  • Identification of blood cells and their physological functions in the cultured scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis collected from Abashiri Bay, Hokkaido, Japan were studied by electron microscopic structure and histological observations. The physiological function of each blood cell type was studied on the basis of its cytological structure, the lysosome in the blood cell and its phagocytosis. The blood cells were classified as Type I, Type II and Type III. The morphological characteristics of each blood cell type are as follows ; Type I : The cell is oval shaped and its cytoplasm contains comparatively low electron dense materials. The oval nucleus is sometimes ramified into two nuclei. Lumps of tubular smooth endoplasmic reticula and vacuoles are distributed near the nucleus. Type II : The cell appears long and oval shaped, and its cytoplasm contains high electron dense materials. The oval nucleus does not ramify, and large numbers of sac-like smooth endoplasmic reticula and free ribosomes are developed around the nucleus. No vacuoles exist in the cytoplasm Type 1II : The cell is round in shape and the electron density of the cytoplasm is the highest among the three types of cells because of large quantities of roughsurfaced endoplasmic reticula and no vacuoles. Particularly, the nucleus reveals a wheel-like shape owing to lumps of tuberous chromatin. The cells of Type I and II seem to have the role of carrying out phagocytosis on either foreign materials such as bacteria or endogenous old cells and the transport of nutritive materials. The type III cell, which has not been found in any bivalve species of non Pectinidae, may be said to have the function of production and the secretion of protein related to some humoral defense materials.

  • The radiographic diagnosis of typical Stafne bone cavity could be done easily with cyst-like round or oval radiolucency near the angle of the mandible, under mandibular canal with or without involving mandibular base, and no symptoms. However there are some atypical cases suggesting possible variations of this entity. We report a quite unusual case, where Stafne bone cavity was lastly included in the differential diagnosis list. Histological examination of salivary gland tissues confirmed the final diagnosis.

  • A case of primary non-clear-cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina is reported occurring in a 65-year-old woman without exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero. The adenocarcinoma did not appear to be associated with vaginal adenosis. It lacked clear cell component and interestingly composed of columnar epithelial cells of endocervical-type. Cytologically round to oval nuclei revealed one or more small nucleoli and fine granular chromatin pattern. Cytoplasm was plump, faintly basophilic and homogeneously stained. Histologically well differentiated columnar epithelial cells were arranged on trabecular pattern mainly, and also occasional glandular lumina and small solid sheets were found. Mitoses were hardly found.

  • Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma(SNUC) is a distinct, relatively rare neoplasm arising in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses composed of undifferentiated epithelial cells and clinically characterized by a fulminant course. We report a case of SNUC in a 56-year old man who have had bilateral neck masses since one month ago before coming to our hospital. The paranasal computed tomography showed soft mass density in the left maxillary sinus and the nasal cavity with bone destruction in the anterior medial and the inferior maxillary sinus wall. This mass was extruded into the left orbital wall. Biopsy of the nasal mass and fine needle aspiration(FNA) of the neck mass were done. FNA revealed medium-sized neoplastic cells forming clusters or individually dispersed. Nuclei were round to oval, slightly to moderately pleomorphic, and hyperchromatic. Chromatin was finely granular, but occasionally was coarsely granular. Nucleoli varied from large to inconspicuous and the cytoplasm was scanty.

  • Epithelioid sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue neoplasm with an uncertain histogenesis. We report the imprint cytologic features of epithelioid sarcoma in the left shoulder of a 29-year-old male patient. Imprint cytologic findings showed dissociated and loose aggregates of anaplastic epithelioid cells on the necrotic, bloody, and inflammatory background. Tumor cells were round to polygonal shaped. Tumor cells had vesicular nuclei with abundant cytoplasm. The nuclei were irregular in shape and often eccentrically located. Some tumor cells were oval to spindle shaped. Binucleated and multinucleated cells were found. Intracytoplasmic vacuoles were present. On immunohistochemical stain, the tumor cells were positive for epithelial membrane antigen, vimentin, and CD34.

  • Meningioma is the most common neoplasm of central nervous system which is hardly diagnosed by cytologic examination. However, preoperative cytologic diagnosis can be easily made in the case of extracranial meningioma, especially in head and neck lesion. We recently experienced a case of fine needle aspiration cytology of meningioma in sub-mandibular area of a 24 year-old male patient. The smear revealed high cellularity in the clean background. individual tumor cell of nests or syncytium had round or oval nuclei with fine chromatin and moderate amount of lightly stained cytoplasm with indistinct margin. Characteristic cellular whorls, intranuclear inclusions and scattered psammoma bodies made it easy to diagnose a meningioma.

  • Poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma is a variant of synovial sarcoma. We report a case of poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma imprinted after resection. The patient was a 47-year-old woman with a right shoulder pain for 6 months. The cytologic features showed malignant round to oval, monotonous tumor cells with high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio. Some tumor cells showed perivascular distribution and nuclear melding. Vague rosette-like structures were seen. On immunohistchemical stains, tumor cells were diffusely positive for CD99 and focally positive for epithelial membrane antigen. Ultrastructural examination showed desmosomes and microvilli.

  • An 8-year-old, female lionhead rabbit with clinical sign of hematuria and vaginal discharge with/without blood was submitted to a local animal hospital. On exploratory laparotomy, three round to oval masses were observed in both uterine horns. The lumen of uterus was severely obstructed and distorted because of massive neoplastic proliferation. Histopathologically, the uterine masses revealed papillary projections along with irregular glandular structures into the lumen. The neoplastic foci were composed of numerous irregular sized neoplastic glands originated from uterine glands. These neoplastic cells showed very strong invasive tendency to muscle layer, therefore emboli of neoplastic cells were located in lymphatics. According to immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells in uterine masses demonstrated strong positive signals for cytokeratin, but negative for vimentin. Based on the gross, histopathologic and immunohistochemical features, this case was diagnosed as uterine adenocarcinoma in lionhead rabbit.

  • The purpose of this design plan is a method for opening the church to regional society to contribute to make up the community within regional society and to achieve the desirable common society of christianity like following. 1)For opening churchs to regional society, the church has to make up exterior spaces sufficiently. 2)The main chapel has to planned with mutipurpose for fiexibility and various functions of contemporary church. 3)The whole facilities have to be organized with a kind of the complex or multifunctional building which can accommodate activities of education, recreation and culture, therefore, content with the community's requirements. 4)The architectural form of the church has to planned with human scale, considering harmonization with regional environment. Modern church architecture needs a centralized plan, a variety of shapes such as square, round oval and polygon rather then a rectangular which is able to bring about a closer reationship between the priest and the congregation in the church.

  • Extrathoracic metastases of thymomas are extremely rare, occurring in less than 2% of cases. We present a case of metastatic thymoma in the liver diagnosed by aspiration biopsy. A fine-needle aspirate from a hepatic mass of a 65-year old man who had a history of malignant thymoma locally invading pericardium was examined. Nests of epithelial cells with few scattered lymphocytes were present. The nuclei of the epithelial cells were round to oval and appeared relatively uniform and regular, with fine chromatin pattern. They had one or two, small but lather conspicuous nucleoli. Unlike previous reports on the findings of the aspiration cytology of thymomas, the characteristic biphasic pattern was not present in this case.
