Soil-rock interface, mainly founded in Granite region of Korea, is known as one of the important factor of the slope failure at the rainfall due to smaller shear strength than soil itself. However, research of the effect on slope stability by soil-rock interfaces is insufficient. Therefore, a series of direct shear tests were performed in order to investigate the effect of soil-rock interface on slope stability. The method of tests is to get sand itself and sand-artificial rock interface shear strength from different grain size of sands and artificial rock samples. The results of tests show that the friction angle of interface depends primarily on particle size and surface roughness. Interface friction angle ratio ${\mu}(={\delta}/{\Phi})$ is in the range of 0.75 ~ 0.96, this results indicate that interface friction angle is smaller than sand itself.

Sand deposit with shell units is exposed in Hasa-ri, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeonnam province. We investigated the characteristics of sand sediment topography in the Yeonggwang coastal area to collect evidence of the paleo-environmental change. We performed analysis on particle characteristics, chemical composition, and the age of deposition of sediments. The deposit comprise moderately well sorted medium and fine sand ($1.00{\sim}2.19{\varphi}$). Various sedimentary structures can be observed. Geochemical characteristics change by depth and the degree of variation with depth is small. The results obtained from OSL dating show that sand layers below shell units are deposited 0.32-0.43 ka. As the elevation of the shell unit far mean high water levels or highest high water level, the extensive shell layers could only have been deposited during storm surge conditions. Aeolian processes are discounted due to the size of clasts and the location at which they occur. Results of age dating of the surrounding deposits indicate shell deposits formed after around 300 years age. There is a distinct difference between sedimentary layers including dark brown-black layer. The sedimentary characters such as particle size and geochemistry show difference with depth. It is presumed that depositional environmental in Hasa-ri has changed several times before. This study is expected to contribute to finding an evidence about occurrence of storm surges.
The sand drift movement at Young Il Bay area was tentatively investigated using Co-60 glass sand. Grain size and specific gravity of the glass sand which has originally contained natural cobalt, Co-59, was made similar to those of the real coastal sand, and was irradiated in a beam port of the reactor Triga Mark II to make the glass sand radioactive by the reaction of 59Co(n, r)60Co. The radioactive cobalt glass sand was deposited on the preselected point of sea bed, and, after a couple of weeks, the drift of sand was traced by means of specially designed water-proof G-M detector. Net counts at each point were plotted to figure out equicount lines and consequently such aspects as the direction of sand drift movement, the scope of distribution and the relative drift velocity etc. were indicated.

The heat transfer of the mold in the casting process has been calculated by considering the mold as a uniform isotropic material. Since the mold was not a uniform isotropic material, however, the calculation was performed with approximate values, and in particular, estimated values were used when considering compaction and the amount of added binder. In this study, a calculation algorithm of the thermal properties of the sand mold was developed. An algorithm for calculating the thermal conductivity and specific heat based on a thermal resistance model in the case of mono-dispersed sand grains was also developed and applied to sand molds with various size distributions. The thermal properties of sand were calculated for artificial sand, and relatively close values compared to the experimental values were obtained.
The paper investigates the effect of two parameters - sand content (SC) and grain migration during shearing - on the mechanical properties of gravel-sand mixtures. Consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial tests were carried out on eight series of mixtures containing gravel (1<d<16 mm) and sand (0.1<d<1 mm). The prepared mixtures have sand contents of 0, 10, 15, 20, 40, 54, 94 and 100%, and a relative density of 60%. The transition sand content (TSC) is experimentally defined and marks the transition from gravel-driven to sand-driven behavior. For SC<TSC, the dry density of the mixture increases with SC. This induces an increase in undrained peak strength and dilative trend. The slope and position of the critical state line (CSL) are also deeply dependent on SC. At SC=TSC, the mixtures exhibit the largest dry density and yield the highest undrained peak strength and the largest dilative trend. During shearing, large internal migration of grains was observed at the TSC, causing heterogeneity in the sample. Analysis of the CSL deduced from the final points of the triaxial tests shows that, at the TSC, failure appears to correspond to the behavior of the coarsest fraction of the soil. This fraction is located in the upper part of the sample, where the sand particles had been eliminated by suffusion. On the other hand, in the more stable materials, the CSL is consistent with the bulk grain size distribution of the soil.
Rigid-soft particle mixtures, which consist of sand and rubber, are investigated for the understanding of the stress-deformation and elastic moduli. Specimens are prepared with various size ratio sr between sand and rubber particles, and different volumetric sand fraction sf. Small strain shear waves are measured under $K_o$-loading condition incorporated with the stress-deformation test by using oedometer cell with bender elements. The stress-deformation and small strain shear wave characteristics of rigid-soft particle mixtures show the transition from a rigid particle behavior regime to a soft particle behavior regime under fixed size ratio. A sudden rise of $\Lambda$ factor and the maximum value of the $\zeta$ exponent in $G_{max}=\;{\Lambda}({\sigma}'_{o}/kPa)^{\zeta}$ are observed at $sf\;{\approx}\;0.4{\sim}0.6$ regardless of the size ratio sf. Transition mixture shows high sensitivity to confining stress. The volume fraction for the minimum porosity may depend on the applied stress level in the rigid-soft particle mixtures because the soft rubber particles easily distort under load. In this experimental study, the size ratio and volumetric sand fraction are the important factors which determine the behavior of rigid and soft particle mixtures.

For the purpose of developing a PE fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composite having high tensile strain capacity more than 2% under the condition of containing aggregates with large particle size, this study investigated the tensile behavior of composites according to the particle size and distribution of aggregates in the composite. Compared with the mixture containing silica sand of which particle size is less than 0.6 mm, mixtures containing river sand and/or gravel with the maximum particle size of 2.36 mm, 4.75 mm, 5.6 mm, 6.7 mm were considered in the experimental design. The particle size distributions of aggregates were adjusted for the optimized distribution curves obtained from modified A&A model by blending different sizes of aggregates. All the mixtures presented clear strain-hardening behavior in the direct tensile tests. The mixtures with the blended aggregates to meet the optimum curves of aggregate size distributions showed higher tensile strain capacity than the mixture with silica sand. It was also found that the tensile strain capacity was improved as the maximum size of aggregate increased which resulted in wider particle size distribution. The mixtures with the maximum size of 5.6 mm and 6.7 mm presented very high tensile strain capacities of 4.83% and 5.89%, respectively. This study demonstrated that it was possible to use coarse aggregates in manufacturing highly ductile fiber-reinforced cementitous composite by adjusting the particle size distribution.
This experiment did comparison and analysis that protected soil particle migration have affect on function of the filter and therefore fall function of the filter. Results obtained are as follows: 1.High water head makes to be much movement of fine sand and out flow of particle to the outside. The filter have large opening size that reached stability an early stage, but much fine sand is washed away. If the velocity turns fast and becomes small, blocking phenomenon is remarkable nearby the filter-sand interface. 2. The movement of fine sand that effect on function of filter depend on opening size and change of water head. Under the same condition, USCE filter and USSPL filter is reached earlier than other filter that is stability of stage, because it's opening size is large. 3. Residual quantity of fine sand migration was largly come out in order of USSPL, USCE, USBR, Newton & Hurley, Bertram filter. 4. The time required to stability of flow was taken less in order of Bertram, Newton & Hurley, USBR, USSPL, USCE filter and coefficient of permeability was highly come out in order of USBR, Bertram, Newton & Hurley, USSPL, USCE filter. 5. It proved that USCE and USSPL is suitable for the filter criteria.
Various sizes of gravels are included in the most field soils that are utilized for civil constructions. Especially, the small amounts of gravel are often included in selected soils for backfill materials, earth dams, and subbase ground. In such cases, the small amounts of mixed gravel and its shape may influence the determination of dry density of soils, which results in an inaccurate degree of compaction for soils in the field. In this study, a dry density of sand with various gravel contents (0, 10, 17, 23, 29 and 33%) and three different sizes (2.0-2.36, 3.35-4.75, 5.6-10.0 mm) was experimentally investigated for compacted or loosely packed conditions. The loosely packed sand with gravels was simulated by pouring sand into compaction mould and its density was determined. When a 33% of gravel content was mixed with sand, its dry density increased up to 15-20% for compacted specimen and 20-23% for loosely packed specimen. When a gravel content and size were the same, a dry density of compacted specimen was $0.1-0.16g/cm^3$ higher than that of loosely packed specimen. Even though the same gravel content was used, a dry density of sand with big gravels was $0.04-0.08g/cm^3$ higher than that of sand with small gravels for compacted specimen and $0.03-0.05g/cm^3$ for loosely packed specimen.

A series of column test with a silty marine soil mixed with Jumunjin Standard Sand were performed to investigate the characteristics of settling and consolidation of non-plastic dredged soils. Column tests were carried out by using the separable column to measure the grain size distribution of consolidated layer. Column tests were performed with changing the mixing ratio of Jumunjin Standard Sand to the silty marine soil, initial water content of slurry and initial height of slurry. Height of interface of slurry was monitored during tests and grain size distribution tests were carried out after finishing tests. Influencing factors on the particle segregation, eventually to the characteristics of settling and consolidation of non-plastic soil, were analyzed on the thesis of test results. As results of column tests, the mixing ratio of sand to the silty marine soil and the initial water content of slurry were known to affect the characteristics of settling and consolidation resulted in significant particle segregation of slurry. Initial height of slurry was found not to affect seriously to particle segregation.
