  • Composite skew plates are aesthetically appealing light weight structural units finding wide applications in floors and roofs of commercial buildings. Although bending and vibration characteristics of these units have received attention from researchers but the domain of first and progressive failure has not been explored. Confident use of these plates necessitates comprehensive understanding of their failure behavior. With this objective, the present paper uses an eight noded isoparametric finite element together with von-Kármán's approach of nonlinear strains to study first ply and progressive failure up to ultimate damage of skew plates being subjected to uniform surface pressure. Parameters like skew angles, laminations and boundary conditions are varied and the results are practically analyzed. The novelty of the paper lies in the fact that the stiffness matrix of the damaged plate is calculated by considering material degradation locally only at failed points at each stage of first and progressive failure and as a result, the present outputs are so close to experimental findings. Interpretation of results from practical angles and proposing the relative performances of the different plate combinations in terms of ranks will be of much help to practicing engineers in selecting the best suited plate option among many combinations.

  • Science and technology is developing rapidly as more powerful software with the rapid development of software testing and reliability assessment by the difficulty increases with the complexity of the software features of the larger increases NHPP software reliability models for failure analysis can have, in the literature, exhibit either constant, monotonic increasing or monotonic decreasing failure occurrence rates per fault. In this paper, finite failure NHPP models that assuming the expected value of the defect and infinite failures NHPP models that repairing software failure point in time reflects the situation, were presented for comparing property. Commonly used in the field of software reliability based on Erlang distribution software reliability model finite failures and infinite failures were presented for performance comparative evaluation problem. As a result, finite failure model is better than infinite failure model effectively. The parameters estimation using maximum likelihood estimation in the course of this study was conducted. As the results of this research, software developers to identify software failure property be able to help is concluded.

  • This study proposes a multi-scale dynamic system reliability analysis of control system as a method of quantitative evaluation of its performance in probabilistic terms. In this second paper, we discuss the control effect of the viscous damper on the seismic performance of the structure-level failure. Since the failure of one structural member does not necessarily cause the collapse of the structural system, we need to consider a set of failure scenarios of the structural system and compute the sum of the failure probabilities of the failure scenarios where the statistical dependence between the failure scenarios should be taken into account. Therefore, this computation requires additional system reliability analysis. As a result, the proposed approach takes a hierarchial framework where the failure probability of a structural member is computed using a lower-scale system reliability with the union set of time-sequential member failures and their statistical dependence, and the failure probability of the structural system is again computed using a higher-scale system reliability with the member failure probabilities obtained by the lower-scale system reliability and their statistical dependence. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach can provide an accurate and stable reliability assessment of the control performance of the viscous damper system on the system failure. Also, the parametric study of damper capacity on the seismic performance has been performed to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach through the probabilistic assessment of the seismic performance improvement of the damper system.

  • The pharmacokinetic of tolbutamide was studied after the oral administration to normal rabbits or rabbits with mild to medium folate-induced renal failure. The plasma concentrations of tolbutamide were significantly elevated (p<0.05) during 9 to 24 h in rabbits with mild or medium folate-induced renal failure. Consequently, the area under the plasma concentration-time curves (AUC) was significantly higher in mild (p<0.05) and medium (p<0.01) folate-induced renal failure rabbits (i.e., 2906 $\mu$g/mL$.$h for mild renal failure and 4074 $\mu$g/mL$.$h for moderate renal failure) than that in normal rabbits (i.e., 2295 $\mu$g/mL$.$h). The cumulative urinary excretion of tolbutamide was significantly depressed (p<0.05) in medium folate-induced renal failure rabbits (i.e., 3.3 mg) compared with that in normal rabbits (i.e., 5.9 mg). The elimination rate constant (Kel) of tolbutamide was significantly decreased in medium renal failure rabbits (i.e., 0.027 $h^{-1}$) than that in normal rabbits (i.e., 0.044 $h^{-1}$ ); As a result, the terminal half-life of tolbutamide in medium folate-induced renal failure rabbits (i.e., 25.5 h) was significantly longer (p<0.01) than that in normal rabbits (i.e., 15.7 h). The change in pharmacokinetic parameters is consistent with the hypothesis that the alteration is mediated by the depressed metabolic elimination of the drug by the induction of renal failure. Therefore, these observations indicated that the dosage adjustment may be necessary for tolbutamide in patients with renal insufficiency.

  • In this paper, a progressive failure analysis method was developed using the Hashin failure criterion and crack band model. Using the failure criterion, the failure initiation was evaluated. If the failure initiation is occurred, the damage variables at each failure modes (fiber tension & compression, matrix tension & compression) was calculated according to linear softening degradation behavior and the variables are used to derive the damaged stiffness matrix. The damaged stiffness matrix is reflected to damaged material and the progressive failure analysis is continued until the damage variables to be 1 that complete failure of material. A series of processes were performed using FE commercial code ABAQUS with user defined material subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the proposed progressive failure model, the experimental results of open hole composite laminate tests was compared with numerical result. Using digital image correlation system, the strain behavior also was compared. The proposed numerical results were coincided well with the experimental results.

  • Back analysis has been used to evaluate the factor of safety and circular failure plane at the landfill failure site. However, the estimated circular failure plane by back analysis is quite different from what is observed in the field. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate an actual shear failure plane inside the ground which gives a more accurate failure plane. Cone penetration test (CPT), boring test, soft X-ray image scan, density logging, and ultrasonic logging were conducted at the field and laboratory. The result of CPT showed significantly lower cone resistance, pore pressure, and undrained shear strength at a particular part. This part is a possible shear failure plane inside the ground. To validate, the soft X-ray scan images were analyzed and found the disturbed (inclined) bedding plane induced by shear activity at the estimated shear failure plane. Density and ultrasonic logging tests also found a similar result. Thus, the method in this study is possible to estimate the shear failure plane inside the ground.

  • In this study, a series of triaxial tests to Jeju basalt were carried out and then shear strength parameters of rock were estimated by the Lade's three-dimensional failure criterion. Also, the characteristics of shear strength parameters and failure plane which were estimated by the three-dimensional failure criterion were analyzed and this failure criterion was compared with the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The variables of ${\eta}_1$ and m are derived from the relationship between ($I_1^3/I_3-27$) and ($P_a/I_1$) during the failure period using the Lade's three-dimensional failure criterion. The failure plane size of Tracy-basalt has the largest plane and that of Scoria has the smallest plane among other octahedral planes which is the three-dimensional failure plane. Also, the failure plane of Tracy-basalt is formed as a triangle and that of Scoria is formed as a circle among other octahedral planes. As the result of comparison with the triaxial test results and the Lade's failure envelope and the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope, the Lade's failure envelope matched up under higher stress, while the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope matched up under lower stress. Also, the Lade's three-dimensional failure plane is larger than the Mohr-Coulomb three-dimensional failure plane. It means that the shear strength parameters estimated by the Lade's failure criterion is larger than that of the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion.

  • The use of tractors to carry out agricultural work has played an important role in mechanizing the agricultural sector. A repairable mechanical system (such as an agricultural tractor) is subject to deterioration or failure. In this study, a regression model was used to predict the failure rate of a John Deere 3140 tractor. The machine failure pattern was carefully studied, and key factors affecting the failure rate were identified in five regions of the Khouzestan province. Through a questionnaire, data was obtained from farm records. This data was grouped into six sub-groups, according to the annual use hours (AUH) and the manner in which the tractors were stored. Results showed that AUH and storage policies affected failure rate slightly. With an increase in the age of the tractors, the failure rate in the tractors used for 1050-2000 hours annually and stored outdoors was higher than those used for 200-1000 hours annually and stored in sheds. When the tractors were of the same age, the slope of the curve in the 200-1000 annual use hours increased gradually and then rapidly, but failure rate in the 1050-2000 annual use hours was high from the beginning, and subsequent increase in this value was almost uniform. As a result, it can be said that with an increase in the annual use hours, the failure and breakdown rate in John Deere 3140 tractors rapidly increases, but maintenance conditions only slightly affect the failure and breakdown rate.

  • Pushover analysis has gained significant popularity as an analytical tool for realistic determination of the inelastic behaviour of RC structures. Though significant work has been done to evaluate the demands realistically, the evaluation of capacity and realistic failure modes has taken a back seat. In order to throw light on the inelastic behaviour and capacity evaluation for the RC framed structures, a 3D Reinforced concrete frame structure was tested under monotonically increasing lateral pushover loads, in a parabolic pattern, till failure. The structure consisted of three storeys and had 2 bays along the two orthogonal directions. The structure was gradually pushed in small increments of load and the corresponding displacements were monitored continuously, leading to a pushover curve for the structure as a result of the test along with other relevant information such as strains on reinforcement bars at critical locations, failure modes etc. The major failure modes were observed as flexural failure of beams and columns, torsional failure of transverse beams and joint shear failure. The analysis of the structure was by considering all these failure modes. In order to have a comparison, the analysis was performed as three different cases. In one case, only the flexural hinges were modelled for critical locations in beams and columns; in second the torsional hinges for transverse beams were included in the analysis and in the third case, joint shear hinges were also included in the analysis. It is shown that modelling and capturing all the failure modes is practically possible and such an analysis can provide the realistic insight into the behaviour of the structure.

  • As a result of vehicle maintenance of rocker arm shaft for 4-cylinder SOHC engine, failure stress analysis of rocker arm shaft is needed. Because more than 30% of vehicles investigated have been fractured. Failure stress analysis is classified into an naked eyes, microscope, striation and X-ray fractography etc. Failure stress analysis by using striation is already established technology as means for seeking cause of fracture. But, although it is well known that striation spacing corresponds to the crack growth rate da/dN, it is not possible to determine ${\sigma}_{max}\;and\;{\sigma}_{min}$ under service loading only from striation spacing. This is because the value of striation spacing is influenced not only by ${\Delta}K$ but also by the stress ratio R. In the present paper, we determine the stress ratio using orthogonal array and ANOVA, and propose a prediction method of failure stress which is combined with FEM and striation.
