  • Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant in drinking-water systems throughout the world. Chlorine residual was used as an indicator for prediction of water quality in water distribution systems. The variation of chlorine residual in drinking water distribution systems of Suwon city was simulated using EPANET. EPANET is a computerized simulation model which predicts the dynamic hydraulic and water quality behavior within a water distribution system operating over an extended time period. Sampling and analysis were performed to calibrated the computer model in 1999 (Aug. Summer). Water quality variables used in simulations are temperature, roughness coefficient, pipe diameter, pipe length, water demand, velocity and so on. Extended water residence time affected water quality due to the extended reaction time in some areas. All area showed the higher concentration of chlorine residual than 0.2mg/l(standard). So it can be concluded that any area in Suwon city is not in biological regrowth problem. Rechlorination turned out to be an useful method for uniform concentration of free chlorine residual in distribution system. The cost of disinfectant could be saved remarkably by cutting down the initial chlorine concentration to the level which guarantees minimum concentration (0.2mg/l) throughout the distribution system.

  • Since the performance of joints usually determines the structural efficiency of composite structures, an extensive knowledge of the behavior of adhesive joints and the related effect on joint strength is essential for design purposes. In this study, the torque capacity of adhesive joints was predicted using the combined thermal and mechanical analyses when the adherend was a composite tube. A finite element analysis was performed to evaluate residual thermal stresses developed in the joint, and mechanical s stresses in the adhesive were calculated including both the nonlinear adhesive behavior and the behavior of composite tubes. Three different joint failure modes were considered to predict joint failure: interfacial failure, adhesive bulk failure, and adherend failure. The influence of the composite adherend stacking angle on the residual thermal stresses was investigated, and how the residual thermal stresses affect the joint strength was also discussed. Finally, the predicted results were compared with experimental results available in literature.

  • In speaker verification based on LPC analysis the prediction residues are ignored and LPCC(LPC cepstrum) are only used to compose feature vectors. In this study, LPCC and RCEP (residual cepstrum) extracted from residues are used as feature parameters in the various environmental speaker verification. We propose the weighting function which can enlarge inter-speaker variation by weighting pitch, speaker inherent vector, included in residual cepstrum. Simulation results show that the average speaker verification rate is improved in the rate of 6% with RCEP and LPCC at the same time and is improved in the rate of 2.45% with the proposed weighted RCEP and LPCC at the same time compared with no weighting.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive method of welding distortion and residual stress for the channel I butt SA (submerged arc) weldment using FEA. In order to do it, the heat input model for the weldment was defined as the combined heat source with the surface heat flux of gaussian distribution and volumetric heat source uniformly distributed within weld groove by comparing the shapes of molten pool and temperature distribution obtained by FEA with those of experiments. The arc efficiency of SA welding for two-dimensional FE analysis was evaluated as 0.85. The welding distortion and residual stress of the weldment obtained by FEA and heat input model proposed have a good agreement with those obtained by experiment. Based on the results, it was suggested that the proper heat input model should be required to evaluate the welding distortion for weldment.

  • The strength and fatigue life of Satin and Twill-woven CF/epoxy composite(CFRP) have been investigated. Damage mechanism fatigue method has been used to assess fatigue damage accumulation. It is based on measured residual stiffness and residual strength of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates under cyclic loading. Fatigue damage evolution in composite laminates and predict fatigue life of the laminates were simulated by finite element analysis(FEA) method. The stress analysis was carried out in MSC patran/Nastran. A modified Hashin's failure criterion di rmfjapplied to predict the failure of the experimental data of fatigue life but a Ye-delamination criterion was ignored because of 2D modeling. Almost linear stiffness and strength degradation were observed during most of the fatigue process. These stress distribution data were adopted in the simulation to simulate fatigue behavior and estimate life of the laminates. From the results, the predicted fatigue life is more conservatively estimated than the experimental results.

  • The goal of this study is to assess cast iron pipes (CIPs) and present a residual tensile strength prediction model using pit characteristics and fracture toughness. The results is the followings. First, average pit depths of collected CIPs were in the range from 0.63 to 6.49 mm, loss of tensile strength compared with net metallic tensile strength were from -7.06 to 67.91 percent. Second, fracture toughness for NS-CR-1, NS-CR-2, and NS(2)-CR-1 were in the range from 62.85 to $89.39kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$, and average of those samples was $73.69kgf/mm^2{\sqrt{mm}}$ on CIPs. Third, the models developed in this study by using pit characteristics and fracture toughness showed a little good correlation for measured residual tensile strength, and the results will be expected to help for water utilities to manage CIPs in the aspect of rehabilitation and assessment of structural safety on CIPs.

  • Flow prediction was carried out through observational survey and three dimensional multi-layered numerical diagnostic model experiment to clarify the time and spatial structure of tidal current and residual flow dominant in the sea exchange and material circulation of the waters around Geumo Islands in the southern waters of Korea. The horizontal variation of tidal current is so large that it causes asymmetric tidal mixing due to horizontal eddies and the topographical effect creating convergence and dispersion of flow direction and velocity. Due to strong tidal currents flowing northwest-southeast, counterclockwise and clockwise eddies are formed on the left and right sides of the south of Sori Island. These topographical eddies are created by horizontal turbulence and bottom friction causing nonlinear effects. Baroclinic density flows are less than 5 cm/s at coastal area in summer and the entire sea area in winter. The wind driven currents assuming summer and winter seasonal winds are also less than 5 cm/s and the current flow rate is high in winter. Density current in summer and wind driven current in winter have a relatively greater effect on the net residual flows (tidal residual current + density current + density driven current) around Geumo Islands Sea area.

  • We have carried out highway traffic noise prediction and measurement for 10 sites with representative road shapes and structures. A road traffic noise prediction model(NIER('99)) has been developed for environmental impact assessment in Korea. With the fitted regression analysis, the distribution ratio($R^2$) and Pearson correction coefficient(r) was 92.4% and 0.96 in $1^{st}$ floor, 38.7% and 0.66 in $3^{rd}$ floor, 42% and 0.65 in $5^{th}$ floor, 7.5% and 0.27 in $7^{th}$ floor, 28.4% and 0.53 in 10th floor, 35.6% and 0.60 in $13^{th}$ floor, 52.7% and 0.73 in $15^{th}$ floor, respectively. The measured values of the noise level except the 1st floor did not show a good agreement with the predicted noise level in the NIER('99) formula. Also, the NIER('99) formula demonstrated that the measured values weren't reasonably close to the predicted values, indicating the validity and adequacy of the predicted models with the fitted vs residual analysis in the 95% of confidence interval and 95% of predict interval. Using the equal variation on the basis of the residual vs fitted value, there was the significant difference for variation between $3^{rd}$ floor and $15^{th}$ floor except $1^{st}$ floor. The results suggested that the NIER('99) model obtained by the results according to the apartment floor must be improved and developed on the road traffic noise.

  • Effect and robust detection of targets in infrared images has crucial meaning for many applications, such as infrared guidance, early warning, and video surveillance. However, it is not an easy task due to the special characteristics of the infrared images, in which the background clutters are severe and the targets are weak. The recent literature demonstrates that sparse representation can help handle the detection problem, however, the detection performance should be improved. To this end, in this text, a hybrid method based on local sparse representation and contrast is proposed, which can effectively and robustly detect the infrared targets. First, a residual image is calculated based on local sparse representation for the original image, in which the target can be effectively highlighted. Then, a local contrast based method is adopted to compute the target prediction image, in which the background clutters can be highly suppressed. Subsequently, the residual image and the target prediction image are combined together adaptively so as to accurately and robustly locate the targets. Based on a set of comprehensive experiments, our algorithm has demonstrated better performance than other existing alternatives.

  • A microstructure-based finite element simulation was conducted to predict the plastic strain ratio (R-value) of a dual-phase (DP) steel. The representative volume elements (RVEs) concept was adopted for the image-based FE modeling and a 3D model was constructed using sequential 2D images. Each phase was considered with the von-Mises yield criterion and the Swift model. The Swift parameters were defined by the empirical equations based on the chemical composition. The developed model was applied to analyze the effect of residual stress on the R-value and stress distribution. In order to consider the residual stress development after cold rolling, 10 % compression was applied in the thickness direction and unloaded before the tensile stress was applied in the rolling direction. The results showed a reasonable prediction for the R-value evolution: a sharp increase at small strains was well described and a transition followed in the downward direction. The R-value evolution was analyzed using the stress distribution change on the π-plane
