  • Numerous developments have damaged agricultural landscapes and consequently agricultural areas have lost the amenity and their traditional culture. Despite the fact that damaged agricultural landscape is irreversible, precautionary policies for conserving agricultural landscapes in Korea have not been established properly. Meanwhile, social demands for well preserved rural landscapes have increased. This study, thus, aims to evaluates esthetic values of agricultural landscapes in order to prepare the basis for the formulation of properly informed policies. Bearing in mind the purpose of the study, firstly, present status of agricultural landscapes has been surveyed. Secondly, agricultural landscape values were estimated in friendliness, ruralness, and preference with 30 selected slides and 4 computer simulated pictures out of 305 pictures. The survey has been carried out with two student's groups of the landscape architecture majored (50 people) and the ordinary majored (68). The results implicated that agricultural landscape preferences has not been changed for 10 years to some extent. However, landscape majored respondents showed low preferences on the artificial creatures than the non-majored. Lastly, Recommendations for the agricultural landscape policy was made that the necessary developments should be considers form, colour, location, and size according to the natural landscape.

  • Recently, new concept and paradigm of 'Environmentally-Friendless' is taking a growing interest in environmental planning and design. This study is to develop the new approach of sustainable development, and to establish the indicators for environmentally-friendliness of "Tourism Farms" in rural areas. A questionnaire survey was conducted for deputy manager group and expert group. The environmentally-friendliness of tourism farms is composed of three categories, conservation of global environment(Low Impact), friendliness to surrounding nature(High Contact), and environmental health and amenities (Health '||'&'||' Amenity). Four indicators, such as saving of energy and water resource, reduction and reuse of garbage, natural purification of sewage disposal, and utilization of natural energy, were affecting the first category, i.e., conservation of global environment(Low Impact). And, friendliness to surrounding nature (High Contact) is affected by 3 indicators, such as contact to nature and diverse green areas, water intimate '||'&'||' contact areas, and natural ecology observation by biotope. Finally, the dimension of environmental health and amenity is affected by 3 indicators, such as nature affinity by farming experience, environmental-friendliness of soil '||'&'||' crops by organic farming, campaign and education programs of environmentally-friendliness. From the result of Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) for 10 indicators, environmentally-friendliness was recommended as 'Concentrate Here'. And, the content validity of 10 indicators for 3 categories was examined by factor analysis. The result showed as the same as hypothetical model, which proved the validity of hypothetical model.

  • The concept of sustainable development in rural area, which is focused on both preservation of nature and human's amenity, has been common paradigm. The purpose of this study is to suggest the development directions for the environmentally friendly rural house. The planning items for developing sustainable rural house were selected through literature survey, case study, and their adaptation evaluation. The establishment of principles and the evaluation of planning items were analyzed by a survey to experts. The results are as follows : 1) It is showed that sustainability evaluation of rural village is rated as above the moderate degree, but rural house is rated as 3.4(average score). Especially, there were lowly evaluated the utility, material, structure and inner environment in rural house. 2) It is revealed that 76.7% of planning items are located in both the upper left and upper right hand quadrant of the action grid, which is drawn by the importance-performance analysis(IPA). And any item is not found in the lower right hand quadrant(Possible Overkill). 3) Two basic principles and eight optional principles we identified by analysis of factor and regression. The rural zone is identified as major effective element for applying planning items into the rural house development. So it is desirable to apply the items differently by the rural zone type. 4) In view of sustainable development, it is desirable for rural village to have about 50 houses, and for rural house to have $155{\sim}180$ pyung(坪) as lot size, 30% as ratio of building, and 60% as building volume.

  • The aim of this study is to identify the spatial foundation units required to execute a rural village landscape plan. Though there have been various previous studies on spatial foundation units for rural space and landscape elements, they are limited in clarifying the landscape identity of a rural village unit in creating a feasible a rural village landscape plan. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the natural spatial features of a rural village and then establish a landscape identity for each space by exploring the landscape elements for each rural village unit set as the basic unit. Accordingly, the basic spatial unit was analyzed through a 1:5000 scale mapping by applying geomancy theory to the spatial landscape unit in a naturally generated rural village. The spatial limitations for a rural village landscape were set based on the analysis. Afterwards, a field study on the feasibility of whether or not setting a space as the basic unit for landscape could have a sense of identity as a single landscape unit for verification was processed, and the spatial limitations for the landscape were adjusted. Moreover, landscape elements were investigated by classifying landscape resources based on rural amenity resources which have been diversely researched in terms of the set spatial boundaries, and the sense of identity for each landscape foundation unit was looked into. While the numerous preceding studies focused on exploring the rural landscape value and findingout the sense of identity on landscape elements, it is high time for feasible and applicable studies in conducting region-specific landscape plans. In particular, similar outcomes from all landscape plans, even those with the same purpose established in various regions, is not a desirable outcome. Therefore, a basic framework is needed to discover the landscape identity generated by each plan in a rural area space. In this sense, this study is significant in that itcan be utilized to establish spatial identity of each region and landscape features of each rural village, and come up with realistic alternatives in landscape plans for each region by exploring the landscape identity in each specific space divided per watershed in a single zone.

  • As the interest in rural tourism has been increasing since the late 1990s, the research associated with rural tourism has increased, including research on the classification of rural tourism resources. The research classifying these resources has proved useful to many other studies. Although such studies have been conducted for a long time, they have expressed only experts' perspectives and been supported by statistics, without reflecting on users' opinions. Given this background, this study aims to classify rural tourism resources by focusing on the rural activities for tourists who use those tourism resources. To achieve this, each study participant proceeded to collect tourism resources by using a rural amenity resources database, and a card sorting test was conducted. Thirty-two people who had previously gone sightseeing in the rural areas were chosen as participants in the card sorting test. After the card sorting test was complete, the results were reviewed by experts. These results yielded six categories: doing nature activities, eating and cooking local dishes, putting up (overnight stays), going sightseeing/appreciating the landscape, enjoying leisure activities, and doing artistic activities. In the doing nature activities category, there were four subcategories: experiencing local resources, experiencing nature, experiencing tradition, and harvesting. This study was conducted to improve the satisfaction and understanding of the tourists who visit rural areas. Thus, the classification of rural tourism resources developed by this study will be widely used to establish the framework or contents of websites, applications, and so on, for promoting rural tourism resources and local resources.

  • This study aimed to plan a distinctive apple theme park, thereby specializing the nationwide brand of Cheongsong apple. Detailed objectives included: to establish the best possible environments in Korea to taste and appreciate apple and enjoy the Cheongsong Apple Festival; to identify and foster natural, cultural and social resources in the clean environment of Cheongsong; to clusterize research and production infrastructures for strengthening local competitiveness; and to develop a hub for the vitalization of the region where visitors and locals can mutually prosper. The study was multi-phased. The first stage included basic surveys such as local status and environment analysis and similar case studies, and the second stage was to review the appropriateness of theme selection, develop basic principles and strategies for development goals and review and incorporate project details. And the third stage aimed to develop a comprehensive plan from spatial plans and program plans and suggest plans to vitalize the operation of the park. The dimension of the subject site was $180,150m^2$, which was divided into four areas, in consideration of the land use and the environmental characteristics of the resources, for developing a land use scheme. The four areas were named: the apple-theme cultual area; the agricultural culture experience area; the plaza for exchange and harmony; and the plaza for natural observation. This study has significance in that it can serve as a case to develop farm theme parks, and as a case of appropriate development of programs to identify amenity resources with a focus on the existing resources and in consideration of local characteristics.
