  • The development of eco-friendly alternative energy sources has become a global priority owing to the depletion of fossil fuels and an increase in environmental concerns. Hydrogen energy has emerged as a promising clean energy source, and hydrogen compressors play a crucial role in the storage and distribution of compressed hydrogen. However, harsh operating conditions lead to the rapid deterioration of conventional lubricants in hydrogen compressors, thereby necessitating the development of advanced lubrication technologies. This study introduces micrometer-sized silicone rubber powders as lubricant additives to enhance the lubrication performance of hydraulic oils in hydrogen compressors. We prepare silicone rubber powders by varying the ratio of the silicone rubber base to the curing agent and investigate their effects on interfacial properties, friction behavior, and wear characteristics. The findings reveal that the incorporation of silicone rubber powders positively influences the surface affinity, wettability, friction reduction, and wear resistance of the lubricants on the 304SS substrate. Moreover, we identify the optimal lubricant formulations, with a 15:1 ratio demonstrating the most effective friction reduction and a 5:1 ratio exhibiting the highest wear resistance. The controlled surface modification by the silicone rubber powder and the enhanced interfacial characteristics of the powder-containing lubricants synergistically contribute to the improved lubrication performance. These results indicate the potential of silicone rubber powder additives for the development of long-life lubrication solutions for hydrogen compressors and related applications, ultimately contributing to the advancement of sustainable energy technologies.

  • Cellulose production by Acetobacter pasteurianus was investigated in static culture using four bioreactors with silicone rubber membrane submerged in the medium. The shape of the membrane was flat sheet, flat sack, tube and cylindrical balloon. Production rate of cellulose as well as its yield on consumed glucose by the bacteria grown on the flat type membranes was approximately ten-fold greater than those on the non-flat ones in spite of the same membrane thickness. The membrane reactor using flat sacks of silicone rubber membrane as support of bacterial pellicle can supply greater ratio of surface to volume than a conventional liquid surface culture and is promising for industrial production of bacterial cellulose in large scale.

  • Environmental contamination creates shortages of potable water. In such situations, the leakage of water due to breakage or aging of rubber valve seats is a serious problem. Rubber is apt to break when it is placed between two materials that contact each other. One way to avoid water leakage due to rubber damage and breakdown is to replace the rubber with metal, which is currently taking place in water distribution systems. In tribology, a severe form of wear is characterized by local macroscopic material transfer or removal, or by problems with sliding protrusions when two solid surfaces experience relative sliding under load. One of the major problems when metal slides is the occurrence of galling. Experimentally, various conditions influence incipient galling, such as hardness, surface roughness, temperature, load, velocity, and the external environment. This study sought to verify the galling tendencies of metal according to its hardness, surface roughness, load, and sliding velocity, and determine the quantitative effect of each factor on the galling tendencies.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the effect of accumulated charges on hydrophobicity of room temperature vulcanized(RTV) silicone rubber, which could improve the contamination performance of porcelain insulators, with uv radiation time. Outdoor insulating material could be charged by the corona discharge on field intensified area of insulator and discharge between the water drops. In addition, we performed the accelerated uv radiation on samples and investigated the change of charging decay with time. In this results, it is found that silica-like structure on the surface of RTV silicone rubber was formed by uv treatments and this layer have the characteristic of retaining the charges on surface for a long time. These charges have effects on its hydrophobicity and so adversely effects on contamination performance. Based on our results, we discussed the other degradation mechanism with well known ones.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a wear growth prediction method on the surface of rubber pad of track assembly installed in high-speed battle tank i.e. the automatic model updating code interfacing with commercial finite element simulation software. Also, simple and resonable geometrical, material finite element model was established to be easily updated based on the empirical threshold value of contact pressure on the contact surface. From the iterative model update and analysis results, we discovered a weak point on rubber pad surface and suggested a new design concept for improving the wear performance of track assembly.

  • The outdoor polymeric insulating materials such as silicone rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) and epoxy are aged by various natural environment with the long-term performance in outdoor. In this paper, the effects of UV-ray on surface of silicone rubber were investigated by using the weather-Ometer. The accelerated aging stresses were simulated by UV radiation. high temperature and humidity as well as water spray. These the aging characteristics were examined through contact angle measurements, tracking resistance test, FT-IR and SEM/EDS analysis. the experimental results showed that tracking resistance decreases with increase in the UV-ray irradiation period. But the surface of silicone rubber kept hydrophobicity. It is found that the inorganic filler such as $Al(OH)_3$ improves tracking resistance and the $TiO_2$ is very effective in preventing degradation of silicone rubber surface from UV-ray.

  • Slab guideway, surface treatment, heat line installation, and joint connection for Automated Guideway Transit with rubber tire are researched. While the AGT with rubber tire is constructed in city, the precast slab guideway must be considered a reduction of the construction period and the noise under construction. which related with environment. To do that, a basic design and the structural analysis for the precast slab guideway with rubber tire are studied. The surface treatment and the heat line installation of that are also compared with currently used methods. Tining method is applied to the surface treatment adopted from the concrete pavement application currently in use. The connection method between the slab of bridge and precast guideway are suggested with a bolt type and a bond type. To minimize noise and vibration of the connection while the AGT is in driving, the slop connection method can be enhanced the serviceability.

  • The vehicle wiper blade(W/B) to lower the friction coefficient of the rubber surface after the surface treatment with chlorine were investigated. IR spectrum from W/B was used to determine the extent of chlorination of the rubber surface. Coefficient of friction is significantly reduced by the treatment with chlorine. In particular, the more sensitive influence on the initial chlorination. Rubber surface properties with respect to the longitudinal direction of the cutting plane were obtained by EPMA line analysis results. Penetration depth by EPMA chlorine concentration($20.0{\ell}$ of water for 35.0% hydrochloric acid(HCl) $300m{\ell}$ with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl) $400m{\ell}$), the chlorine treatment for 5 minutes was conducted to find that after 1.2 ${\mu}m$.

  • The effects of accelerated Ultraviolet (UV) radiation on High temperature vulcanized (HTV), Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber and two types of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) used for composite insulator were investigated by hydrophobicity class (HC), surface voltage decay after corona charging, SEM-ES, FTIR and XPS. The contact angle in two kinds of silicone rubber was scarcely change, but EPDM occurred to the loss of hydrophobicity followed by surface cracking and chalking. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM showed a different decay trend with UV treatment. EDS and XPS analysis indicated that the oxygen content increased with UV treatment time in all samples. For silicone rubber, the oxidized groups of inorganic silica-like structure increased with UV treatment time. The oxidized carbon of C=O, O=C-O in EPDM increased. These oxidized surface for each material had different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges were expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results was discussed.

  • Contamination of environment induces the shortage of drinkables. In this trend, the leakage of water that occurs by breakage or erosion of rubber valve seats is serious problem. Rubber is apt to cause breakage between two materials when they contact with each other. The possible way to avoid leakage of water by damage and breakdown of rubber is to replace that with metal. Because of this reason, nowadays, rubber is being substituted with metal as valve seat materials for water works. In tribology, a severe from of wear is characterized by local, macroscopic material transfer, removal, or formation of surface protrusions when two solid surfaces experience relative sliding under load. One of the major problems in sliding of metals is galling due to bad surface quality. Experimentally, there are various elements which influence on incipient galling, such as hardness, surface roughness, temperature, load, velocity and external environments. This paper is aimed at verifying the galling tendencies according to hardness, surface roughness, load and velocity and showing how much effect the factors have on the galling tendencies.
