Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is used to generate ICA filter for computing feature vector for image window. Filters that have high discrimination power are selected to classify image from these ICA filters. Proposed classification algorithm is based on probability distribution of feature vector.
Feature enhancement combined with some pattern recognition techiques were applied to the Remote Sensing Data for geological mapping with particular emphasis on non-me-tallic ore deposits and their related geologies. The area chosen is north of Ulsan, the size of which is about 400km$^2$. The geology of the area consists mainly of volcanics, volcanic sediments and clastic sediments of Miocene age, underlain by the Kyungsang sediments of Cretaceous age. The mineralization occurs in tuffs or along the bedding plane of tuffaceous sediments, the main products of which are Kaolinite and Bentonite. The outcrops or mine dumps in the study area were most effectively extracted on the histrogram normalized image of TM Band 1 and 2, due to their high reflectivity. These may be confused with some artificial features, like slate roof complex of the poultry farm or cement ground, which should be classified by field checking. Detailed examination of enhancment image combined with pattern recognition techniques made enable to classify different rocks and thereby extract volcanic products which are mainly related to non-metallic ore deposits in the study area.
Image segmentation and supervised classification techniques are widely used to monitor the ground surface using high-resolution remote sensing images. In order to classify various objects, a process of defining a class corresponding to each object and selecting samples belonging to each class is required. Existing methods for extracting class samples should select a sufficient number of samples having similar intensity characteristics for each class. This process depends on the user's visual identification and takes a lot of time. Representative samples of the class extracted are likely to vary depending on the user, and as a result, the classification performance is greatly affected by the class sample extraction result. In this study, we propose an image classification technique that minimizes user intervention when extracting class samples by applying the histogram back-projection technique and has consistent intensity characteristics of samples belonging to classes. The proposed classification technique using histogram back-projection showed improved classification accuracy in both the experiment using hue subchannels of the hue saturation value transformed image from Compact Advanced Satellite 500-1 imagery and the experiment using the original image compared to the technique that did not use histogram back-projection.
In this paper, we have designed and implemented cluttering classification systems- unsupervised classifiers-for the processing of satellite remote sensing images. Implemented systems adopt various design patterns which include a factory pattern and a strategy pattern to support various satellite images'formats and to design compatible systems. The clustering systems consist of sequential clustering, K-Means clustering, ISODATA clustering and Fuzzy C-Means clustering classifiers. The systems are tested by using a Landsat TM satellite image for the classification input. As results, these clustering systems are well designed to extract sample data for the classification of satellite images of which there is no previous knowledge. The systems can be provided with real-time base clustering tools, compatibilities and components' reusabilities as well.
This research presents particulate distribution map of tidal flats of Hampyung bay using reflectance which extracted from satellite data and field survey data during same periods. The spectrum of particulate composition obtained from Landsat TM data was analysed and 7 scenes of satellite image were classified with ISODATA and K-MEANS methods. The results of unsupervised classification were estimated with in-situ data. The classification accuracy of ISODATA and K-MAMS methods were 84.3% and 85.7%. For validation of classified results of multi-temporal satellite images, TM image of May 1999(reference data), which was classified with field survey data was compared with classified results of multi-temporary satellite data.
Wetlands are lands with a mixture of water, herbaceous or woody vegetation and wet soil. And linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) is one of the most often used methods in handling the spectral mixture problem. This study aims to test LSMA is an enhanced routine for classification of wetland land-covers in Paldang reservoir and vicinity (paldang Reservoir) using Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery. In the LSMA process, reference endmembers were driven from scatter-plots of Landsat bands 3, 4 and 5, and a series of endmember models were developed based on green vegetation (GV), soil and water endmembers which are the main indicators of wetlands. To consider phenological characteristics of Paldang Reservoir, a soil endmember was subdivided into bright and dark soil endmembers in spring and a green vegetation (GV) endmember was subdivided into GV tree and GV herbaceous endmembers in fall. We found that LSMA fractions improved the classification accuracy of the wetland land-cover. Four endmember models provided better GV and soil discrimination and the root mean squared (RMS) errors were 0.011 and 0.0039, in spring and fall respectively. Phenologically, a fall image is more appropriate to classify wetland land-cover than spring's. The classification result using 4 endmember fractions of a fall image reached 85.2 and 74.2 percent of the producer's and user's accuracy respectively. This study shows that this routine will be an useful tool for identifying and monitoring the status of wetlands in Paldang Reservoir.
Although the need of crop production has increased in Mongolia, crop cultivation is very limited because of the harsh climatic and topographic conditions. Crop lands are sparsely distributed with relatively small sizes and, therefore, it is difficult to survey the exact area of crop lands. The study aimed to find an easy and effective way of accurate classification to map crop lands in Mongolia using satellite images. To classify the crop lands over the study area in northern Mongolia, four classifications were carried out by using 1) Thematic Mapper (TM) image August 23, 2) TM image of July 6, 3) combined 12 bands of TM images of July and August, and 4) both TM images of July and August by layered classification. Wheat and potato are the major crop types and they show relatively high variation in crop conditions between July and August. On the other hands, other land cover types (forest, riparian vegetation, grassland, water and bare soil) do not show such difference between July and August. The results of four classifications clearly show that the use of multi-temporal images is essential to accurately classify the crop lands. The layered classification method, in which each class is separated by a subset of TM images, shows the highest classification accuracy (93.7%) of the crop lands. The classification accuracies are lower when we use only a single TM image of either July or August. Because of the different planting practice of potato and the growth condition of wheat, the spectral characteristics of potato and wheat cannot be fully separated from other cover types with TM image of either July or August. Further refinements on the spatial characteristics of existing crop lands may enhance the crop mapping method in Mongolia.
The extraction of earthquake damage from remote sensed imagery requires high spatial resolution and temporal effectiveness of acquisition of imagery. The analog photographs and visual interpretation were taken traditionally. Now it is possible to acquire damage information from many commercial high resolution RS satellites. The key techniques are processing velocity and precision. The authors developed the automatic / semiautomatic image process techniques including feature enhancement, and classification, designed the emergency Earthquake Damage and Losses Evaluate System based on Remote Sensing (RSEDLES). The paper introduced the functions of RSEDLES as well as its application to the earthquakes occurred recently.
This paper makes an effort to compare the recently evolved soft classification method based on Linear Spectral Mixture Modeling (LSMM) with the traditional hard classification methods based on Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis (ISODATA) and Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) algorithms in order to achieve appropriate results for mapping, monitoring and preserving valuable coastal wetland ecosystems of southern India using Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) 1C/1D LISS-III and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image data. ISODATA and MLC methods were attempted on these satellite image data to produce maps of 5, 10, 15 and 20 wetland classes for each of three contrast coastal wetland sites, Pitchavaram, Vedaranniyam and Rameswaram. The accuracy of the derived classes was assessed with the simplest descriptive statistic technique called overall accuracy and a discrete multivariate technique called KAPPA accuracy. ISODATA classification resulted in maps with poor accuracy compared to MLC classification that produced maps with improved accuracy. However, there was a systematic decrease in overall accuracy and KAPPA accuracy, when more number of classes was derived from IRS-1C/1D and Landsat-5 TM imagery by ISODATA and MLC. There were two principal factors for the decreased classification accuracy, namely spectral overlapping/confusion and inadequate spatial resolution of the sensors. Compared to the former, the limited instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of these sensors caused occurrence of number of mixture pixels (mixels) in the image and its effect on the classification process was a major problem to deriving accurate wetland cover types, in spite of the increasing spatial resolution of new generation Earth Observation Sensors (EOS). In order to improve the classification accuracy, a soft classification method based on Linear Spectral Mixture Modeling (LSMM) was described to calculate the spectral mixture and classify IRS-1C/1D LISS-III and Landsat-5 TM Imagery. This method considered number of reflectance end-members that form the scene spectra, followed by the determination of their nature and finally the decomposition of the spectra into their endmembers. To evaluate the LSMM areal estimates, resulted fractional end-members were compared with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), ground truth data, as well as those estimates derived from the traditional hard classifier (MLC). The findings revealed that NDVI values and vegetation fractions were positively correlated ($r^2$= 0.96, 0.95 and 0.92 for Rameswaram, Vedaranniyam and Pitchavaram respectively) and NDVI and soil fraction values were negatively correlated ($r^2$ =0.53, 0.39 and 0.13), indicating the reliability of the sub-pixel classification. Comparing with ground truth data, the precision of LSMM for deriving moisture fraction was 92% and 96% for soil fraction. The LSMM in general would seem well suited to locating small wetland habitats which occurred as sub-pixel inclusions, and to representing continuous gradations between different habitat types.
This paper proposes classification of multi-spectral satellite image based on fusion of fuzzy G-K (Gustafson-Kessel) algorithm and PCM algorithm. The suggested algorithm establishes the initial cluster centers by selecting training data from each category, and then executes the fuzzy G-K algorithm. PCM algorithm perform using classification result of the fuzzy G-K algorithm. The classification categories are allocated to the corresponding category when the results of classification by fuzzy G-K algorithm and PCM algorithm belong to the same category. If the classification result of two algorithms belongs to the different category, the pixels are allocated by Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm. Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm uses the data from the interior of the average intracluster distance. The information of the pixels within the average intracluster distance has a positive normal distribution. It improves classification result by giving a positive effect in Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm. The proposed method is applied to IKONOS and Landsat TM remote sensing satellite image for the test. As a result, the overall accuracy showed a better outcome than individual Fuzzy G-K algorithm and PCM algorithm or the conventional maximum likelihood classification algorithm.
