  • The solution of the normal equation arising in a general linear model by the least square methods is not unique in general. Conventionally, SAS IML and G-inverse matrices are considered for such problems. In this paper, we provide a systematic solution procedures for SAS IML.

  • In aqueous mixtures of cationic OTAC (octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) and anionic ADS (ammonium dodecyl sulfate) surfactants, mixed micelles were formed at low (< 0.2 wt %) total surfactant concentrations. For these mixtures mixed micelliza tion and interaction of surfactant molecules were examined. Mixed critical micelle concentration (CMC), thermodynamic potentials of micellization, and minimum area per surfactant molecule at the interface were obtained from surface tensiometry and electrical conductometry. The mixed micellar compositions and the estimation of interacting forces were determined on the basis of a regular solution model. The CMCs were reduced, although not substantial, and synergistic behavior of the ADS and OTAC in the mixed micelles was observed. The CMC reductions in this anionic/cationic system were comparable to those in nonionic/anionic surfactant systems. The interaction parameter $\beta$ of the regular solution model was estimated to be -5 and this negative value of $\beta$ indicated an overall attractive force in the mixed state.

Rich Phase Separation Behavior of Biomolecules

  • Phase separation is a thermodynamic process leading to the formation of compositionally distinct phases. For the past few years, numerous works have shown that biomolecular phase separation serves as biogenesis mechanisms of diverse intracellular condensates, and aberrant phase transitions are associated with disease states such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. Condensates exhibit rich phase behaviors including multiphase internal structuring, noise buffering, and compositional tunability. Recent studies have begun to uncover how a network of intermolecular interactions can give rise to various biophysical features of condensates. Here, we review phase behaviors of biomolecules, particularly with regard to regular solution models of binary and ternary mixtures. We discuss how these theoretical frameworks explain many aspects of the assembly, composition, and miscibility of diverse biomolecular phases, and highlight how a model-based approach can help elucidate the detailed thermodynamic principle for multicomponent intracellular phase separation.

  • This study aims at the phase-field modeling of the phase transformation in graphitization of the cast iron. As the first step, we constructed a phase-field model including the phases with negligible solubility. Under the dilute regular solution approximation, a simplified version of the phase-field model was obtained, which can be used for the phase transformation related with the stoichiometric phases. The results from the numerical calculation of the phase-field model was in good agreement with the exact analytic solution. The compositional shift due to Gibbs-Thomson effect can be reproduced within 0.5% error in the numerical calculation. The interface velocity, whereas, in numerical calculation of phase-field model appeared to be 15% larger than that from the analytic solution. This error is due to the shift of the interface position in phase-field model from the position with ${\phi}=0.5$.

  • This paper addresses a problem of machining route selection in multi-stage process with machine group. This problem is considered the subcontracting and the production in-house such as regular and overtime work. the proposed model is formulated as a 0-1 integer programming constraining the avaliable time of each machine for planning period and total overtimes. The objective of the model is to minimize the sum of processing cost, overtime cost, and subcontracting cost. To solve this model, a genetic algorithm(GA) approach is developed. The effectiveness of the proposed GA approach is evaluated through comparisons with the optimal solution obtained from the branch and bound. In results, the same optimal solution is obtained from two methods at small size problem, and the consistent solution is provided by the GA approach at large size problem. The advantage of the GA approach is the flexibility into decision-making process because of providing multiple machining routes.

Thermodynamic Properties of $NiFe_2O_4-NiFe_2O_4$ Spinel Solid Solution

  • The tie lines delineating ion-exchange equilibria between NiFe2O4-NiCr2O4 spinel solid solution and Fe2O3-Cr2O3 corundum solid solution were determined at 900, 1000, and 1200 ℃ by electron microprobe and energy dispersive X-ray analysis of oxide phases, using the flux growth technique. Activities of the spinel components were calculated from the tie lines, assuming Temkin's ideal mixing in the corundum solid solution. The spinel phase could be expressed by a regular solution with negative deviations from ideality. The Gibbs free energies of mixing for spinel solid solution were discussed in terms of the cation distribution model, based on site preference energies and assuming random mixing on both tetrahedral and octahedral sites.

  • In order to make high purity materials including low contents of interstitial impurities, 70 ㎾ electron beam melter was manufactured. The sponge Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were required and melted by electron beam melter. Based on the experimental results of sponge Ti refining by electron beam melting, the purity of Ti was increased for 180 seconds but thereafter did not significantly vary. In addition, it was found that with number of melting, the purity of Ti did and vary but the yield of Ti was decreased. As a results of Ti refining, high purity Ti of 3N (99.9 wt%) could be obtained including interstitial impurities with total contents of which were maximum 900 ppm. From the experimental results of Ti-6Al-4V alloy electron beam melting, the amounts of Al loss could be estimated through thermodynamic data calculated from the regular solution model and the model of solute removal kinetics and the alloy composition calculated from the models was in accord with the experimental composition of the alloy, It took 10 minutes to make Ti-29Al-4V alloy calculated from the model into Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the composition of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was very homogeneous.

  • The potential for enhancing myocardial protection by adding high-energy phosphate to cardioplegic solutions [St. Thomas Hospital solution] was investigated in a rat heart model of cardiopulmonary bypass and ischemic arrest. Creatine phosphate was evaluated as an additive to the St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegic solution. Creatine phosphate 10.0 mmol/L as the optimal concentration which improved recovery of aortic flow and cardiac output after a 30 minute period of normothermic [37oC] ischemic arrest. In comparing mechanical function in both groups the mean postischemic recoveries of aortic flow, cardiac output, stroke volume and stroke work [expressed as a percentage of its preischemic control] were significantly greater in STH-CP group than in CP- free control group. In addition to improving function and decreasing CK release, CP reduced reperfusion arrhythmias significantly decreasing the time between cross-clamp removal and return to regular rhythm from 81.8 * 13.9 [sec] in CP-free group to 35.9 * 6.8 [sec] in CP group [P< 0.05] so, exogenous CP exerts potent protective and antiarrhythmic effects when added to the St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegic solution. However, the mechanism of action remains to be elucidated.

  • In this paper, the employment planning model is developed which is a decision-making model for determining the optimum employment level with respect to varying net manpower requirement for each planing period such that total cost in a planning horizon is minimized. It is constructed as a nonlinear programming model and a dynamic programming model on the basis of studies in the areas of production smoothing and manpower scheduling. Costs for a planning period are categorized into regular wage cost, hiring cost, and overtime cost. The first is a linear function. The other two cost functions are of quadratic nature. The planning horizon of this planning model is intermediate range (five years) for which a fair planning accuracy can be guaranteed. The model considers learning period for each job class. It is simple and an optimum solution can be easily obtained by direct search techniques.

Prediction of Longshore Current with Set-up/down Effect on a Plane Beach (일정경사 수심단면에서 평균수위의 상승/저하 효과를 고려한 해빈류의 예측)

  • The numerical model for prediction of longshore current with set-up/down effect on a plane beach is developed using the longshore component of the depth-integrated momentum balance equation. To predict the longshore current, the wave height model should first be formulated because the longshore current depends on the wave height directly. Two wave model, regular wave model and random wave model, are developed based on the energy flux balance equation. Also, the numerical model estimating the set-up inside the shoreline is developed using both the on-offshore momentum equation and the moving boundary technique. The numerical models are verified by the analytical solution, and compared with laboratory data. It is found from the comparison that developed models may be predicted accurately the longshore current with set-up/down effect on a plane beach.
