTS : The images captured from the ESEM indicate that the unaged CRMA binder appears to have a single-phase continuous nonuniform structure after the addition of crumb rubber particles, whereas the artificially aged CRMA binder was observed to have two different phases. ESEM coupled with EDX shows detailed internal structure of the modified binders compared to other technologies (i.e., optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and conventional scanning electron microscope). CONCLUSIONS : The captured images resemble the internal structures such as the viscous properties of the unaged CRMA binder and the interaction between the rubber particles and the base binder at aged condition. ESEM is a powerful instrument and with the introduction of EDX, it provided more details of the network microstructure of the asphalt binder. ESEM coupled with EDX is recommended for use in future investigation of microstructure of asphalt binders.
It has been reported that the surface properties of the plasma treated material were changed while maintaining its bulk properties. In this study, surface modification of nylon fiber by plasma treatment was tried to attain high water-repellency Nylon fiber was treated with RF plasma under a vacuum system using various parameters such as gas specious, processing time and processing power. Morphological changes by low pressure plasma treatment were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the mechanical and inherent properties were analyzed by tensile strength, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The high water-repellency property of nylon fiber was evaluated by a water-drop standard test under various conditions in terms of aging effect. The results showed that the water-repellency of plasma-surface-treated nylon fiber was greatly improved compared to untreated nylon fiber.

Si nanocrystal (Si NC) memory device has several advantages such as better retention, lower operating voltage, reduced punch-through and consequently a smaller cell area, suppressed leakage current. However, the physical and electrical reasons for this behavior are not completely understood but could be related to interface states of Si NCs. In order to find out this effect, we characterized electrical properties of Si NCs embedded in a SiO$_{2}$ layer by scanning probe microscopy (SPM). The Si NCs were generated by the laser ablation method with compressed Si powder and followed by a sharpening oxidation. In this step Si NCs are capped with a thin oxide layer with the thickness of 1$\~$2 nm for isolation and the size control. The size of 51 NCs is in the range of 10$\~$50 m and the density around 10$^{11}$/cm$^{2}$ It also affects the interface states of Si NCs, resulting in the change of electrical properties. Using a conducting tip, the charge was injected directly into each Si NC, and the image contrast change and dC/dV curve shift due to the trapped charges were monitored. The results were compared with C-V characteristics of the conventional MOS capacitor structure.

ZnS-polymer gel films were prepared with incorporating mesoporous ZnS synthesized by surfactant-assisted templating process and poly (vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (P(VDF-HFP)) in order to observe the variation of ionic conductivities according to the various weight ratios between ZnS and P(VDF-HFP). Ionic conductivities for each gel electrolyte were measured with increasing temperature. As a result, ionic conductivities increased with increasing the amount of ZnS and temperature. In particular, the films with 20 and 25 wt% ZnS were found that they possessed the high ionic conductivity of approximately $10^{-4}Scm^{-1}$ at room temperature. However, above 20 wt% of ZnS, the enhancement of ionic conductivity was not observed. For the characterization of ZnS and the gel electrolyte, XRD (x-ray diffractometer), DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), FT-IR (fourier transform-infrared spectrometer), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy) were employed. Ionic conductivities were measured by a.c. impedance method.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the penetration pattern of dentin adhesives according to the orientation of dentinal tubules with confocal laser scanning microscopy. Specimens having perpendicular. parallel and oblique surface to dentinal tubules were fabricated. The primer of dentin adhesives (ALL $BOND^{\circledR}{\;}2,{\;}CLEARFIL^{TM}$ SE BOND and PQ1) was mixed with fluorescent material. rhodamine B isothio-cyanate (Aldrich Cherm. CO., Milw., USA), It was applied to the specimens according to the instructions of manufactures. The specimens were covered with composite resin (Estelite, shade A2) and then cut to a thickness of 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ with low speed saw (Isomet^{TM}, Buehler. USA). The adhesive pattern of dentin adhesives were observed by fluorescence image using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The results were as follows. 1. For the groups with tubules perpendicular to bonded surface. funnel shape of resin tag was observed in all specimen. However. resin tags were more prominent in phosphoric acid etching system (ALL $BOND^{\circledR}$ 2 and PQ1) than self etching system ($CLEARFIL^{TM}$ SE BOND). 2. For the groups with tubules parallel to bonded surface. rhodamine-labeled primer penetrated into peritubular dentin parallel to the orientation of dentinal tubules. But rhodamine-labeled primer of PQ1 diffused more radially into surrounding intertubular dentin than other dentin adhesive systems. 3. For the groups with tubules oblique to bonded surface. resin tags appeared irregular and discontinuous. But they penetrated deeper into dentinal tubules than other groups.
