As lifestyle changes, the concept of supporting smart home care based on the residential environment is making it possible to build a smart home IoT service design with enhanced accessibility and convenience for medical appointments and well-being lifestyle care. This paper is a study on user-centered health care smart home IoT service design suitable for family members based on the health care, beauty care, exercise care, and customized diet care beyond the conventional concept of health care monitoring. Based on the analysis, this paper proposes a personal care coordinate smart home service design in a human-centered wellness clinic care smart home service design environment. Human-centered wellness clinic smart home IoT service design is meaningful in presenting a vision for research on smart home service design that links hospital-linked and care-linked service industries, which should be considered from the smart home construction planning stage.

  • This study has been performed to explore conveniences and inconveniences of daily lives in rural residential care facilities among the elderly residents. In this study, five males and seven females aged 68 to 78 were asked about socio-familial and physical aspects of their daily lives in the facilities such as meals, social activities, family visits, recreation, and health care. The answers of the qualitative interview were drawn as follow; first, the residents perceived well planned regular meals and snacks, free visits of friends, regularly supervised daily sanitary activities, periodic outdoor activities, education programs provided by religious experts, and pastoral farming lives as most convenient aspects of the retirement facilities. In addition, some felt that facility life made them free of familial conflicts, while others appealed fear of being forgotten because of distant location. On the other hand, they perceived the supervised group activities and meals as major inconveniences. They also felt persistently depressed when closely observing serious illness or deaths of their co-residents. Therefore in this study, suggestions were made as follows: first, combination of normal family life and retirement facility should be developed in the mixed form of community welfare center and shared home. Second, intensive medical care facilities should be in collaboration with the retirement facilities, so that the residents are relieved from stressful contacts with extremely ill patients in the residential area.

  • This study aims to explore the issues of residential care services for children and youth with disabilities using mixed methods research. In Korea, welfare policies for people with disabilities tend to focus on adults with disabilities. As a result, children and youth with disabilities often receive less attention in welfare policies, which is especially true of children and youth with disabilities at residential facilities, who have confronted more serious situations than children and youth with disabilities living together with their families. Thus, the goal of this study explores the issues of residential care services for children and youth with disabilities, and suggests alternatives grounded in the research results. This study used a mixed methodology; in particular the embedded design that is designed by Creswell and Clark(2007). In qualitative research, representative professionals who work at residential facilities were selected using the recommendations of professional groups, and were interviewed using focus group interview methods. In quantitative research, this study investigated the thoughts of professionals on the issues of residential care services for children and youth with disabilities, using questions that were developed through qualitative research results. This study is significant in that it explored the issues of residential care services for children and youth with disabilities, focusing on field experiences, for the first time in Korea, and suggested political alternatives for the future.

The purpose of this study is to carefully understand characteristics and experiences of only a few academically talented children in residential care and to find out the practical suggestion to support the academic performance of children in residential care. For this purpose, we had interviewed eight children in depth and analyzed the data using a qualitative case study method. As a result, we found a total of 21 subcategories and 5 categories. The categories included that 'always being faithful despite being not fast', 'believing myself when I face limitations', 'conflict in high support and high expectation', 'sometimes refusing to support on me, but I am leaning on my mind', 'relieving anxiety by studying'. In conclusion, we found that the central theme of 'running to change prejudice into hope' were found through the cases with excellent academic achievement. Based on the results, we suggested the guidelines to consider when developing and providing the academic support services for children in residential care.

  • This study was to investigate the effects of percussion program on depression and self-esteem for the elderly lived in residential care. 12 older adults participated in the 40-min. percussion program for 4 weeks(10 sessions). The percussion program consisted of three steps; 1) introduction for creating rapport and relationship, 2) process for mood induction and increasing interaction, and ending for increasing self-achievement and confirming the changed mood. Korean Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS) and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) were administered before the first session and after the completion of the program. Results showed statistical significance (p<.05) in KGDS (p=.020) and SES (p=.025). Findings imply that percussion program can induce positive changes in depression and self-esteem for elderly in the residential care, and more depressed elderly group may have better outcome in percussion playing. Future studies should consider various levels of depression among elderly, and design the program to be more sensitive to the level of functioning.

  • This study has been performed to explore main reasons for staying in paid elderly residential care facilities among the residents. In this study, five males and seven females aged 65 to 82 were asked about main reasons for staying in the facilities. The answers of the qualitative interview were drawn as follows; first, some residents had suddenly decided to move into the facility due to critical life events such as bereavement, serious illness, or supporting problems. Second, some residents had taken a long period of considerations on whether staying home or in the facilities, because their health and family supports gradually diminished over the long life span. On the other hand, a few of them voluntarily chose to stay at the facilities, because they recognized supervised group activities, nutritionally well-planned meals, and health care as major inconveniences. In this study, suggestions were made as follows: first, guiding and settlement programs should be developed for the residents of the sudden events, particularly at early stage of admission. Second, intensive nursing care units should be in separation from healthy independent groups, so that the residents are relieved from stressful contacts with extremely ill patients in the residential area.
