Variation of Undrained Shear Behavior with Consolidation Stress Ratio of Nakdong River Sand (압밀응력비에 따른 낙동강모래의 비배수전단거통 특성)

  • This research, in order to study the effects of initial shear stress of anisotropically consolidated sand that has 0.558% fines, performed several undrained static and dynamic triaxial test. To simulate the real field conditions, loose and dense samples were prepared. Besides, the cyclic shear strength of Nakdong River sand under various combinations of initial static shear stress, stress path, pore water pressure and residual strength relationship was studied. By using Bolton's theory, peak internal friction angle at failure which has considerable effects on the relative density and mean effective stress was determined. In p'- q diagram, the phase transformation line moves closer to the failure line as the specimen's initial anistropical consolidation stress increases. Loose sands were more affected than dense sands. The increase of consolidation stress ratio from 1.4 to 1.8 had an effect on liquefaction resistance strength resulting from the increase of relativity density, and showed similar CSR values in dense specimen condition.

  • In patients with fully edentulous maxilla, fabrication of implant-supported overdenture can be a viable treatment option, when a minimum of six implants were strategically placed. Among several attachment systems used for implant-supported overdentures, milled-bars prevent rotational movement of denture, thus showing great stability, and have the advantage of splinting multiple implants with each other. In this case report, a milled-bar supported overdenture was fabricated for a patient suffering from condition of fully edentulous maxilla with severe ridge resorption in the anterior residual ridge. Seven implants composed of three different systems were effectively utilized by CAD/CAM customized abutment and cement-retained milled bar.

  • Solving a system of linear or non-linear equations is required to analyze any kind of structures. There are many ways to solve a system of equations, and they can be classified as implicit and explicit techniques. The explicit methods eliminate round-off errors and use less memory. The dynamic relaxation method (DR) is one of the powerful and simple explicit processes. The important point is that the DR does not require to store the global stiffness matrix, for which it just uses the residual loads vector. In this paper, a new approach to the DR method is expressed. In this approach, the damping, mass and time steps are similar to those of the traditional method of dynamic relaxation. The difference of this proposed method is focused on the method of calculating the damping. The proposed method is expressed such that the time step is constant, damping is equal to zero except in steps with maximum energy and the concentrated damping can be applied to minimize the energy of system in this step. In this condition, the calculation of damping in all steps is not required. Then the volume of computation is reduced. The DR method for form-finding of membrane structures is employed in this paper. The form-finding of the three plans related to the membrane structures with different loading is considered to investigate the efficiency of the proposed method. The numerical results show that the convergence rate based on the proposed method increases in all cases than other methods.

Impact of Prognostic Factors on Survival Rates in Patients with Ovarian Carcinoma

  • Purpose: The aim of the present study was to invesitigate the impact of significant clinico-pathological prognostic factors on survival rates and to identify factors predictive of poor outcome in patients with ovarian carcinoma. Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review of 74 women with pathologically proven ovarian carcinoma who were treated between January 2006 and April 2011 was performed. Patients were investigated with respect to survival to find the possible effects of age, gravida, parity, menstruel condition, pre-operative Ca-125, treatment period, cytologic washings, presence of ascites, tumor histology, stage and grade, maximal tumor diameter, adjuvan chemotherapy and cytoreductive success. Also 55 ovarian carcinoma patients were investigated with respect to prognostic factors for early 2-year survival. Results: The two-year survival rate was 69% and the 5-year survival rate was 25.5% for the whole study population. Significant factors for 2-year survival were preoperative CA-125 level, malignant cytology and FIGO clinical stage. Significant factors for 5-year survival were age, preoperative CA-125 level, residual tumor, lymph node metastases, histologic type of tumor, malignant cytology and FIGO clinical stage. Logistic regression revealed that independent prognostic factors of 5-year survival were patient age, lymph node metastasis and malignant cytology. Conclusions: We consider quality registries with prospectively collected data to be one important tool in monitoring treatment effects in population-based cancer research.

Cell Age Optimization for Hydrogen Production Induced by Sulfur Deprivation Using a Green Alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii UTEX 90

  • Under sulfur deprived conditions, PS II and photosynthetic $O_2$ evolution by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii UTEX 90 are inactivated, resulting in shift from aerobic to anaerobic condition. This is followed by hydrogen production catalyzed by hydrogenase. We hypothesized that the photosynthetic capacity and the accumulation of endogenous substrates such as starch for hydrogen production might be different according to cell age. Accordingly, we investigated (a) the relationships between hydrogen production, induction time of sulfur deprivation, increase of chlorophyll after sulfur deprivation, and residual PS II activity, and (b) the effect of initial cell density upon sulfur deprivation. The maximum production volume of hydrogen was 151 ml $H_2$/l with 0.91 g/l of cell density in the late-exponential phase. We suggest that the effects of induction time and initial cell density at sulfur deprivation on hydrogen production, up to an optimal concentration, are due to an increase of chlorophyll under sulfur deprivation.

  • This paper analyzed GNSS signal acquisition performance of a regional navigation receiver when an interference cancellation capability is applied. Intereference between the regional navigation and GNSS signal can be mitigated by the interference cancellation technique such as the successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm. However signal acquisition performance will be degraded when jamming-to-signal ratio (J/S) is large due to a cross-correlation properties of residual signals. In this paper we analyzed signal acquisition performance degradation due to the interference between the Kasami and GNSS Gold code signal. Monte Carlo simulation is used for the analysis and compared results with those of GNSS Gold code only condition.

Production of Amylase by a Filamentous Fungus, Strain FM04, and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Food Waste (사상균 FM04에 의한 Amylase 생산 및 음식물 쓰레기의 효소학적 가수분해)

  • A filamentous fungus, strain FM04 producing amylase was isolated from rotten yam peels and potatoes. The favorable conditions of cultivation factors such as, temperature, pH, and agitation speed of strain FM04 were 28∼30$^{\circ}C$, 5.0∼6.0, and 100 rpm, respectively. Starch was the best carbon source in the amylase production. Therefore, food wastes containing lots of starch were employed as the carbon source of the cultivation for the economical amylase production. 5.2 U/ml of amylase was obtained In the cultivation using 1 % (w/v) of food wastes. The amylase showed the highest activity at enzyme reaction conditions of 60$^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.5 and showed 90% of residual activity after the reaction at 50$^{\circ}C$ for 2 days. In the enzymatic hydrolysis reaction using 20% (w/v) of food wastes and 2.5 U/ml of amylase, 72.6 g/l of reducing sugar was obtained at the reaction condition of 50$^{\circ}C$, pH 4.5 for 2 days.

Quality Improvement of Low Bitrate HE-AAC using Linear Prediction Pre-processor (저 전송률 환경에서 선형예측 전처리기를 사용한 HE-AAC의 성능 향상)

  • This paper proposes a new method of improving the quality of High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC). HE-AAC encodes input source by allocating bits for each scalefactor bands appropriately according to human ear's psychoacoustic property. As a result, insufficient bits are assigned to the bands which have relatively low energy. This imbalance between different energy bands can cause decreasing of sound quality like musical noise. In the proposed system, a Linear Prediction (LP) module is combined with HE-AAC as a pre-processor to improve sound quality by even bits distribution. To apply accurate human being's psychoacoustic property, the psychoacoustic model uses Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrum of original input signal to make masking threshold. In its implementation, masking threshold of psychoacoustic model is normalized using the LP spectral envelope in prior to quantization of the LP residual. Experimental result shows that, the proposed algorithm allocates bits appropriately for insufficient bits condition and improves the performance of HE-AAC.

  • This paper is concerned with the development, and performance test of LIPCA (Lightweight Piezo-composite Curved Actuator) that is lighter than other conventional piezo-composite type actuators. LIPCA is composed of top fiber composite layers with a high modulus and low CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion), a middle PZT cermaic wafer, and base layers with a high modulus and high CTE. The performance of each actuator was evaluated using an actuator test system consisting of an actuator supporting jig, a high voltage actuating power supplier, and a non-contact laser measuring system. The simply supported condition actuator was excited by the power supplier with 1.0Hz cycle and up to $100\sim400V_{pp}$. The displacement at the center point of actuator was measured with non-contact laser displacement measuring system, It has been shown that the LIPCA-C2 can 34% decrease in mass and 13% increase in displacement compared to THUNDER.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate the condition of the production and the heat resistance of the acid protease by Rhizopus japonicus S-62. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The optimum concentrations of sucrose, yeast, ammonium chloride and sodium phosphate monobasic added to the wheat bran medium in the acid protease production were 0.5%, 2.0%, 0.4%, and 0.4%, respectively. 2) KH$_2$PO$_4$ and NaH$_2$PO$_4$ were the most effective as the heat resistant agents. 3) When the enzyme solutions added with KH$_2$PO$_4$ and NaH$_2$PO$_4$ to the concentration of 2% were heated for 10 min, at 50$^{\circ}C$, their residual activities were 100%, respectively. 4) The heat resistant effects of KH$_2$PO$_4$ and NaH$_2$PO$_4$ were not observed almost above 55$^{\circ}C$.
