  • Energy savings and environmental protection policies have been the general trend in the engine design. The friction power loss associated with the cam mechanism has become important. But it is difficult to measure the torque of rotating valvetrain in real engine environment because most of conventional torque meters are axial type. The objective of this paper is to develop new equipment which can be installed in a rotating camshaft. It uses strain gages to measure the elastic deformation of torque sensor which replaces the cam sprocket. It includes telemetry to transmit torque data via Bluetooth and induction power system to provide adequate power to rotating torque meter. The developed torque meter has good linearity and thermostability. It was installed in a real engine, and successfully measured the valvetrain torque.

  • Geothermal energy is used in various types, such as power generation, direct use, and geothermal heat pumps. Geothermal energy with high temperature have been used for power generation for more than a century. The purpose of the study is to investigate flow and electricity power characteristics of hydraulic turbine for power generation of geothermal heat pump type with closed-system. The differences between the four types of hydraulic turbine, are different from the blade shape, volume, angle and etc. In case of prototype(1), pressure at blade was reduced to 2.1 bar, the kinetic energy of blade increased by increasing flow velocity(4.1 m/s). The increase of flow velocity at the blade edge markedly appeared, to increase the kinetic energy of the rotating shaft. In case that gateway in hydraulic turbine was installed, operating torque and RPM(1,080) of the rotating shaft increased respectively. Although rotational speed of prototype(2) compared to prototype(1) was reduced, the power generation capacity was greater about 3.4 times to 97 W. The most power of 255W was generated from prototype (4).

  • This paper presents vibration analyses of hard disk drive (HDD) spindle systems based on the finite element method. The systems under investigation have a cantilevered shaft rotating on hydrodynamic bearings. In particular, the influence of stator's flexibility on major modes has been taken into account in dual ways lumped and distributed-parameter model approfches. Even the latter employs relatively macroscopic elements instead of extremely fine ones Popular in commercial codes. In order to prove the effectiveness of such formulated models, two types of HDD prototypes featuring different hub and stator structures are selected as examples. Compared to the first, the second type has a reinforced stator that would raise the natural frequency of the hub's translational (or sideway) mode. Both free and forced vibration characteristics are computed, and subsequently compared with the experimental data. It is our conclusion that Particularly the Proposed distributed model method is an efficient design tool for state-of-the-art HDD spindle systems.

  • Performance evaluation of a compressor is conducted to develop 500W class ultra-micro gas turbine (UMGT) for power generation. The performance evaluation is essential to check the performance of the components of UMGT, a radial turbine, a centrifugal compressor, an angular combustor and a shaft, which have been already designed in previous researches. The purpose of this study is to introduce the development process of the performance testing equipments of the UMGT and to present the results of compressor performance test. For the performance evaluation of the compressor, two test equipments are developed and the initial test equipment uses commercial static air bearings with long shaft. In the improved test equipment, static air bearing is improved to increase rotating speed and compressed nitrogen gas is used for utility gas of the static air bearing to supply compressed air in a stable and steady way. To increase rotating speed to 320,000 rpm, 80% speed of design speed, compressed air is provided to the turbine. The performance map of the compressor with the 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% speed of design point is presented. The results of the performance test of compressor show a good agreement with the results of 3D CFD.

  • Field balancing is required in any kind of phase information for the determination location balancing mass toward a rotor unbalance mass. Phase or phase angle is a measurement of the relationship of how one vibration signal which relates to another vibration signal and is commonly used to calculate the placement of balance weight. In this paper, A right guideline shows the photo optical speed sensor as the external keyphasor is a very useful when diagnosing machinery vibration problems on considering a phase lag comparing to the laser optical speed sensor. Some experimental results generate the interesting phase errors when appling to a wrong conditions. So, Usage of photo optical speed sensor which is used primarily to measure the shaft rotating speed serves as a reference for measuring vibration phase information has effect on the placement of phase angle how it was misunderstood. This paper will help a right method to search for the position of balancing weight and serves as baseline for further measurements using low cost and much easier user convenience. It is concluded that the propose baseline is likely to be applicable to apply to the practical field balancing weight.

  • Ship's diesel engines have intrinsic problem to make vibrations caused by cylinder explosion and unbalanced rotating mass. These vibrations might induce noises, are transferred to hull and neighboring structures and cause secondary vibrations. This paper suggests the use of an additional dynamic absorber with a sub-vibration system to reduce the aforementioned vibrations. This dynamic absorber is designed based on an analysis of the free vibration of the engine shafting system and the forced vibrations.

  • Magnetic seal uses a magnetic fluid to seal a gap between a rotating shaft and housing. It is distinguished from other kinds of seals from the fact that solid contact does not occur in the seal. This implies that it is free from solid rubbing thus dustless and provides a clean circumstance. That is the reason why the magnetic seal is used exclusively for most of vacuum chambers in semiconductor process where dustless clean circumstance is critical. A magnetic seal has been developed of which design parameters are determined based on published data, and an air pressure test has been done to examine its sealing capability. Effects of some design parameters have been studied through FEM analysis. The results show some notable aspects of design parameters and provide suggestions for developing the seals. Regarding the sealing capacity of the magnetic seal the factor to match the theoretical value with the actual one was found to be 0.4~0.7, which means still there is some discrepancy between theory and actual.

  • Magnetic fluid seal is characterized by its simple design, low friction and being dustless. Those advantages are deduced from the fact that the sealing element is not a solid such as rubber or plastic but it is a fluid. Those are critical for application to a rotating shaft which is inserted into a vacuum chamber where high level of vacuum and cleanness are required. For the reason the magnetic fluid seal has become a standard for vacuum chambers for semiconductor and LCD processing. It should be noted that its sealing performance is sensitive to temperature. If necessary, water cooling should be considered. Thus anticipation of the temperature distribution of the magnetic fluid seal is important before applying it. In this paper an FEM analysis of the heat transfer has been executed and compared with experimental results. An overall convective heat transfer coefficient has been adopted for the analysis, which results in satisfactory consistency of the theoretical and experimental results.

  • This study proposes a procedure for designing a labyrinth seal that meets both leakage flow rate and rotordynamic performance criteria (effective damping, amplification factor, separation margin, logarithmic decrement, and vibration amplitude). The seal is modeled using a one control volume (1CV) bulk flow approach to predict the leakage flow rate and rotordynamic coefficients. The rotating shaft is modeled with the finite element (FE) method and is assumed to be supported by two linearized bearings. Geometry, material and operating conditions of the rotating shaft, and the supporting characteristics of the bearings were fixed. A single labyrinth seal is placed at the center of the rotor, and the linearized dynamic coefficients predicted by the seal numerical model are inserted as linear springs and dampers at the seal position. Seal designs that satisfy both leakage and rotordynamic performance are searched by modifying five seal design parameters using the multi-grid method. The five design parameters include pre-swirl ratio, number of teeth, tooth pitch, tooth height and tooth tip width. In total, 12500 seal models are examined and the optimal seal design is selected. Finally, normalization was performed to select the optimal labyrinth seal designs that satisfy the system performance requirements.
