  • The tilting train is able to tilt its body towards the center of the turning radius, preventing roll-over of the train as it runs on a curved rail at high-speed. This train, widely accepted for commercial purpose internationally is very beneficial in that the operating time is shortened without much capital investment to the infrastructure where there are many curved rails. Over several years, the Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI) has developed such a train. In this paper, the safety of the Korean tilting train express(TTX) is investigated using a dynamic simulation model. Since, proper safety standards have not been established for the TTX, those for the Korean train express(KTX) is employed instead to analyze the safety and ride comfort of the TTX. This study will prove useful in predicting the behavior of the TTX and ride comfort, and conforming that designed TTX measures up to the safety standards. It would be useful to recommend proper normal operating speed and determine the maximum safety speed, according to the result. Furthermore, it would be possible to provide basic reference data when analyzing the dynamic effect of the catenary system and the fatigue of the bogie.

  • The rising demand for the high efficiency and high covertness in UAV motivates the miniature design of the high performing mission sensors, or payloads. One of the promising payload sensors, EO/IR sensor has evolved satisfying its demands and became the main stand-alone mission sensor for 200kg-range UAV. One aspect in development of EO/IR sensor concerns lack of specification criterions to represent its performance. Even though the high demand and competition among each manufacturer caused EO/IR features subject to rapid change collateral to new technology, the datasheets maintained the conventional outdated formats which leave some of the major components in ambiguity. Making comparisons or predicting actual performance with such datasheets is hardly worthwhile; yet, they could be important reference guide for the potential customers what to expect for the upcoming EO/IR. According to UAS Roadmap 2007-2032 published by DoD, one of the main potential customers as well as a main investor of EO/IR technology, EO/IR is expected to play key roll in solving urgent problems, such as see and avoid system. This paper will examine the recent representative EO/IR specialized in UAS missions through datasheets to find out current trend and eventually extrapolate the possible future trend.

  • This paper describes an unscented Kalman filter approach to estimate the bias in magnetic field measurements. A microelectromechanical systems attitude heading reference system (MEMS AHRS) was used to measure the magnetic field, together with the acceleration and angular rate. A magnetic field is usually used for yaw detection, while the acceleration serves to detect the roll and pitch. Magnetic field measurements are vulnerable to distortion due to hard-iron effect and soft-iron effect. The bias in the measurement accounts for the hard-iron effect, and this paper focuses on an approach to estimate this bias. The proposed method is compared with other methods through experiments that implement the navigation of an underwater robot using an AHRS and Doppler velocity log. The results verify that the compensation of the bias by the proposed method improves the navigation performance more than or comparable to the compensation by other methods.

  • Many successful developments and microscopic studies have been made on the high quality insulating materials. However, a little attention have given to the macroscopic interface in HV(High Voltage) insulating systems. In this study, AC interfacial breakdown strength and V-t characteristic of the interface between Epoxy/EPDM(ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) are investigated. Electrode system is designed to reduce the charges from electrodes and to have the tangential potentials along the interface between Epoxy/EPDM by FEM(finite elements method). The AC breakdown strength is observed when HV is given to the interface. It is shown that AC interfacial breakdown strength is improved by increasing interfacial pressure and oiling. In particular, it was saturated at certain interfacial pressure level. V-t characteristic is able to extend to the life time of the interface between Epoxy/EPDM. Oiling also plays a good roll in prolongation of the life time.

  • This paper predicts the complex permittivity of MWNT added epoxy depending on agglomeration by numerical analysis. 1wt% MWNT added epoxy specimen is prepared using 3-roll-mill method and its complex permittivity is measured in X-band (8.2~12.4 GHz) using freespace measurement system. The analytic model is comprised of cube epoxy and perfect sphere agglomeration. The complex permittivity of the agglomeration model is predicted by complex permittivity mixing rule using the measured complex permittivity of epoxy and 1 wt% MWNT added epoxy. Commercial electromagnetic analysis software, CST, is used to obtain S-parameter of the analytic model and MATLAB code is used to calculate complex permittivity from the S-parameter. It is confirmed that the complex permittivity increases when the agglomeration size decreases.

  • In this paper, the forward link of UHF RFID system is modeled in accordance with the EPCglobal class 1 generation 2(EPCglobal C1G2) UHF Radio-Frequency Identity protocol specification at $860{\sim}960MHz$. Based on the constructed model, characteristics on the forward link signal for the EPCglobal C1G2 RFID reader are simulated with the help of a MATLAB softwarein order to extract the design parameters of a transmit digital filter which meets the Korean RFID regulations. Herein, the forward link model is consisted of PIE source coding, transmit digital filter, modulation, local oscillator, and antenna. From the simulation results, the ranges of three design parameters(roll-off factor, cutoff frequency, the number of tabs) for transmit digital filter are obtained with different modulation techniques and the Tari(type a reference interval) values. Finally, DSB/SSB-ASK modulation technique can not satisfy the EPCglobal C1G2 specification when Tari equals to $6.25{\mu}sec$ in a multiple-reader environment. Consequently this paper can provide a guideline for design parameters of a RFID reader as well as the basic scheme of analyzing frequency interference problems in RFID environments, including multiple-reader and dense-reader environments.

  • As ocean resources in shallow water areas are being exhausted, deep sea development is becoming common these days. Therefore floating type offshore structures are more competitive than fixed type structures, and FPSO is the most popular one these days. FPSO's are generally operated in a specific region and positioned to meet mostly head or bow waves in order to reduce roll motions. However this makes these vessels more vulnerable to green water around the bow region, and therefore the bow shape must be properly designed to mitigate green water damage. In the present study, experimental results for three different FPSO bow shapes in regular head waves were analyzed and compared to each other. Also CFD computations were carried out as a sample validation case for the database built for CFD code validation.

  • The RCS value of maritime ship is indicator of ship's stealth performance and it should be particularly measured for navy ship to ensure survivability on the battlefield. In the design phase of the navy ship, a RCS prediction should be performed to reduce RCS value and achieve ROC(Required Operational Capability) of the ship through configuration control. In operational phase, the RCS value of the ship should be measured for verifying the designed value and obtaining tactical data to take action against enemy missile. During the measurement of RCS for the ship, ship motion can be affected by roll and pitch in accordance with sea state, which should be analyzed into threat elevation from view point of enemy missile. In this paper, we propose a method to measure and analyze RCS of ship in 3-dimensions using a ship motion measuring instrument and a fixed RCS measurement system. In order to verify the proposed method, we conducted a marine experiment using a test ship in sea environment and compared the measurement data with RCS prediction value which is carried by prediction SW($CornerStone^{TM}$) using CAD model of the ship.

  • This paper reports a filtered velocity feedback(FVF) controller, which is an alternative to direct velocity feedback(DVFB) controller. The instability problems at high frequencies due to non-collocated sensor/actuator configuration with the DVFB can be alleviated by the proposed FVF controller. The FVF controller is designed to filter out the unstable high frequency response. The dynamics of a clamped plate under forces and moments and the FVF controllers are formulated. The stability of the control system and performance are investigated with the open loop transfer function(OLTF). It is found that the FVF controller has a higher gain margin than the corresponding DVFB controller owing to the rapid roll-off behavior at high frequencies. Although the gain margin cannot be fully utilized because of the enhancement at the high frequencies, the vibration at the modes lower than the tuning frequency is well controlled. This performance of the FVF controller is shown to be improved from that of the DVFB controller. It is, however, noted that the stability around the tuning frequency is very sensitive so that the enhancement in vibration level should be followed. The reduction performance at low frequencies using the FVF controller should be compromised with the enhancement in the vibration at high frequencies while designing the controller.
