  • This study aimed to identify self-worth and self-deprecation trajectories and their associated factors among Korean adolescents. For these purposes, we used latent growth curve modeling involving 2,350 students who participated in the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Major findings are as follows: 1) Adolescents' self-worth and self-deprecation increased with time, but the speed gradually changed to a quadratic function model; and 2) the types of predictors affecting self-worth and self-deprecation were different. Specifically, the factors that affected only self-worth were adolescents' relationship with teachers and household income, and the factors that affected only self-deprecation were presence of disease and parental over interference. Factors affecting both self-worth and self-deprecation were child's sex, parental affection, peer trust, and peer alienation. These results suggest that independent intervention is needed for self-worth and self-deprecation. Furthermore, the results can be an important basis for establishing a more focused intervention strategy when intervening in self-worth and self-deprecation in adolescents.

  • This study aims to interpret the experience of science research in a graduate school laboratory from the perspective of Gilles Deleuze's concepts of "agencement" and "becoming". The research was conducted as an autobiographical narrative inquiry. The research text is written in a way that tells the story of my science research experience and retells it from the perspective of Gilles Deleuze. In Deleuze's view, science research is a constantly flowing agencement. The science research agencement is composed of a mechanical agencement of various experimental tools-machines and researcher-machines as well as a collective agencement of speech acts such as biological knowledge, experiment protocols, and laboratory rules. Furthermore, science research agencement is fluid as events occur all over the agencement. Data, as a change occurring in the material dimension, is an event and sign that raises problems. It has the agency to influence agencement through an intersubjective relationship with researchers, and the meaning of data is generated in this process. The change of agencement compelled me to perform science practice. I have performed repeated science practice, meaning that my body has constantly been connected to other machines. As a result of this connection, my body has been affected, and the capacity of my body that constitutes the agencement has been augmented. In addition, I was able to be deterritorialized from the existing science research agencement and reterritorialized in a new science research agencement with data. This process of differentiation allowed me to becoming-scientist. In sum, this study provides implications for science practice-oriented education by exploring the process of becoming-scientist based on my science research experience.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the structural relationship among students' grit, interest, self-regulation ability, task-commitment and achievement within science learning. Our concern is understanding how grit is related to the other non-cognitive variables, i.e., interest, self-regulation ability, and task-commitment, which are widely known as significant predictors of science achievement. Based on literature review, we evaluated two hypothetical models in the frame of structural equation modeling as follows: first, grit was assumed to mediate relations of interest and self-regulation ability, and interest and task-commitment. Second, grit was assumed to have a direct effect on self-regulation ability and task-commitment independent of interest. In both models, grit was assumed to be indirectly associated with science achievement. A total number of 180 high school students (77 boys, 103 girls) participated in surveys on grit, interest, self-regulation ability, and task-commitment and reported their science test scores on mid-term/final exams. Results revealed that students' grit and interest were indirectly associated with their science achievement with the mediation of their self-regulation and task-commitment. We also found that task-commitment was highly correlated with interest and self-regulation. Furthermore, we found different patterns of correlations within the five variables between female and male students. From these results, we suggested that researchers need to investigate whether students' grit and task-commitment can explain their interest decreasing as they move to higher grade levels, how teachers can help students to maintain their interest in learning science from early childhood, and relationships of these non-cognitive variables and science achievement.

  • This study compared the perceptions of children and their mothers of the effects of school lunch programs on the children's dietary behaviors in elementary schools. Questionnaires were answered by 425 elementary school students and their 412 mothers in the Busan area. The results indicated: The school lunch program had positive effects on children's dietary behaviors such as understanding healthy meals, correcting unbalanced diets, snack intake, attitude toward the meal, table manners, and table hygiene. However, there were still some negative habits in the home related to snack time, reading books or watching television during mealtime, eating foods before seniors have started. The gender of the children and whether the mothers worked or not produced no significant differences (in most cases). Still mothers more positively perceived the effect of school lunch programs on their children's dietary behaviors than did the children themselves. Thus, the school lunch program had positive effects for a balanced diet and making good eating habits. And, therefore, teachers-as well as the dieticians- should actively regard the school lunch program as an educational activity which can produce positive effects for a balanced diet, and make every endeavor to strengthen their relationship with the home.

  • A simple experimental method was developed to help students understand the effect of the Coriolis force on typhoon genesis and movement. It consists of rotating tanks with and without a sloping bottom, and a small stirrer to produce cyclonic typhoon-like vortices by locally stirring the water. Vortices were able to last for more than 3 minutes without dissipation in the rotating tank. However, vortices were hardly maintained without rotation, and would rather disappear as soon as the stirrer stopped mixing. Since the dynamical properties of the rotating water are similar to those of the atmosphere influenced by the Coriolis force, the experiments show that the Coriolis force is indispensable to the typhoon genesis. When the tank had both the sloping bottom and rotation, vortices would move in a particular direction. Considering the topographical beta effect, this result indicates that typhoons are drifted not only by the steering wind but also by the meridional gradient of the Coriolis force. The methodology developed in this study, would be useful for both students and teachers to better the relationship between the Coriolis force and the typhoon genesis.

  • Since the Gifted and Talented Education Promotion Law was enacted 15 years ago, in Korea, gifted education in Korea has continued rapid and quantitative growth. The number of gifted classes or institutes for the gifted have increased, as well as the number of gifted education teachers increasing their participation in professional development training and educational activities. However after 2014, gifted education is somewhat shrinking. Due to the controversy of private education and expansion of social welfare in Korea, administrative and financial support for gifted education is being reduced. This study reviewed the gifted education policies promoted by successive governments and analyzed the relationship between politics and support for gifted education efforts by the government. In addition, the phenomenon of the recently shrinking gifted education in Korean society was analyzed in various aspects. These aspects include: decreasing quantitative growth due to the weakening of administrative and financial support from central and local governments on gifted education, regulations on suppressing private education, social inequality to gifted education access, and lack of solidarity in the gifted education scholastic community. Based on this analysis of gifted phenomenon, ways of developing the ideological and practical aspects of future-oriented gifted education were suggested. In the ideological dimension, it was emphasized that gifted education must move away from insularity and the adhesive perspective of Korean society on the concept of giftedness, the concept of intelligence and the recognition of the legitimacy of gifted education. On the other hand, in the practical dimension, the following points were identified: the collection of empirical data on the economic impact of gifted education, gifted education amendment of the statutes, adaptation of the gifted education program with gifted identification, diversification of gifted education service system, and actively promoting new research topics in relation to the Gifted and Talented Education.
