The cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures is generally evaluated by measuring a single parameter (i.e., Tensile strength, Stiffness). However, the use of a single parameter has been questioned in the evaluation of asphalt mixture cracking performance. The focus of this study was to clearly identify the key properties and characteristics associated with the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Results of fracture, creep, and strength tests at multiple loading rates performed on the modified and unmodified mixtures showed that the mixture cracking resistance was primarily affected by the rate of micro-damage accumulation. This was reflected in the m-value, without affecting the fracture energy limit. It was also observed that the short loading time (elastic) stiffness alone could not differentiate the mixture cracking resistance of the mixtures. It was concluded that the key to characterize the cracking resistance of asphalt mixture is in the evaluation of the combined effects of creep and failure limits. It was also found that a residual dissipated energy parameter measured from Superpave IDT strength test gave the quick and useful way to distinguish the difference of cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Failure strain in the longer-term creep test appeared to be a useful parameter for evaluating the combined effects of creep and failure limits of asphalt mixtures.
This research was planned to evaluate the structural performance of post tensioned(PT) concrete member subjected to fire. Prime objective was to suggest some techniques to evaluate the performance of post tensioned concrete beam and slab exposed to high temperature through experiment. To accomplish this objective, the following two scopes have been proceeded to verify the strength reducing ratio of strands and find out the difference of resisting force at the PT concrete members exposed to high temperature through the fire test. The properties of prestressing steel(tendon) in PT concrete beam and slab under variable temperatures were reviewed. The test of this study was shown that stress relaxation occurred at high temperature, and some restoration of tensional force appeared as it got cooling down. The residual tension of the post tensioned beams at 4 hours after reaching the target temperature were 70% at $400^{\circ}C$, 10% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 2% at $800^{\circ}C$. The post tensioned slabs were 94% at $400^{\circ}C$, 84.5% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 62% at $800^{\circ}C$. The reason why the residual tension loss of the post tensioned slab was relatively small was considered to be that the slab was exposed just one side to high temperature and the strength of the strand was restored larger than that of beam. Also, it was confirmed that the post tensioned member inevitably experienced the loss of strength by fire damage, and restoration design of the member should be required to compensate for the value as much as lost strength.
A multi-Gaussian kriging approach extended to space-time domain is presented for uncertainty modeling as well as time-series mapping of environmental variables. Within a multi-Gaussian framework, normal score transformed environmental variables are first decomposed into deterministic trend and stochastic residual components. After local temporal trend models are constructed, the parameters of the models are estimated and interpolated in space. Space-time correlation structures of stationary residual components are quantified using a product-sum space-time variogram model. The ccdf is modeled at all grid locations using this space-time variogram model and space-time kriging. Finally, e-type estimates and conditional variances are computed from the ccdf models for spatial mapping and uncertainty analysis, respectively. The proposed approach is illustrated through a case of time-series Particulate Matter 10 ($PM_{10}$) concentration mapping in Incheon Metropolitan city using monthly $PM_{10}$ concentrations at 13 stations for 3 years. It is shown that the proposed approach would generate reliable time-series $PM_{10}$ concentration maps with less mean bias and better prediction capability, compared to conventional spatial-only ordinary kriging. It is also demonstrated that the conditional variances and the probability exceeding a certain thresholding value would be useful information sources for interpretation.

Monitoring the pesticide residues in agricultural products is essential to protect consumers, obtain data for risk assessment, and ensure fair trade practices. We developed a multi-residue method for the analysis of 37 pesticides with different physico-chemical properties in agricultural products and analyzed the amount of pesticide residues on about 1,000 samples circulated in South Korea. The samples consisted of 26 different types of agricultural products selected at markets in 14 major cities; cereals (2 species), nuts (1 species) potatoes (1 species), beans (2 species), fruits (3 species), vegetables (16 species), and mushrooms (1 species). In this study, residual pesticides were detected in 23 samples (2.2%) and one sample was detected to be over maximum residue limits (MRLs, 0.1%) for pesticides in foods by the Korea food code. In leafy vegetables such as pepper leaves, radish leaves, cham-na-mul, shin-sun-cho, crown daisy, chwi-na-mul and citrus fruits such as kumquat, 8 kinds of pesticides were detected. Specially, diazinon were detected over MRLs and also, endosulfan, ethoprophos and phenthoate were detected frequently. Based on these results, we investigated the risk assesment from amount of residual pesticide, total %ADI was 1.262%, but the value has not effected on human health.

A load effect by vehicles running on a road and an increase of traffic is distinguished as a serious issue in the level of bridges' maintenance and management since it causes a quick damage of bridges. The expansion joint is the most important since it makes vehicles' traveling amicable and stress or additional load harmful to molding patterns minimized. However, it is very difficult to measure its expansion length since vehicles continue to pass on the expansion joint. Therefore, the study could see that it was possible to carry out a qualitative and quantitative maintenance and management if its expansion length is extracted with images. The study could acquire three dimensional coordinates of expansion joints with images. As the results of calculating RMSE of check point residual at 32 points in A area and at 28 points in B area, both A and B areas had very good results of RMSEsms 0.829mm~1.680mm. As the results of analyzing expansion length and immediate value extracted by images, the study analyzed that RMSE of A area was 0.64mm and RMSE of B area was 0.28. The average residual of A area was 0.60% and the average rresidual of B area was 0.27%. Therefore, it is judged that it is more scientific and efficient than the past to measure expansion length with images at the time of repairing and managing bridges in the future.
Ceramometal crowns are common restorations in fixed prosthodontics because of their casting accuracy, the high strength properties of the metal, and the cosmetic appearance of porcelain. However, deterioration of the initial fit of the metal coping has been observed after the porcelain firing cycle. The distortion due to repeated firing makes it difficult to fit crown margin and elicits microleakage. The major causes of distortion are the residual stress that accumulate during wax-up, casting, cold work and the induced stress caused by the mismatch of porcelain-metal thermal contraction. This study examined the marginal fit changes of metal copings in relation to repeated firing and the effects of heat treatment that reduce the distortion resulted from residual stress. The marginal changes of the copings that were treated with conventional method and those treated with heat before repeated firing, were evaluated. The metal die which represented preparations of a maxillary central incisor was fabricated, and 45 wax patterns were cast with nonprecious metal alloys. The heat treatment of each group was performed as follows. Group 1(control) : Casting - Devesting - Cold work - Firing Group 2 : Casting - Heat treatment - Devesting - Cold work - Firing Group 3 : Casting - Devesting - Cold work - Reinvesting - Heat treatment - Devesting - Firing The copings were fired 3 times. After each firing, the marginal fit changes were measured with inverted metallurgical microscope at the 4 reference points located at labial, lingual, and both proximal surface. Measurements were compared, and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows ; 1. In all groups, the highest value of marginal fit changes of the copings studied were found after the first firing cycle. 2. When the distortion of each experimental group at the first firing cycle were compared, group 1 exhibited the greatest changes($20-27{\mu}m$), followed by group 2($9-13{\mu}m$), and group 3($8-10{\mu}m$). 3. The copings treated with heat before devesting(group 2) revealed significantly smaller marginal fit changes than the copings treated with conventional method(group 1). (p<0.01) 4. The copings treated with heat after reinvesting(group 3) revealed significantly smaller marginal fit changes than the copings treated with conventional method(group 1). (p<0.01) 5. No siginificant differences in marginal fit changes were found between the copings treated with heat before devesting(group 2) and the copings treated with heat after reinvesting(group 3). (p>0.01)
BACKGROUND: Residual organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are chemical substances that persist in the environment, bioaccumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effect to human health and the environment. They were designated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by Stockholm Convention. Greenhouse strawberry is economic crop in agriculture, and its cultivation area and yield has been increased. Therefore, we tried to investigate the POPs residue in greenhouse soil and strawberry.METHODS AND RESULTS: Extraction and clean-up method for the quantitative analysis of OCPs was developed and validated by gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detector (ECD). The clean-up method was established using the modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe(QuEChERS) method for OCPs in soil and strawberry. Limit of quantitation (LOQ) and recovery rates of OCPs in greenhouse soil and strawberry were 0.9-6.0 and 0.6-0.9 μg/kg, 74.4-115.6 and 75.6-88.4%, respectively. The precision was reliable sincerelative standard deviation (RSD) percentage (0.5-3.7 and 2.9-5.2%) was below 20, which was the normal percent value. The residue of OCPs in greenhouse soil was analyzed by the developed method, and dieldrin, β-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate were detected at 1.6-23, 2.2-28.4 and 1.8-118.6 μg/kg, respectively. Those in strawberry were not detected in all samples.CONCLUSION: Dieldrin, β-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate in a part of investigated greenhouse soil were detected. But those were not detected in investigated greenhouse strawberry. These results showed that the residue in greenhouse soil were lower level than bioaccumulation occurring.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the residual fluoride concentration of polymer adhesive tape in oral cavity which is made by spraying NaF on PVA base and to compare with Fluoride varnish(Cavityshiled$^{TM}$). Experimental groups were divided into two according to application methods; Group 1(NaF-PVA tape) and Group 2(Cavityshiled$^{TM}$). Topical fluoride was applied to 20 healthy adults aged from 25 to 30. Fluoride concentration in unstimulated whole saliva was measured by fluoride-sensitive electrode for 72 hours. 1. Until 72 hours after application in every group, significantly higher fluoride concentration was shown in saliva than baseline value(p<0.05). 2. At 2, 3 and 4 hours after application, Group 2 revealed significantly higher fluoride concentration than Group 1(p<0.05). 3. At 24, 48 and 72 hours after application, there was no significance(p>0.05). Although the residual fluoride concentration of saliva and the amount of fluoride of NaF-PVA tape are lower than those of Cavityshield$^{TM}$, NaF-PVA tape is considered to be more effective since it showed almost the same result as Cavityshield$^{TM}$. Therefore, NaF-PVA tape is expected to be a great fluoride application material.

In the present study, disinfection efficacy of slightly acidic electrolyzed water [SlAEW, 30 ppm of effective chlorine at $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) $562{\pm}23mV$, pH 6.4] on 4 kinds of vegetables (lettuce leaf, endive leaf, perilla leaf and kale leaf) was evaluated to obtain a microbial reduction characteristics which are necessary to design a process control for non-thermal sterilization of fresh vegetables. Active chlorine, residual chlorine, microbial counts and residual microbial counts, which are the key factors in the non-thermal sterilization process were measured by dipping them in SlAEW three times for 30 minutes in order to analyze the relationship between factors. Total microbial count was decreased mostly during the first 10 minutes of washing, and the limit value that can be reduced by immersion treatment was 3 log CFU/g for the total microbial count surviving in 4 kinds of vegetables. The total number of microorganism that can be reduced by washing in SIAEW for 10 min was found to be about 2 log CFU/g on average. In addition, the active chlorine decreased in the initial 10 minutes in 2.2 ppm, 2.0 ppm, 1.7 ppm and 2.5 ppm in lettuce, perilla leaf, endive leaf and kale leaf, respectively, and about 50-80% of the chlorine was reduced in the initial 10 min appear.

In the context of an increasing need for safety in concrete structures under blast and impact loading condition, the behavior of concrete under high strain rate condition has been an important issue. Since concrete subjected to impact loading associated with high strain rate shows quite different material behavior from that in the static state, several material models are proposed and used to describe the high strain rate behavior under blast and impact loading. In the process of modelling high strain rate conditions with these material models, mesh dependency in the used finite element(FE) is the key problem because simulation results under high strain-rate condition are quite sensitive to applied FE mesh size. This paper introduces an criterion which can minimize the mesh-dependency of simulation results on the basis of the fracture energy concept, and HJC(Holmquist Johnson Cook) model is examined to trace sensitivity to the used FE mesh size. To coincide with the purpose of the perforation simulation with a concrete plate under a projectile(bullet), the residual velocities of projectile after perforation are compared. The analytical results show that the variation of residual velocity with the used FE mesh size is quite reduced and accuracy of simulation results are improved by applying a unique failure strain value determined according to the proposed criterion.
