  • The CANDU 6 reactor assembly consists of an array of 380 pressure tubes, which are installed horizontally in a large cylindrical vessel, the Calandria, containing the low pressure heavy water moderator. The pressure tube is located inside the calandria tube and the annulus between these tubes, which forms a closed loop with $CO_2$ gas recirculating, is called the Annulus Gas System(AGS). It is designed to give an alarm to the operator even for a small pressure tube leak by a very sensitive dew point meter so that he can take a preventive action for the pressure tube rupture incident. To judge whether the operator action time is enough or not in the design of Wolsong 2,3 & 4, the Leak Before Break(LBB) assessment is required for the analysis of the pressure tube failure accident. In order to provide the required data for the LBB assessment of Wolsong Units 2, 3, 4, a series of leak detection capability tests was performed by injecting controlled rates of heavy water vapour. The data of increased dew point and rates of rise were measured to determine the alarm set point for the dew point rate of rise of Wolsong Unit 2. It was found that the response of the dew point depends on the moisture injection rate, $CO_2$ gas flow rate and the leak location. The test showed that CANDU 6 AGS can detect the very small leaks less than few g/hr and dew point rate of rise alarm can be the most reliable alarm signal to warn the operator. Considering the present results, the first response time of dew point to the AGS $CO_2$ flow rate is approximated.

  • Evaluation on the sidesway seismic collapse capacity of the widely used low- and medium-height structures is meaningful. These structures with such type of collapse are recognized that behave as inelastic deteriorating single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. To incorporate the deteriorating effects, the hysteretic loop of the nonlinear SDOF structural model is represented by a tri-linear force-displacement relationship. The concept of collapse capacity spectra are adopted, where the incremental dynamic analysis is performed to check the collapse point and a normalized ground motion intensity measure corresponding to the collapse point is used to define the collapse capacity. With a large amount of earthquake ground motions, a systematic parameter study, i.e., the influences of various ground motion parameters (site condition, magnitude, distance to rupture, and near-fault effect) as well as various structural parameters (damping, ductility, degrading stiffness, pinching behavior, accumulated damage, unloading stiffness, and P-delta effect) on the structural collapse capacity has been performed. The analytical formulas for the collapse capacity spectra considering above influences have been presented so as to quickly predict the structural collapse capacities.

  • Steam generator tubes are degraded from wear, stress corrosion cracking, rupture and fatigue and so on. Therefore, the failure assessment of steam generator tube is very important for the integrity of energy plants. In the steam generator tubes, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe degradations such as erosion-corrosion damage and wear due to vibration. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis was performed by FE code ANSYS on steam generator tubes with wall thinning. Also, the four-point bending tests were performed on the wall thinned specimens, and then it was compared with the analysis results. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior from the experiment and FE analysis. Also, it was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the thinned area from FE analysis.

  • A quick-acting hydraulic fuse, which is mainly composed of a poppet, a seat, and a spring, must be designed to minimize the leaked oil volume during fuse operation on a line rupture. The optimal design parameters of a quick-acting hydraulic fuse were searched using the design of experiments method and the complex method. First, the $L_{50}(5^4)$ orthogonal array is used to find the robust minimum point among the 625 points of design variables. The search range can then be narrowed around the robust minimum point. Second, the $L_{25}(5^4)$ orthogonal array is used to obtain the variations of the design variables in the narrowed search range. The variations of design variables are used to set the structure of a polynomial equation representing the leakage oil volume of the quick-acting hydraulic fuse. The least squares method is then applied to obtain the coefficients of polynomial equation. Finally, the complex method is used to find the optimal design parameters where the objective function is described by the polynomial equation.

  • In this paper, we develop a real time monitoring system to detect third-party damage on natural gas pipeline. When the damage due to third-party incidents causes an immediate rupture, the developed on-line monitoring system can help reducing the sequences of event at once. Moreover, since many third-party incidents cause damage that does not lead to immediate rupture but can grow with time, the developed on-line monitoring system can execute a significant role in reducing many third-party damage incidents. Also, when the damage is given at a point on natural gas pipeline, the acoustic wave is propagated very fast about 421.3 m/s. Therefore, the data processing time should be very short in order to detect precisely the impact position. Generally, the pipeline is laid under ground or sea and the length is very long. So a wireless data communication method is recommendable and the sensing positions are limited by laid circumstance and setting cost of sensors. The calculation and monitoring software is developed by an algorithm using the propagation speed of acoustic wave and data base system based on wireless communication and DSP systems. The developed monitoring system is examined by field testing at Balan pilot plant, KOGAS being done in order to demonstrate its validity through reactive detection of third-party contact with pipelines. Furthermore, the development system was set at the practical pipelines such as an offshore pipeline between two islands Yul-Do and Youngjong-Do, and a land branch of Pyoungtaek, Korea and it has been operating in real time.

  • Water repellent preservative (WRP) treated and untreated, small-sized specimens prepared from semiwater resistant, water resistant, and tegofilm-overlaid plywood were exposed to outdoor weathering for one year. Exterior durability of specimens was evaluated on the basis of changes in dynamic modulus of elasticity, degree of delamination, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and glueline shear strength. Among untreated specimens, tegofilm-overlaid plywood showed the best outdoor durability, and durability between semiwater resistant and water resistant plywood was similar. Although WRP treatment increased the durability of all types of plywoods, the effect of treatment on the increase in durability for semi water resistant plywood was not distinct. Accordingly, it can be concluded that semi water resistant plywood, which is used for temporary construction such as concrete formwork in our country, can not be inadequate for exterior use, regardless of WRP treatment. The bending strength and glueline shear strength of untreated water resistant plywood measured after weathering for one year did not exceed the minimum value specified by Korean Standard (KS), thereby the outdoor use of water resistant plywood was not desirable without WRP treatment. Exterior durability between treated water resistant plywood and untreated tegofilm-overlaid plywood was very similar. This result suggests that if an exposed plywood surface is treated with WRP regularly water resistant plywood can be used for temporary construction. This suggestion, however, needs to be investigated. In summary, semiwater resistant plywood cannot be used for temporay construction regardless of WRP treatment. Water resistant plywood can be used only with WRP treatment. Comparing the cost of tegofilm-overlaid plywood to costs of water resistant plywood and WRP treatment, however, it can be concluded that use of tegofilm-overlaid plywood for temporay constrution is strongly suggested from the point of view of both outdoor durability and costs.

  • In this paper, the performance of pressure-resistance is validated by experiment on LPG re-fillable cylinder which has increased demands for spreading of camp culture. Propane has increased suppliable requirements as fuel because of easily vaporizing effect of low boiling point. However, propane can be occurring safety problems inevitably by high vapor pressure. So, the priority is that safe cylinder should furnish in order to be circulated as safe fuel. LPG re-fillable cylinder for high pressure is tried to furnish internationally, that is restricted by safe issues. For these reasons, the pressurization and rupture are performed by using pressurizing device that is operated by hydraulic system. Also, this paper will offer rupturable characteristics comparing with vapor pressure of propane. This paper is expected as basis research for developing re-fillable cylinder and using standard for supplying them.

  • Since the monolithic ceramic substrate was introduced for automotive catalytic converters, the durability of the substrate has been a continuing requirement to reduce the emission gas of vehicle. The substrate can occupy a volume as small as 82 $cm^3$ and as large as 8200 $cm^3$ to provide the required substrate for catalytic activity. The long-term durability varies with the size of the substrate from manufacture's point of view. Therefore This study presents that the response surface model using central composite design can explain size effect on the modulus of rupture in a cordierite ceramic monolithic substrate.

  • Background: The TightRope System is a device developed to provide extracapsular stabilization of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in canine stifles. I was then also employed for the extra-articular treatment of shoulder instability and for the intra-articular treatment of hip luxation in dogs and cats. Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of the Mini-TightRope (mTR) System for the intraarticular treatment of CCL rupture in small breed dogs. Methods: A cadaveric canine model was used to record the steps of the surgical procedure. Five client owned dogs weighing from 8 to 10 kg and from 2 to 12 years of age were enrolled in the prospective study in which the mTR device was implanted in the stifle joint to replace the ruptured CCL. The dogs were graded using the Bologna Healing Stifle Injury Index (BHSII) and radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) scores. Results: The outcomes obtained at the time of the surgery (T0) and for the following 12 months (T12) showed an improvement in the functional parameters (BHSII from a median of 74.3 [range, 58.1-82.4] at T0 to 95.6 [range, 94.1-99.3] at T12]). The OA did not change in 3 dogs and increased by only 1 point in 2 dogs. Conclusions: In this preliminary study, the mTR was a successful and repeatable intraarticular surgical procedure for all dogs. Additional studies related to the clinical application of the technique in medium-large dogs should be encouraged.

  • We had expierienced pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis(LAM) with bilateral chylothorax and chylous ascites. A twenty-one-year-old lass with chief complaint of abdominal pain was admitted through the emergency room. She received emergent pelvicoscopic surgery for the rupture of the right corpus luteum. We aspirated 1000ml of the uncoagulated blood. The bleeding point was cautherized electrically. LAM was diagnosed with tissue from the retroperitoneum. Chylous ascites and bilateral chylothorax were occurred despite of various treatments. On thoracotomy, bullous changed lung and lymphatic leakage from visceral and parietal pleura were observed. She died of respiratory insufficiency and general weakness after 6 months from admission.
