  • Here, we demonstrated simple nucleic acid, RNA, concentration method using polymer micro chip containing glass bead ($100\;{\mu}m$). Polymer micro chip was fabricated by PDMS ($1.5\;cm\;{\times}\;1.5\;cm$, $100\;{\mu}m$ in the height) including pillar structure ($160\;{\mu}m\;(I)\;{\times}\;80\;{\mu}m\;(w)\;{\times}\;100\;{\mu}m\;(h)$, gap size $50\;{\mu}m$) for blocking micro bead. RNA could be adsorbed on micro glass bead at low pH by hydrogen bonding whereas RNA was released at high pH by electrostatic force between silica surface and RNA. Amount of glass beads and flow rate were optimized in aspects of adsorption and desorption of RNA. Adsorption and desorption rate was measured with real time PCR. This concentrated RNA was applied to amplification micro chip in which NASBA (Nucleic Acid Sequence Based Amplification) was performed. As a result, E.coli O157 : H7 in the concentration of 10 c.f.u./10 mL was successfully detected by these serial processes (concentration and amplification) with polymer micro chips. It implies this simple concentration method using polymer micro chip can be directly applied to ultra sensitive method to measure viable bacteria and virus in clinical samples as well as environmental samples.

  • In this study, in order to improve the durability of the cement composite printed with the ME type 3D printer, PDMS, sodium silicate, and a surface hardener were employed. Post-treatment was performed on 3D-printed cement composite by coating after immersion, and the degree of improvement in durability was evaluated. As a result, in all evaluations, the durability performances of the post-processed specimens were improved compared to those of the plain specimens. Water absorption resistance, chloride penetration resistance, and carbonation resistance of the PDMS treated specimens were improved by 36.3 %, 77.1 %, and 50.4 % when compared to plain specimens. Freeze-thaw resistance of the specimens treated with sodium silicate was found to be the most excellent, with an average enhancement of 47.5% compared to plain specimens. It was found that PDMS was the most efficient post-treatment materials for 3D-printed cement composite. However, as suggested in this study, the post-treatment method by coating after immersion may not be applicable to cement composite structures printed with a 3D printer in field. Therefore, a follow-up study needs to be preformed on the durability enhancing materials suitable for 3D printing.

  • This study investigated the variation of flow rates in microchannels that consisted of polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) and glass using various external voltages. Three different microchannel widths and two different depths. PDMS and negative photoresist (SU-8) were used to make the microchannels by the soft lithographic method. For each depth of microchannel ($50{\mu}m$ and $100{\mu}m$), three different widths ($100{\mu}m$, $200{\mu}m$ and $300{\mu}m$) were made. In each case, several different external voltages were applied (0.3 kV, 0.35 kV, 0.4 kV and 0.45 kV) to examine the flow rates. Our results indicated that flow rate increased with an increase of the external voltage at the same microchannel width. This was because the electrical field was increased as the external voltage increased. For the same external voltage, the flow rate increased as the microchannel's width increased. These results showed that the resistance in the microchannel decreased as the microchannel's width increased. Also, to investigate the effect of microchannel's depth and width, the cross-sectional area of the microchannel was increased to the double in area. As a result, the effect of the microchannel's depth was higher at a low external voltage, and the effect of the microchannel's width was higher at a high external voltage.

  • In this study, a polymer/graphene hybrid composite was prepared by a simple roll-method and a simple sensor was produced by a convenient surface engineering procedure. The sensor performance was examined and the effect of graphene content on the sensing behavior was monitored. A polymer (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) paste containing graphene powder was prepared by a three-roll apparatus and polymer/graphene hybrid composite was produced by a two-roll technique. The sensing medium, cyclodextrin (CD) was introduced by a convenient bio-conjugation method. The efficacy of surface modification was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the ohmic relation was observed on composite surfaces. An analyte (e.g., methyl paraben, MePRB) at a 10 nM concnetration could be detected. When the graphene loading was low, the sensor performance was relatively poor. This was attributed to the absence of graphene alignments, which were observed for the composites having a high graphene loading. This indicates that the sensor performance was influenced by physical alignments of the filler. This article can provide important information for future research on developing sensing devices.

  • We propose a hyperbolic metastructure based on a nanopatterned metal (Ag)-dielectric (PDMS) multilayer and report on its performance in an infrared (IR) cut-off filter for imaging devices. By optimizing the size of the square-shaped Ag nanopattern and the thickness of PDMS surrounding the Ag nanopattern, the proposed IR cut-off filter blocks 99% of light in the 0.70-1.01 ㎛ wavelength band while maintaining a high transmittance of over 94% in the visible region. Here, the cut-off wavelength band starts at a region above the epsilon-near-zero wavelength of the hyperbolic metastructure and ends at the point where plasmonic absorption appears strongly. It is observed that transmittance in the wavelength region longer than the IR cut-off band increases again due to plasmonic coupling among horizontally adjacent Ag nanopatterns. This metastructure can improve the performance of IR-blocking filters as well as allow it to be manufactured ultra-thin, which is applicable to various planar optical elements and integrated optical components.

  • In this study, Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with GC/FID was studied as a possible alternative to liquid-liquid extraction for the analysis of chlorinated solvents (PCE and TCE) and these by-products (cis-DCE, VC, and Ethylene). Experimental parameters affecting the SPME process (such as kind of fibers, adsorption time, desorption time, volume ratio of sample to headspace, salt addition, and magnetic stirring) were optimized. Experimental parameters such as CAR/PDMS, adsorption time of 20 min, desorption time of 5 min at $250^{\circ}C$, headspace volume of 50mL, sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration of 25% combined with magnetic stirring were selected in optimal experimental conditions for analysis of chlorinated solvents and these by-products. The general affinity of analytes to CAR/PDMS fiber was high in the order PCE>TCE>cis-DCE>VC>Ethylene. The linearity of $R^2$ for chlorinated solvents and these by-products was from 0.912 to 0.999 when analyte concentrations range from $10{\mu}g/L$ to $500{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The relative standard deviation (% RSD) were from 2.1% to 3.6% for concentration of $500{\mu}g/L$ (n=5), respectively. Finally, the limited of detection (LOD) observed in our study for chlorinated solvents and these by-products were from $0.5{\mu}g/L$ to $10{\mu}g/L$, respectively.

  • QDs-LEDs(quantum dot light emitting device) should contain well-organized arrays of QDs on an electron transport layer. Thin films of CdSe/ZnS core-shell QDs were successfully fabricated on $TiO_2$ substrates by using PDMS stamp and micro contact printing method. 2-Carboxyethylphosphonic acid(CAPO) and 1,6-hexanedithiol(HDT) were employed as molecular linkers in assembling CdSe/ZnS core-shell QDs with high-density and uniform array. The CAPO increased the binding strength between the QDs and the substrates, and the HDT induced the strong inter-particle attractions of assembled QDs. The assembling properties of QDs thin films were characterized by SEM, AFM, optical microscope and photoluminescence spectroscope(PL).

  • Polymer-coated film SAW sensors have been fabricated and their sensing properties for toxic chemicals have been extensively investigated. Four types of the toxic chemical compounds of hydrogen cyanide(AC), carbonyl dichloride(CG), pinacolyl methylfluorophosphonate(GD), 2,2'-dichlorodiethylthio ether(HD) were used as target gases. SAW sensors using five different kinds of polymers were used to detect toxic chemicals and their gas sensing characteristics were investigated. The polymers used as the sensing materials were polyisobutylene(PIB), polyepichlorohydrin(PECH), polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS), polybutadiene(PBD) and polyisoprene(PIP). The recommendable mixing ratio of PIB, PECH, PDMS, PBD and PIP to solvents were 1:30, 1:40, 1:10, 1:30 and 1:30, respectively. The sensing characteristics of the SAW sensors were measured by using E-5061A network analyzer.
