Molecular and Morphological Identification of a Muraenichthys gymnopterus (Ophichthidae: Anguilliformes) Leptocephalus Collected on Jeju island, Korea (한국 제주도에서 채집된 갯물뱀(뱀장어목: 바다뱀과) 엽상자어(Leptocephalus)의 형태 및 분자동정)

  • One leptocephalus (TL 59.9 mm) from the family Ophichthidae collected from Jeju Island, Korea, was identified using morphological and molecular methods. Our ophichthid leptocephalus was identified as belonging to the genus Muraenichthys based on morphological characters: 157 myomeres; the origin of the dorsal fin located a little in front of the anus; a distinct melanophore present on the opercle; and six gut swellings present. An analysis of 886 base pairs of the 12S rRNA mtDNA sequences showed that our leptocephalus must be Muraenichthys gymnopterus, because its sequences were concordant with those of an adult M. gymnopterus (d=0.001) and next to those of Muraenichthys sp. leptocephalus (d=0.034). Here, we are the first to describe the morphological characteristics of the M. gymnopterus leptocephalus.

  • Enedrias fangi, which was not yet recorded in Korean fishes fauna, is revealed in Korean coastal waters during the present research period. The external morphology of this species is compared with that of E. nebulosus ('bedorachi' in Korean name). Taking into consideration the morphological differences between two species and the Korean name of S. nebulosus, 'bedorachi', the authors propose 'heenbedorachi' meaning white gunnel as Korean name of this unrecorded species.

  • File sharing through P2P was decided as illegal according to Supreme Court of the U.S. and the Highest Court of Korea in 2005. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. et al. v. Grokster, LTD., et al. and Soribada v. Korea Association for Music Providers have the same ground for decision. P2P service company has vicarious liability for illegal file sharing of its customers. Balance between copyright protection and development of technology was considered in that decision. Programmer who will develop new program for free download and copyright holders who will exploit every measures to protect their right may compromise for their mutual benefits.

  • S-57 포맷으로 기술된 전자해도는 바다에 대한 디지털 지도로서 해안선, 수심, 항로표시 등과 같은 다양한 정보를 표현하고 있다. 이러한 전자해도는 주로 선박의 항해라는 특수한 목적으로만 사용되어 왔고, 전용의 시스템을 통해서만 이용할 수 있는 단점이 있다. 또한, S-57이라는 특수한 포맷으로 기술되어 있기 때문에 다양한 활용이 어렵다는 문제점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 전자해도를 손쉽게 이용하고 해양정보시스템의 기반 데이터로 활용하기 위해서는 범용의 표준 포맷으로 변환할 필요가 있다. 이러한 범용 표준으로 OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium)에서는 지리정보를 효과적으로 표현할 수 있는 XML(eXtensible Markup Language) 기반의 GML(Geography Markup Language) 표준을 발표하였다. 이에 본 논문에서는 선박의 항해에만 제한적으로 사용되던 전자해도를 손쉽고 다양한 활용이 가능하도록 GML로 변환하고 관리하는 방법을 제한한다. 즉, S-57 포맷의 전자해도를 GML 포맷으로 변환하고, 변환된 GML을 데이터베이스로 관리하는 시스템을 설계하고 구현하였다.

  • 일반적 의미의 소수력발전은 계곡이나 저낙차의 하천에서 시도되었으나, 한국의 지형과 강수패턴등은 소수력발전을 활성화하기에 어려운 점들이 있었다. 이에 최근에는 정수장, 하수처리장등과 같은 인공구조물에 소수력발전을 설치 운영하는 방향으로 가고 있으며, 특히 화력발전소 냉각공정에 사용되는 해수를 이용한 소수력발전이 크게 성공하였고 확대설치 되어가고 있다. 해안에 위치하는 LNG인수기지에서는 LNG의 기화에 해수를 열원으로 사용하며, 기화공정에서 열교환 후 바다에 배출된다. 이 때 기화해수와 공기와의 접촉으로 생성된 거품은 해양미생물과의 복합작용으로 쉽게 깨어지지 않고 바다로 떠내려가게 된다. 이러한 거품은 시각적 거부감으로 인하여 인근어민들의 불편함을 야기하고 있으며, 또한 배출해수와 일반해수와의 온도차로 인한 인근 어장이나 양식장의 어획고에 미칠 수 있는 부작용의 가능성에 대한 우려는 더욱 방류해수의 적절한 처리를 필요로 하고 있다. 이러한 방류해수의 거품생성을 해결하는 데 있어 근본적인 해결방법은 심층배수법인데, 심층배수 구조물에 발전수차를 추가 설치만 하면 수력발전이 가능하다. 방류해수의 거품관련 환경문제를 해결하면서 동시에 청정전력을 생산할 수 있는 해양소수력발전에 대하여 KOGAS에서는 LNG 인수기지에의 적용가능성을 분석하고 있으며, 방류해수의 낙차와 조수간만의 차를 이용하는 해양소수력발전을 LNG 인수기지에의 적용하는 것으로는 세계최초의 시도이다. 주변지형에 따른 입지여건을 분석하고, 해수계통분석, 소수력발전방법, 수차종류, 수차용량, 수차개수, pond의 크기등을 결정하고, 수리해석 및 경제성분석을 수행할 것이며 소수력발전의 타당성여부에 대한 가늠을 잡고자 한다.

A Study on the Users' Awareness of Waterfront in Japan - Focusing on Yokohama Minatomirai21 area - (일본 워터프런트 공간에 있어서 수변공간의식에 대한 연구 ~요코하마 미나토미라이21지구를 대상으로~)

  • Using a questionnaire, this study examined the users' consciousness through the human five senses on the waterside space in the district of Minato Mirai 21, Yokohama located in the east of Kanagawa prefecture, which is well known for its waterfront in Japan. Among the users, the results of the questionnaire showed 52.2% of male, and 29.6% accounted for people in their twenties as the dominant groups. Out of the nineteen questions regarding the consciousness on the waterside space, 'feel the sea breeze' accounted for 237(78.7%) while 'the sea is visible' accounted for 217(72.1%). Then, the contents of the nineteen questions were re-classified into such seven items as the human five senses(sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), activities, and the existence of facilities, discovering the consciousness of the users. The results demonstrated that touch(22.9%) and sight(20.8%) respectively were the most influential items.

  • Nuclear power utilities should establish a site-specific groundwater monitoring program for early detection of unplanned radioactive material's releases which can occur due to degradation of systems, structures and components of the nuclear power plants in order to keep the impact of the unplanned releases on the environment and the residents as low as reasonably achievable. For this end, groundwater flow on site should be evaluated based on characterization of the hydrogeology of a site of concern. This paper aims to provide data necessary for establishing groundwater monitoring program which is currently considered at Kori nuclear power plant 1 by characterizing groundwater flow system on the site based on the existing hydrogeological studies and related documents, and by modeling tritium transport. The results showed that the major groundwater flow direction was south-west and that most of groundwater entered a southern and eastern seas. Although the tritium plume also released into the sea, its rate was delayed by dewatering sump.

  • The use of the high seas are supported by the two pillars of customary principles --the freedom of navigation and the flag state control on its vessels, which are codified in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. There have been attempts to limit and retrain the two pillars as maritime regimes are newly created to address new maritime threats, while coastal stares' control over the seas expand. The pillars have been created over thousands years since human beings took to the sea and have served as a foundation to use the oceans peacefully and orderly. Therefore, any retreat or exception from these principles would undermine the fundamental framework for the use of the oceans and eventually these regimes would be subject to control of maritime powers. In conclusion, new maritime regimes such as the sanction measures on North Korea should be enforced within the framework of international law and comply with the fundamental principles such as innocent passage and the freedom of navigation at the high seas.

Distribution Characteristics of High Seas Watch and Warning in Korea (우리나라 풍랑특보의 분포 특성)

  • This paper analyzed the distribution characteristics of incidents of high seas watches and warnings using data from 2010 to 2014. High seas watches and warnings are critical to the vessels and marine operators of the region, etc. because they affect the ability to safely maneuver. High seas often appear at the southern and middle regions of the East Sea and the eastern region of the South Sea. This phenomenon is closely connected to an extratropical cyclone's development and migration, as well as monsoon intensity. They occur primarily in winter(December ~ January) and spring(March ~ April). The statistical analysis of monthly high seas watches and warnings in both inshore and offshore areas shows a strong positive correlation.

An Improved Asterias Amurensis Recognition Method Based on Morphological Characteristics Analysis Techniques (형태적 특징 분석 기법을 이용한 아무르불가사리의 개선된 인식 방법)

  • The population of highly prolific, predatory Asterias amurensis is growing sharply from year to year along the coastline of Korea, a nation surrounded by water on three sides. To make matters worse, the fact that Asterias amurensis devours living fish and shellfish has caused a heavy loss for fishermen involved in the aquaculture industry. What it all boils down to is the significance of technologies allowing one to recognize Asterias amurensis individuals using underwater images for the purpose of exterminating Asterias amurensis or identifying a change in the population of Asterias amurensis or the migration route of Asterias amurensis. An improved Asterias amurensis recognition method based on the morphological characteristics of Asterias amurensis was proposed in this paper. The proposed recognition method aimed at cases marked by the lack of extraction information on concaveness and convexity, which are the morphological characteristics of Asterias amurensis. Extracting all the characteristics of Asterias amurensis from images taken underwater is very difficult. In this respect, the proposed recognition is effective in terms of recognizing individuals in a diversity of Asterias amurensis images. As a result of the experiment, Our proposed method has achieved superior performance with 92.5% than other method.
