  • In order to calculate the thermal stresses of massive concrete structures in non-steady state conditions the thermal properties of the materials have to be well known. Structural materials such as concrete, rock and soil are heterogeneous, damp and porous so that measurements of their thermal properties by conventional methods would result in large errors. In this study, thermal conductivity was measured by the device, QTM-D3 which is usually used in Japan. Variables are chosen as age, water content, temperature, aggregate content, S/A ratio and type of cementitious materials. Finally a model for thermal conductivity was proposed.

  • The construction road and addition work are increasing now. Therefore, slope stability is important in construction slope on the fault and fractured zone. Rock bolt method, soil nailing method and anchor method are applied to reinforcement method of slope. This paper is the study for construction management on reinforcement method of slope.

  • Near-field ground motions exhibit special characteristics that are different from ordinary far-field ground motions. This paper first briefly examines the characteristics of near-field ground motions associated with fault directivity and fling-step effects. Then evaluation of near-field ground motions by inelatstic response spectrum analysis is performed and analyzed. As a result, ductility demand in near-field ground motions is larger in hanging wall than in foot wall in long period regions. Also in long period regions ductility demand in soil site is larger than that in rock site.

  • In this study, execution costs of the foundation system are compared with PHC and steel pile in the same soil layers and load condition. Steel piles installed on the thin weathered rock are reduced as 12.5% in comparison with the number of PHC piles. Steel piles installed on the soft rock through weathered rock with 1.7m of thickness reduce the number of piles as 35.7% (STK 400) and 46.4% (STK 490), respectively, in comparison with PHC piles installed on the weathered rock. Also, they reduce the number of piles as 26.5% (STK 400) and 38.8% (STK 490), respectively, in comparison with steel piles (STK 400) installed on the weathered rock. When the thickness of footings is constant, steel piles installed on the soft rock may reduce the area of footings up to 12.2% (STK 400) and 45.4% (STK 490), respectively, in comparison with PHC piles installed on the weathered rock. Total cost of foundation system installed on the soft rock with steel piles (STK 400) increases as 12%, whereas in case of replaced with steel piles (STK 490), it reduces as 16% in comparison with PHC piles installed on the weathered rock. This is because the cost reduction due to the number of piles and footing area is more effective despite high cost of steel piles (STK 490). When the thickness of weathered rock is less than 5m, installing steel piles (STK 490) on the soft rock through it is more economic in comparison with installing PHC piles on the weathered rock.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the geographical and environmental distribution of wild animals in Baekdudaegan region using field survey and GIS data. Crucial factors were selected and analyzed to understand the distributional characteristics of wild animals (7 species in 6 families) and rare endemic plants (14 species in 11 families). These crucial factors include stand factors (forest type, DBH class, and crown density), soil factors (bed rock, soil texture, and organic matter), geographical factors (elevation, slope, aspect) and climatic factors (temperature, rain fall, humidity). Finally, 10 factors were selected by statistical analysis and categorized for analyzing geographical and environmental features. Four families such as Muridae, Sciuridae, Suidae and Talpidea in wild animal showed the similar habitat characteristics with the 10 factors.

  • Electric transmission lines pass through a variety of area. Foundation supporting the conductors and tower are selected properly in accordance with external load, for example dead load, wind load, snow load, construction load etc, and topography and geology condition. Typical types of foundation are as follows: pad foundation for small load and hard soil or rock in mountainous area, pile foundation for medium or large load and soft soil in plain field area. This paper introduced cylindrical foundation design & construction for large load and mountainous area. This foundation failure mode against pulling-out show splitting failure by tensile force toward circumferential direction.

  • The load distribution and deformation of drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. The emphasis was on quantifying the load transfer mechanism at the interface between the shafts and surrounding highly weathered rocks based on a numerical analysis and small-scale tension load tests performed on nine instrumented piles. An analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Based on the analysis, a single-modified hyperbolic model is proposed for the shear transfer function of drilled shafts in highly weathered rocks. Through comparisons with field case studies, it is found that the prediction by the present approach is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in-situ measurements.

  • For tile hydrogeological data of the National Groundwater Monitoring Wells(NGMW), a statistical analysis is made to reveal aquifer characteristics of the country. Results of the pumping and recovery test are classified into 4~5 types by the pattern of drawdown and residual drawdown curves. The analysis of aquifer characteristics shows that the hydraulic conductivity of alluvial aquifers is greater than that of fractured-rock aquifers. The hydraulic conductivity of alluvial aquifers slightly increases as the distance to the discharge area decreases. 77.5% of the NGMWs, where the distance to the discharge area is more than 100m, shows the constant head boundary. This result suggests that the fractured and the alluvial aquifers are fairly interconnected, and water can be supplied from one aquifer to tile other where pumping tests are performed. It is analyzed that the wells showing the impermeable boundary are influenced by small scale of aquifers, poor aquifer transmissivities, and impermeable layers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in the Umsung area, and to elucidate the effect of host rock type, well depth and mineralization zone on the groundwater chemistry, We carried out chemical analysis, isotopic analysis, statistical analysis of Box-Whisker and trigging analysis for this study. The chemical and isotopic compositions of the groundwater is distinguished into two areas according to host rocks(Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and Jurassic granite) and recharge altitude, and is not greatly influenced by mineralization zone of the mines.
