  • Metal/intermetallic laminated composites have been manufactured by SHS reactions between Ni and Al elemental metal foils. Microstructure showed that the intermetallic volume fraction was 55%, 45%, 35% in the 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 thickness ratio(Ni:Al) specimen and the main phases of the intermetallic were transformed from $Ni_2Al_3$ to NiAl when the thickness ratio was increased. Tensile strength and elongation were increased when the volume fraction of Ni metallic phase was increased. Under assumptions of isostrain condition, the tensile strength of metal/intermetallic laminated composites didn't obey the ROM due to the thermal residual stress and this was confirmed by X-ray residual stress analysis. Fracture toughness results by the SENB test showed R-curves with upward curvature based on LSB condition. Bridging stress based on LSB condition was determined by the curve fitting analysis, In-situ observed microstructure during fracture test showed that the various bridging mechanism such as crack bridging, crack branching and ductile failure of metallic layer were occurred

  • We investigated the tribological properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films deposited with CrC interlayers of various thicknesses as the adhesive layer. A-C and CrC thin films were deposited using the unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering method with graphite and chromium as the targets. CrC films as the interlayer were fabricated under a-C films, and various structural, surface, and tribological properties of a-C films deposited with various CrC interlayer thicknesses were investigated. With various CrC interlayer thicknesses under a-C films, the tribological properties of CrC/a-C films were improved; the increased film thickness exhibited a maximum high hardness of over 27.5 GPa, high elastic modulus of over 242 GPa, critical load of 31 N, residual stress of 1.85 GPa, and a smooth surface below 0.09 nm at the condition of 30-nm CrC thickness.

  • Si3N4/stainless steel 316 joints with Ni buffer layer were fabricated by direct active brazing method (DIB) using Ag-Cu-Ti brazing alloy only and double brazing method (DOB) using Ag-Cu brazing alloy with Si3N4 pretreated with Ag-Cu-Ti brazing alloy. For the joint brazed by DIB method, Ti was segregated at the Si3N4/brazing alloy interface, but was not enough to form a stable joint interface. In addition, large amounts of Ni-Ti inter-metallic compounds were formed in tehbrazing alloy near the joint interface, which could deplete the contents of Ti involved in the interfacial reaction. However, for the joint brazed by DOB method, segregation of Ti at the joint interface were enough to enhance the formation of stable interfacial reaction products such as TiN and Ti-Si-Ni-N-(Cu) multicompounds, which restricted the formation of Ni-Tio inter-metallic compounds in the brazing alloy during brazing with Ni buffer layer. Fracture strength of Si3N4/S.S 316 joints with Ni buffer layer was much improved by using DOB method rather than DIB method. It could be deduced that the differences of fracture strength of the joint with Ni buffer layer depending on brazing process adapted were directly affected by the formation of stable joint interface and the change in microstructure of the brazing alloy near the joint interface. It was found that fracture strength of Si3N4/S.S 316 joints with Ni buffer layer was gradually reduced as the thickness of interface. It was found that fracture strength of Si3N4/S.S 316 joints with Ni buffer layer was gradually reduced as the thickness of Ni buffer layer in the joint was increased from 0.1 mm to 10 mm. It seems to due to the increased residual stress in the joint as the thickness of Ni buffer layer is increased. The maximum fracture strength of Si3N4/S.S 316 joints with Ni buffer layer was 386 MPa, and the fracture of joint was originated at Si3N4/brazing alloy joint interface and propagated into Si3N4 matrix.

  • Recently, as the industrial structure tends to become large, the thickness of structural plate becomes thicker. Therefore, the thicker the plate of welded structure is, the larger the shape of welded joint. The effect of large heat input makes large heat affected zone(HAZ). These bring to complict welding residual stress and to weaken material, which may cause extremely harm to the safety of structures. Nevertheless, welding is design is regulated by the KS, JIS or standard in the resister of shipping such as KR, ABS or LR. However, these rules are based on rather experimental than theoretical. In this study, the computer program of heat conduction, considering un-steady state and quasi-steady state, is developed for optimizing(minimizing) a shape of welded joint. The characteristics of heat on the welded joints with various shapes are clarified by the results of the analyses.

  • Thermal Barrier Coating with Functional Gradient Materials (FGM-TBC) can play an important role to protect the parts from harmful environments in high temperatures such as oxidation, corrosion, and wear and to improve the efficiency of aircraft engine by lowering the surface temperature on turbine blade. FGM-TBC can increase the life spans of product and improve the operating properties. Therfore, in this study the evaluations of mechanical and thermal properties of FGM-TBC such as fatigue, oxidation and wear-resistance at high temperatures have been conducted. The samples of both the TBC with 2, 3, 5 layers (YSZ/NiCrAlY) to be produced by Air Plasma Spray method (APS) and the bulk TBC with 6 layers to be produced by Plasma Assisted Sintering method (PAS) were used. Furthermore, residual stress, bond strength, and thermal conductivity were evaluated. The average thickness of the APS was 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 600$\mu\textrm{m}$ and the average thickness of the PAS was 3mm. The hardness number of the top layer of APS was 750 Hv to 810Hv and that of PAS was 950 Hv to 1440Hv. The $ZrO_2$ coating layer of APS was composed of tetragonal structure after spraying as the result of XRD analysis. As shown in the results of the high temperature wear test, the 3 layer coating of APS had the best wear resistance at $800^{\circ}C$ and the 5 layer coating of APS had the best wear resistance at $600^{\circ}C$. But, these coatings had the tendency of the low-temperature softening at $300^{\circ}C$. The main mechanism of wear was the adhesive wear and the friction coefficient of coatings was increased as increasing the test temperatures. A s results of thermal conductivity test, the ${\Delta}T$ of the APS coating was increased as number of layer and the range of thermal conductivity of the PAS was $800^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • The research on a thermal stress control layer (TSCL) begins to undertake to reduce residual stress and strain in the vicinity of the joined region between the hardfacing layer and the base part. The goal of this paper is to estimate the material combination and the thickness of TSCL for the Stellite21 hardfaced STD61 hot working tool steel via three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). TSCL is created by the combination of Stellite21 and STD61. The thickness of TSCL ranges from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. The influence of the material combination and the thickness of TSCL on temperature, thermal stress and thermal strain distributions of the hardfaced part have been investigated. The results of the investigation have been revealed that a proper material combination of TSCL is Stellite21 of 50 % and STD61 of 50 %, and its appropriate thickness is 1.0 mm.

  • Creation of plastic deformation under seismic loads, is one of the most serious subjects in RC structures with steel bars which reduces the life threatening risks and increases dissipation of energy. Shape memory alloy (SMA) is one of the best choice for the relocating plastic hinges. In a challenge to study the seismic response of concrete moment resisting frame (MRF), this article investigates numerically a new type of concrete frames with nano fiber reinforced polymer (NFRP) and shape memory alloy (SMA) hinges, simultaneously. The NFRP layer is containing carbon nanofibers with agglomeration based on Mori-Tanaka model. The tangential shear deformation (TASDT) is applied for modelling of the structure and the continuity boundary conditions are used for coupling of the motion equations. In SMA connections between beam and columns, since there is phase transformation, hence, the motion equations of the structure are coupled with kinetic equations of phase transformation. The Hernandez-Lagoudas theory is applied for demonstrating of pseudoelastic characteristics of SMA. The corresponding motion equations are solved by differential cubature (DC) and Newmark methods in order to obtain the peak ground acceleration (PGA) and residual drift ratio for MRF-2%. The main impact of this paper is to present the influences of the volume percent and agglomeration of nanofibers, thickness and length of the concrete frame, SMA material and NFRP layer on the PGA and drift ratio. The numerical results revealed that the with increasing the volume percent of nanofibers, the PGA is enhanced and the residual drift ratio is reduced. It is also worth to mention that PGA of concrete frame with NFRP layer containing 2% nanofibers is approximately equal to the concrete frame with steel bars.

  • Low temperature degradation behavior in yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramics was microscopically observed from the phase contrast between monoclinic surface and tetragonal matrix. The degradation behavior was dependent on the surface treatment of sintered Y-TZP, even if the sintering history is same. In the mirror polished specimen, the monoclinic layer appeared in a uniform thickness from the surface. On the contrary, for the specimen with coarse scratch, the thickness of degraded surface was more than double especially from the coarse scratch. Since the scratch results in local deformation, the residual stress should be induced around the scratch. With the transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic, the volume expansion exerts a stress on a neighboring grains and promotes a successive phase transformation. Such a autocatalytic effect can be triggered from the part of coarse scratch.

  • Arrayed ultrasonic sensors based on the piezoelectric thin film (lead-zirconate-titanate: Pb($Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_{3}$) having composite membrane structure are fabricated. Different thermal and elastic characteristics of each layer generate the residual stress during the high temperature deposition processes, accomplished diaphragm is consequently bowing. We present the membrane deflection effects originated from the residual stress on the resonant frequencies of the sensor chips. The resonant frequencies ($f_r$) measured of each sensor structures are located in the range of $87.6{\sim}111\;kHz$, these are larger $30{\sim}40\;kHz$ than the resultant frequencies of FEM. The primary factors of $f_r$ deviations from the ideal FEM results are the membrane deflections, and the influence of stiffness variations are not so large on that. Membrane deflections have the effect of total thickness increase which sensitively change the $f_r$ to the positive direction. Stress generations of the membrane are also numerically predicted for considering the effect of stiffness variations on the $f_r$.

  • STrained layers and strain depth profile of high dose As ion implanted (100) si wafer annealed at various temperatures have been investigated by means of X-ray double crystal diffractometry (X-ray DCD). The results obtained by x-ray rocking curve analysis showed a defect layer at the original amorphous /crystalline interface of 1400$\AA$ depth. In addition arsenic ion concentrtion profiles and defect distributions in depth were obtained by the SIMS and TRIM -code simulation . the positive strain depth profile determined from the rocking curve analysis were only presented under 0.14 $\mu$m from the surface for samples ananelaed at $600^{\circ}C$. The results was shown that the thickness of amprphous layer is 0.14 $\mu$m indirectry, and it was good agreement with the TRIM -Code simulation. Additionally, it could be thought that the positive strain have been affected residual intersitial atoms under the amorphous/crystalline interface formed by ion implantation.
