  • Since prediction processes such as motion estimation motion compensation are not at the WZ video encoder but at its decoder, WZ video compression cannot have better performance than that of conventional video encoder. In order to implement the prediction process with low complexity at the encoder, WZ residual coding was proposed. Instead of original WZ frames, WZ residual coding encodes the residual signal between key frames and WZ frames. Although the proposed WZ residual coding has good performance in pixel domain, it does not have any improvements in transform domain compared to transform domain WZ coding. The WZ residual coding in transform domain is difficult to have better performance, because pre-defined quantization matrices in WZ coding are not compatible with WZ residual coding. In this paper, we propose a new quantization method modifying quantization matrix and quantization step size adaptively for transform domain WZ residual coding. Experimental result shows 22% gain in BDBR and 1.2dB gain in BDPSNR.

  • We propose a method for estimating coefficients of AR (autoregressive) model which named MLPAR (Maximum Likelihood of Pearson system for Auto-Regressive model). In the present method for estimating coefficients of AR model, there is an assumption that residual or error term of the model follows the normal distribution. In common cases, we can observe that the error of AR model does not follow the normal distribution. So the normal assumption will cause decreasing prediction accuracy of AR model. In the paper, we propose the MLPAR which does not assume the normal distribution of error term. The MLPAR estimates coefficients of auto-regressive model and distribution moments of residual by using pearson distribution system and maximum likelihood estimation. Comparing proposed method to auto-regressive model, results are shown to verify improved performance of the MLPAR in terms of prediction accuracy.

  • Deformations of structures due to welding appear much complicated and deformated modes are also complex. As parameters governing deformations are various and effect of parameters on deformations is not well known, precise prediction of deformation due to welding has been a difficult problem. Until now, many research papers as to welding deformation have been published, but the research results can explain only one aspect of welding deformation have been published, but the research results can explain only one aspect of welding deformation and are hard to be used in reasonable prediction of welding deformations in complicated structures. In this study, based on the accumulated results concerning to welding deformations, a practical method to predict complicated welding deformations of large structure is proposed. A simplified model to estimate residual plastic strains is suggested and main parameters affecting residual plastic strains are shown to be heat input and joint restaints. Inherent strain theory and experimental data are combined with the finite element method and welding deformations of large structures are calculated by elastic analysis. Comparison of calculated results with experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of the proposed method.

  • Numerical prediction of welding-induced residual stresses using the finite element method has been a common practice in the development or refinement of welded product designs. Various researchers have studied several thermal models associated with the welding process. Among these thermal models, ramp heat input and double-ellipsoid moving source have been investigated. These heat-source models predict the temperature fields and history with or without accuracy. However, these models can predict the thermal characteristics of the welding process that influence the formation of the inherent plastic strains, which ultimately determines the final state of residual stresses in the weldment. The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses are compared. Although the two models predict similar magnitude of the longitudinal stress, the double-ellipsoid moving source model predicts wider tensile stress zones than the other one. And, both the ramp heating and moving source models predict the stress results in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

  • Estimation of fatigue strength on the spot welded joint is very Important for strength design of spot welded steed sheet structures. In this paper, the effect of residual stress on the fatigue life of resistance spot weldment was studied. Residual stress fields of weldment were calculated by using thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis and equivalent fatigue stress considering residual stress effect was obtained. And then we predicted fatigue life, which included the effect of the residual stresses and the actual loading stresses. The calculation and experimental results were in good agreement. Therefore, the proposed calculated model can be considered to be sufficiently powerful for the prediction of fatigue life.

  • Video compression exploits statistical, spatial, and temporal redundancy, as well as transform and quantization. In particular, the transform in a frequency domain plays a major role in energy compaction of spatial domain data into frequency domain data. The high efficient video coding standard uses the type-II discrete cosine transform (DCT-II) and type-VII discrete sine transform (DST-VII) to improve the coding efficiency of residual data. However, the DST-VII is applied only to the Intra $4{\times}4$ residual block because it yields relatively small gains in the larger block than in the $4{\times}4$ block. In this study, after rearranging the data of the residual block, we apply the DST-VII to the inter-residual block to achieve coding gain. The rearrangement of the residual block data is similar to the arrangement of the basis vector with a the lowest frequency component of the DST-VII. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the luma-chroma (Cb+Cr) BD rates by approximately 0.23% to 0.22%, 0.44% to 0.58%, and 0.46% to 0.65% for the random access, low delay B, and low delay P configurations, respectively.

  • It has been known that out-of-plane deformation in thin plate structure is caused by the angular deformation of welded joint. However, experimental results show that conventional theory based on angular deformation is not appropriate for prediction of out-of-plane deformation in thin plate structure. In this study, large deformation plate theory is introduced to clarify the effect of residual stress on out-of-plane deformation. The results by the proposed method show good agreement with the experimental results.
