  • Recently, AI has become a crucial tool in mathematics education due to advances in machine learning and deep learning. Considering the importance of AI, examining teachers' beliefs about AI in mathematics education (AIME) is crucial, as these beliefs affect their instruction and student learning experiences. The present study developed a scale to measure preservice teachers' (PST) beliefs about AIME through factor analysis and rigorous reliability and validity analyses. The study analyzed 202 PST's data and developed a scale comprising three factors and 11 items. The first factor gauges PSTs' beliefs regarding their roles in using AI for mathematics education (4 items), the second factor assesses PSTs' beliefs about using AI for mathematics teaching (3 items), and the third factor explores PSTs' beliefs about AI for mathematics learning (4 items). Moreover, the outcomes of confirmatory factor analysis affirm that the three-factor model outperforms other models (a one-factor or a two-factor model). These findings are in line with previous scales examining mathematics teacher beliefs, reinforcing the notion that such beliefs are multifaceted and developed through diverse experiences. Descriptive analysis reveals that overall PSTs exhibit positive beliefs about AIME. However, they show relatively lower levels of beliefs about their roles in using AI for mathematics education. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

  • This qualitative research describes unique features of seven exemplary science teachers' professional development activities. Description of excellence in effective teachers' professional development efforts will provide some insights into required inservice initiatives and support systems for teachers' professional learning. Exemplary science teachers' professional development activities can be classified into four types: (1) practicing classroom supervision, (2) participating in voluntary communities of teachers, (3) playing instructional leader roles in teacher training programs, and (4) continuing one's studies at a graduate school. One of the common features of these exemplary teachers was that they can both articulate what makes teachers professionals and practice in accordance with their perspectives. These exemplary teachers not only improved their own classroom practices, but also participated actively in various professional communities to share their practical knowledge with their colleagues. The teachers have formed special-interest groups to investigate better ways of science teaching. They also took an active role in teachers' in-service education. Teachers' quality practices lie at the heart of classroom change. However, it's important to remember that there must be a support system that sustains and encourages teachers' initiatives. The implications for the support system to encourage teachers' professional development efforts are discussed.

  • Language Capital is one of the most important academic abilities and competencies for new era of globalization worldwide. In Europe and Asia where English is not the native language, it is necessary to encourage higher education to improve language competency from both qualitative and quantitative aspects. In so far as online university concerned, it appears of significance to prepare for globalization from the perspective of cross border education, and it needs to focus on how to design and develop English-medium teaching (EMT) or in other words English mediated instruction(EMI) for both teachers and students. In order to provide supportive programs of English-mediated class for teachers and students, the study examined and analyzed what abilities are needed for teachers based on DACUUM approach, suggesting teachers' competency as well as strategies for online- EMT. Based on literature review, DACUUM analysis, focus group interview with teachers and students who experienced online EMT, online programs supporting both teachers and students for online EMI were developed. This program expects to play roles of practical guidelines and reference for both teachers and students online in an extension of language capital improvement.

  • It is undeniable that teachers play the principal roles in education. This is why education and professional development of teachers are so important. Some of recent works have made this fact clearer. In America, in particular, many reports and research papers have recently been published on these problems. In this paper, we first introduce briefly the current system of education, employment, and professional development of mathematics teachers in Korea. And then we mention a research project on education of mathematics teachers. The final report of the project contains some suggestions for curriculums of the department for education of mathematics teachers. We describe one example of extended syllabus which implements those suggestions. The example is on Modern Algebra I.

  • The purpose of this article is to suggest using portfolio for professional development of secondary pre-service mathematics teachers based on actual application case. To achieve this goal, 28 pre-service mathematics teachers developed their own portfolios in the regular study course for one semester under the pre-planned components of portfolio. Then they participated in the survey of their beliefs in mathematics and mathematics education and in the structured interview for drawing implications of using a pre-service mathematics teacher portfolio. According to the collected data, developing a pre-service mathematics teacher portfolio made a significant difference in beliefs of mathematics teachers' roles and showed the potential to improve the professional development of pre-service mathematics teachers as well as their learning. Continued investigation for more effective components of a pre-service mathematics teacher portfolio would be needed.

  • Our gorvernment announced an educational reformation bill to establish the institutional foundation of educational system on May 31, in 1995. To secure the open education which is to foster students' creativity, individualization and personalization, it was requested that the past teacher-centered system should be changed to learner-centered system. To gurantee such a change, however, there are many conditions that has to be satisfied first. I think that the most important thing for the new system is a close interaction between teachers and students. To accomplish a successful interaction, the teachers' understanding and attitude toward their students must change at first. The purpose of this study is to examine what kind of understanding and attitude the teachers need, and what kind of roles teachers must take charge of. At the same time, I suggest that we need to establish a Teacher Center to give teachers a seperate place to learn new theories, and to exchange among themselves the informations they got from the actual field experience.
