  • Robots will be able to coexist with humans and support humans effectively in near future. One of the most important aspects in the development of human-friendly robots is to cooperation between humans and robots. In this paper, we proposed a method for multi-object identification in order to achieve such human-centered system and robot localization in intelligent space. The intelligent space is the space where many intelligent devices, such as computers and sensors, are distributed. The Intelligent Space achieves the human centered services by accelerating the physical and psychological interaction between humans and intelligent devices. As an intelligent device of the Intelligent Space, a color CCD camera module, which includes processing and networking part, has been chosen. The Intelligent Space requires functions of identifying and tracking the multiple objects to realize appropriate services to users under the multi-camera environments. In order to achieve seamless tracking and location estimation many camera modules are distributed. They causes some errors about object identification among different camera modules. This paper describes appearance based object representation for the distributed vision system in Intelligent Space to achieve consistent labeling of all objects. Then, we discuss how to learn the object color appearance model and how to achieve the multi-object tracking under occlusions.

  • Lobectomy is the standard treatment for early non-small cell lung cancer. Various surgical techniques for lobectomy have been developed, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery, such as video-assisted thoracic surgery or robot-assisted thoracic surgery, has been considered as an alternative to conventional open thoracotomy. The recently robotic lobectomy technique has developed since the first case series was published in 2002. Several studies have reported that robotic lobectomy has comparable oncologic and perioperative outcomes to those of video-assisted thoracic surgery lobectomy and open lobectomy. However, robotic lobectomy remains a challenge for surgeons because of the steep learning curve, reduced tactile sensation, difficulty in port placement, and challenges in cooperation between the surgeon and assistant. Many studies have reported on robotic lobectomy, but few have presented surgical techniques for robotic lobectomy. In this article, the surgical techniques and optimal performance of robotic lobectomy are described in detail for all 5 types of lobectomy for surgeons beginning with robotic lobectomy.

  • A human-friendly interactive system that is based on the harmonious symbiotic coexistence of human and robots is explored. Based on interactive technology paradigm, a robotic cane is proposed for blind or visually impaired travelers to navigate safely and quickly through obstacles and other hazards faced by blind pedestrians. Robotic aids, such as robotic canes, require cooperation between human and robots. Various methods for implementing the appropriate cooperative recognition, planning, and acting, have been investigated. The issues discussed include the interaction of human and robot, design issues of an interactive robotic cane, and behavior arbitration methodologies for navigation planning.

  • Recently, internet-based applications can be found easily in various felds. Internet-based telerobot system becomes one of important applications of internet. Among many important technological issues on the internet-based telerobot, time-delay is inherently critical problem to be solved. Time-delay is classified as micro time-delay and macro time-delay in this paper. Algorithms for compensation of path-error and time-error are proposed for the both types of time-delays using fuzzy logic since fuzzy logic is one of the best tools to represent expert's knowledge. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of the communication system for cooperative behavior and control in a collective autonomous mobile robots. A communication function among the collective robots is essential to intelligent cooperation. In general, global communication is effective for small number of robots. However when the number of robot goes on increasing, this becomes difficult to be realized because of limited communication capacity and increasing amount of information to handle. And also the problems such as communication interference and improper message transmission occur. So we propose local communication system based on infrared sensor to realize the cooperative behavior and control as the solution of above problem. It is possible to prevent overflow of information and exchange of complex information by combining communicate a specific robot. At last we verify the effectiveness of the proposed communication system from example of cooperative behavior.

  • We have built a robot soccer system to participate in MIROSOT97. This paper represents hardware specification of our system and our strategy. We select a centralized on-line system for a soccer game. The paper explains hardware specifications of our system for later development. Also, the paper explains our strategy from two viewpoints. From the viewpoint of cooperation, some heuristic ideas are implemented. From the viewpoint of path plan, Cubic spline is used with cost function which minimized time, radius of curvature for smoothness, and obstacle potential field. Direct comparison will be realized in MIROSOT97.

  • In this paper, we present the Q-learning method for adaptive traffic signal control on the basis of multi-agent technology. The structure is composed of sixphase agents and one intersection agent. Wireless communication network provides the possibility of the cooperation of agents. As one kind of reinforcement learning, Q-learning is adopted as the algorithm of the control mechanism, which can acquire optical control strategies from delayed reward; furthermore, we adopt dynamic learning method instead of static method, which is more practical. Simulation result indicates that it is more effective than traditional signal system.
