Effect of Shading on the Quality of Raw, Red and White Ginseng and the Contents of Some Minerals in Ginseng Roots (해가림 종류가 수삼, 홍삼 및 백삼의 품질과 무기물 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • The quality of raw, red and white ginseng and the contents of some minerals were examined using 6-year-old ginseng roots produced in different shades, thatch and polyethylene net (P..E.). The yield of first and second grade ginseng roots was higher in the thatch shade than in the P.E. shade. The smaller sizes of ginseng routs were probably due to loss of ginseng yield called by alternaria blight in the third and fourth years, and lower quality was dale to more rusty roots in the P.E. shading. For red ginseng. rates of heaven and earth grades were higher in the P.E. than thatch shade. producing red ginseng with less inside cavity Production of white ginseng was higher in the thatch shade than in the P.E. shade. showing a higher yield, better piece grade, lower inside crack and better quality index in the thatch. The contents of some minerals such as K, Ca, Mg and Mn of fine ginseng roots differed between the two shades, some of which had a significant correlation with the quality indices of white ginseng. Effect of Seeding Rate on Growth and Yield of Ginseng Plant in Direct-Sowing Culture (인삼 직파재배에서 파종밀도가 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • To know possibility of raw ginseng production for white- and red-ginseng by direct-sowing culture, seeds were directly sowed or seedlings were transplanted at soil condition of sandy loam in ginseng field. After cultivation, the characters of 5-year-old ginseng were investigated. Number of survived plants was increased with increase the seeding quantity in direct-sowing culture, the survived plants in direct-sowing culture was higher than that of transplanting one. Rate of the numbers of survived plants to numbers of seeds sowed in plots of 134 or 90 seeds sowed per tan, 180 x 90cm area, inspire of high number of survived plant was high compared to that of transplanting culture. Occurrence rate of rusty root of ginseng in direct-sowing culture was low significantly compared to that of transplanting culture. Root yield showed in the order of 134, 268, 90 seeds sowed, the values of yield in direct-sowing culture were high obviously compared to that of transplanting one. Individual root weight was increased with decrease the seeding quantity, however, the root weight in plot of 90 seeds sowed showed almost equal the weight in transplanting culture. The number of usable raw ginseng for white- and red-ginseng was increased with decrease of the seeding quantity; the numbers were higher than that of transplanting culture remarkably. We concluded that optimum seedling rate in direct-sowing culture of ginseng was 90 to 134 seeds per tan considering the yield per area and production rate of large root.

Selection of Preventers for Rusty Ginseng Roots from Natural Resources II (천연자원으로부터 인삼 적변방제물질의 선발 II)

  • We screened preventives (preventers) from natural resources to prevent the rust phenomenon in ginseng roots. We examined that how these influence on the rusty phenomenon and the growth of 2 years old ginsengs treated in the preventers. All treats which was compounding preventers & improvers were so excellent of the ginsengs growth. Especially, the growth of 2 years old ginsengs treated with bio-preventer of ICPE-C105 and ICPE-P107R were increased to 73%, 28% compared with nontreatment, respectively. Though rusty ginseng of rate was emerged 58% in control, preventers ICPE-C 105 and ICPE-P107 were emerged of each 16.7%, 20%. It was affirmed effective of preventer. On the other hands, amounts of ginsenoside treated with preventatives showed to be changed. The total ginsenoside was increased to 71% with treatment ICPE-C105R which is the highest among groups compared to control, and ICPE-P$\_$107/R was increased to 50%. To sum up with total results, it is biotic preventatives (ICPE-C$\_$105/R and ICPE-P$\_$107/R) which we created improve both a high yield of ginseng roots and the inhibition of the rusty phenomenon. phenomenon.

Factors and Cause of Rusty-Ginseng Occurrence (인삼 적변의 발생 요인과 원인)

  • In the preliminary experiment, the factors(soil moisture content, type of organic fertilizers, wound of ginseng, and concentration of rusty-root causing bacteria) inducing the rusty-root of ginseng were investigated. The Hue values were measured for the degree of rustiness affected by the factors. The rustiness was severe on the wounded-ginseng and on the ginseng inoculated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens (CG20126). The Hue values of the control, the non-wounded ginseng inoculated with CG20126, the wounded-ginseng, and the wounded-ginseng inoculated with CG20126 were 113.3, 108.1, 85.8, and 57.5, respectively. The Hue value of the horticulture bed-soil was 56.8 whereas the value of the paddy bed-soil counterpart was 64.7. The Hue values on the ginseng roots grown in the soil containing 10%, 20%, 50%, and 70% of moisture, were 96.2, 85.9, 78.0, and 75.7, respectively. The organic fertilizer increased the rustiness of ginseng and the range of Hue values was 35.2-27.8. The increased concentrations of A. tumefaciens CG20126 increased the rustiness of ginseng. The concentration of A. tumefaciens CG20126 at $10^{2},\;10^{4},\;10^{6},\;and\;10^{8}cells/m{\ell}$ resulted in the Hue values of 62.8, 63.3, 55.6, and 48.8, respectively.

Possible Factors Affecting Crack Development in Ginseng Roots (인삼뿌리의 균열발생에 관한 연구)

  • The development of cracking in ginseng roots was studied to elucidate the factors affecting it in the field. The cracking of 6-year-old ginseng roots harvested in late October callld be induced in 2 days after soaking in water or in watersatllrated soil. However, it callld be slowed down by approximately 10 days when the roots were kept at a low temperature(5$^{\circ}C$). Roots excavated in late May did not develop cracking tinder the conditions tested. There was no significant difference between rice-straw shade and P.E. net shade in the rate of cracked ginseng roots. Which varied with ginseng varieties in relation to shade material. The rate of cracked roots was about 40% in 6-year plants, but it was extremely high (55.6%) in rusty roots. Healing of the wound formed by cracking was generally low but varied between harvest years.

Growth Characteristics of Ginseng Seedlings as Affected by Mixed Nursery Soil under Polyethylene Film Covered Greenhouse (비닐하우스에서 상토의 조성에 따른 묘삼의 생장특성)

  • This study was conducted to find out the optimum composition of nursery soil for raising seedling of ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). Total 9 kinds of raw materials were used such as peat-moss, perlite, leaf mould, rice bran, gull's guano, castor-oil plant bark, palm bark, cow manure and chicken manure for optimum composition of nursery soil in ginseng. Occurrence of damping-off in ginseng was lowered about 50% in nursery soil type 1, 2 and 4 than in other types nursery soil in June, and occurrence rate of rusty root also lowest in nursery soil type 1. As the salinity of nursery soil increased, so did the occurrence of physiological disorder in ginseng seedling. The cause of salinity increasing in nursery soil has closely relation to $NO_3-N$, $P_2O_5$ and $Na^+$ content. Plant height, root length, diameter and weight were longer and heavier in nursery soil type 1 (mixing ratio of peat-moss, perlite and leaf mould was 50 : 20 : 30 based in volume) than in other types of nursery soil. So nursery soil type 1 was selected for raising seedling of ginseng. pH and electric conductivity (EC) of selected nursery soil type 1 was 5.55 and 0.13 dS/m. Contents of $NO_3-N$ and $P_2O_5$ were 21.0 and 40.0 mg/L, and $K^+$ 0.36, $Ca^{2+}$ 3.38, $Mg^{2+}$ 2.01 and $Na^+$ $0.09cmol^+/L$, respectively.

Agronomic Characteristics and Chemical Component of Hybrid between Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer and Panax quinquefolius L. (고려인삼과 미국삼 종간잡종의 형질 및 성분특성)

  • This study was carried out to ascertain the basic information on characteristics of Korean Ginseng(Panax ginseng) and American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius), F$_1$ hybrids. Interspecies hybrids between Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius were examined morphological characteristics, rusty root incidence, and contents of effective ingredients such as ginsenosides. The summarized results are as follows. In Panax ginseng, rusty root incidence tended to increase with age of ginseng, but there was no difference in the incidence among ginseng ages and cultivation years in Panax quinquefolius and F$_1$ hybrid. The interspecies hybrid of panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius flowered later than the Panax ginseng, but earlier than the Panax quinquefolius. As for the characteristics of ginseng root, Panax quinquefolius seedling was better than cv. Panax ginseng, as the former had longer and heavier seedling root than the latter. Ginsenosides of the hybrid F$_1$ showed intermediate value in amounts of Rb$_1$, Rb$_2$, Rc and Rd which were detected as in Panax gineng and Panax quinquefolius. The amount of Re of the hybrid was higher, but that of Rg$_1$ and Rg$_2$ in main and branch roots was lower compared with its parents. Rf was 0.14% and 0.20% in main and branch roots of Panax ginseng, respectively; however, no Rf was detected in Panax quinquefolius and in the hybrid F$_1$. This suggests there may be remarkable difference in Rf content among the ginseng species.
