  • The seismic behavior of a rectangular liquid container with high damping laminated rubber bearing is investigated through the scaled model tests. The results are compared with those for non-isolated model, and those by analytical methods. It is shown that the optimum dynamic properties of isolation system can reduce the acceleration response in the superstructure significantly and prevent the amplification of sloshing height.

  • Experimental wind tunnel tests have been attempted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of floating offshore structure using some types of scaled mldels. The static behaviors of lift, drag forces and pitching moment of its models are measured to exammine the relationship between wind loads and incidence angle, wind velocity, shape of models. The effect of solid ground has been obtained also.

  • This paper describes the guideline of design and tuning of practical Micro 5KVA machine's digital AVR/PSS control parameters by using the computer models and testing on-line AVR step test of laboratory simulator under the no-load or load conditions. The suggested procedures can be also applied to the large scaled machine's AVR/PSS control parameter tuning in KEPCO system.

The seismic response characteristics of a three-bay-straw-roof house which is a typical from of residence in ancient period is quantitatively estimated. Energy dissipation response of brick masonry under cyclic compressive loading

  • Scaled brick masonry panels were tested under cyclic unialxial compression loading to evaluate its deformation characteristics. An envelope stress - strain curves, a common point curves and stability point curves were obtained for various cyclic test conditions. Loops of the stress-strain hysteresis were used to determine the energy dissipation for each cycle. Empirical expressions were proposed for the relations between energy dissipation and envelope and residual strains. These relations indicated that the decay of masonry strength starts at about two-third of peak stress.

  • Recent earthquakes in California and Japan caused extensive damage to highway bridge structures. It is also thought that during probable earthquakes bridge structures in Korea could be failed due to the structural deficiencies, which were nonseismically designed and constructed before 1992. In these regards, innovative strengthening methods have been developed to repair reinforced concrete bridge columns, especially by glassfiber sheet bonding methods which are widely used today. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the seismic behavior of RC bridge columns retrofitted with composite straps and to propose pertinent guidelines of repair and rehabilitation method for earthquake resistant design procedure of RC bridges which are located in low or moderate seismicity regions. Six scaled-down concrete test specimens were made with test variables such as lap splice ratio, axial force ratio, confinement ratio, composite straps in the plastic hinge region. Pertinent design guidelines could be developed for the earthquake resistant design of RC bridge piers retrofitted with glassfibers in low or moderate seismic region.

  • Lightning current distribution in a building directly hit was studied by using a scaled steel frame structure model. As the test current source, impulse current with the rise time of 10 ${\mu}s$ and sinusoidal current with the frequency of 30 kHz were used to confirm the validity of test results. The current distributions at both horizontal and vertical pillars were measured by using CT. From the test results, the reduction effect for the conductive EMI was verified and a design method reducing the conductive EMI was proposed.

  • LB-DECK is used for both of permanent formwork and structural component with cast-in place concrete of concrete bridge decks. Current Korean design code recommends that concrete bridge deck with precast concrete panels have to be designed only using conventional flexural design method and does not allow the empirical design method which is based on punching shear strength of bridge deck. This paper present experimental test results of punching shear strength of concrete bridge decks with LB-DECKs. Six full-scaled concrete bridge decks, which are designed with the empirical design method, are fabricated with variation of girder spacings. Test results are presented in the paper and compared with the code predictions of ACI 318, CEB-FIP MC90. Based on the test results, it is proposed that LB-DECK is suitable to apply the empirical design method for concrete bridge decks.

  • This research is to investigate the effect of base roughness of footing on characteristics of load-settlement curve. Parametric experiments of small scaled model test were performed with changing the properties of base roughness of model footing; Gluing the vinyl, aluminum, sand paper, sand beneath the model footing surface. The width of model footing and relative density of soil foundation were also changed to investigate their effects on settlement characteristics of footing. The ultimate bearing capacity as well as the initial slope of load-settlement curve obtained from test results were compared with those from limit equilibrium methods proposed by Terzaghi, Hansen and Meyerhof. From test results, it was confirmed that the base roughness affected the failure mechanisms of showing different shapes of slip lines formed beneath the footing.

  • It is very difficult to accomplish load tests of piles with large diameter constructed on the offshore area, because of requirement for large scaled loading equipment and bad testing conditions. Therefore, so far in many cases pile driving dynamic formulas have applied to quality control, and recently dynamic load test method is widely used for confirming bearing capacities of such piles. However, in cases of piles with very large diameter about 2,500mm, it is nearly impossible for regular type load test methods of piles such as static and dynamic to apply owing to very large design load. This is case studies of load tests such as modified static and dynamic load tests of piles and point load tests of rock samples for estimating rational allowable bearing capacity of very large diameter piles constructed on the marine area.
