A Study on the Regional Geography in Germany before 1945 (근대 독일 지역지리학의 성립과 발달과정)

  • Since the 1980s, the academic interests on the regional geography have been renewed. This trend is usually called 'Renaissance' of the regional geography. Given this context, to explore diverse theories and methodologies in the regional geography is of much significance. Particularly, to examine the regional geography in Germany widens the understanding of not only the history, strength, and weakness of the regional geography, but also the discipline's status in the field of geography. This paper discusses the regional geography in Germany before World War II, focusing on varieties of theories and methods as well as the historical trajectory of the German regional geography. This discussion may well be significant in that 'Laenderkunde' became an important paradigm in the discipline of geography in Germany during the pre-World War II period.

  • The aim of this Study is to suggest regional learning methods using Landsat ETM and IKONOS images in the 7th Social Studies Curriculum in high school. In the program of 10 grade social studies, curriculum is constructed on the focus of conceptual learning, excluded in practice and activities on the regional learning. Regional learning, which is to goal understanding of regional environments and establishment of identities, is an essential part in student's field work and investigation activities, but with difficulties in application of schooling in the present curriculum, intended to propose substitute methods with satellite images. This study suggests learning methods for perception of region with the resolution of satellite images. The results of the study may help to extend learning and interests on the geography with practical application to GIS and RS.

  • The regional innovation policies so far have been separated from the social problems facing the local communities. The regional innovation policies, regarding the region as the location of the business, have focused on the invigoration of business innovation activities. However, as the recent emergence of the new paradigm of innovation policy aiming the sustainability, 'transformative innovation policy,' has led to a search for regional innovation policies that begin with solving the local social problems. This research paper deals with regional innovation theory that starts from searching for solutions and system transformation for social problems such as climate crisis and energy problems. The objective is to present a new framework called 'transformative regional innovation policy' and to improve its content through case studies by combining the results of the transformative innovation policy and the regional innovation policy studies. In particular, the contribution of this paper is to analyze and discuss the concept of the transition platform, which aims to solve the local social problems, through the case studies of Gussing, Austria and Esbjerg, Denmark. Lastly, it discusses the derived implications of the cases applied in Korean society.

A Study on the Analysis of Regional Disparity and Competitiveness on Employment in Korea (지역 간 고용격차와 고용경쟁력 분석에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to recognize the regional disparity of employment and to analyse the regional current states and characteristics using the evaluation criteria for employment competitiveness. Firstly, it has revealed that the regional disparity of employment is deepening and disparity from the quality side and stability side are more serious. Secondly, the strongest regional employment competitiveness was found to be Chungnam, followed by Seoul, Ulsan, Gyeongbuk, Daejeon and the region of employment risky is Busan. Lastly, it has analysed that the most influencing factors on employment competitiveness are criteria of stability sector. Therefore, we should make efforts to create jobs of good quality and stable, in order to reduce regional disparity and strengthen the competitiveness of employment. And especially region of employment risky must require continuous monitoring.

The Trend of Regional Geography in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s ($1920{\sim}1930$년대(年代) 독일(獨逸) 지지학(地誌學)의 연구(硏究) 동향(動向))

  • The regional geography had been at the height of prosperity in the first half of the twentieth century since Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter. The geography remained stationary in the late 19th century had greatly developed around the regional geography in European countries since the early 20th century. Particularly, A. Hettner and O. $Schl{\ddot{u}}ter$ in Germany, Vidal de la Blache in France and A. J. Herbertson in Britain developed their own methods of regional studies and produced many results of empirical studies ; accordingly the regional geography had been at the height of prosperity in the 1920s and 1930s. This paper aims to study the regional concepts and the methods of regional studies of Germany geographers in the 1920s and 1930s. This study is useful to understand the current methods of classifications of regions and descripitive systems of regions. The noteworthy results of studies are summarized as follows : First, The regional geography of Germany had been developed by Hettner who regarded the geography as the chorological science of the earth's surface, $Schl{\ddot{u}}ter$ who did the geography as the study of cultural landscape and Penck's students, the morphologists of landscape (Landschaftsmorphologie). Hettner defined the geography as the chorological science, maintained that the earth's surface was classify according to its localized difference -continents, lands, districts and localities(Erdteile, $L{\ddot{a}}nder$, Landschaften und Ortlichkeiten) and emphasized on the total character of areas. He tried to classify downward from continents to localities based on the sizes of regions. He also gave the logic of causal relation to schematic approach(Das $L{\ddot{a}}nderkundliche$ Schema) and further developed it. $Schl{\ddot{u}}ter$ argued that The process of change on the landscape through time must be studied. And Passarge and Penck's pupils, morphologists of landscape, tried to classify the landscape synthetically. Thereafter, De Geer and $Gran{\ddot{o}}$ employed the creative methods of regional classification which used signs and simbols. Second, The regional geography of Germany differed from that of France on the next points ; 1. The former was analytic, but the latter was synthetic. 2. The former placed great emphasis on physical elements, terrain and climate etc., but the latter did great emphasis on both physical and human elements. 3. The former gave priority to the studies of large scale regions, but the latter did priority to the studies of small scale regions. In 1920s and 1930s the regional study of Germany geographers exerted direct influence on the development of geography of Japan. Especially, Tanaka Keiji, Japanese typical regional geographer, tried to classify Japan synthetically on the bases of terrain, climate, vegetation and human elements under the influence of European geographers. He exerted great influence on both Japanese and Korean geographers at that time.

The Evolution of Regional Geography in France (프랑스 지역지리연구의 전개과정)

  • Modern geography in France since the end of 19th century was begun with regional geography. France after losing the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 had tried to regain the deteriorated national proudness through the colonial expansion. The social and historical contexts in France had encouraged French geographers to engage in detailed small area studies. In particular, after Blache became a faculty at Sorbonne University his idea on integrative rather than selective description on area studies had gained paradigmatic popularity not only in geography but in other disciplines. The regional geography tradition was then firmly established as a science and as an art by Vidalian school until the beginning of Second World War. However, when industrialization and urbanization were the dominant science since the 1950s spatial analytic geography has become popular research tradition replacing the previledged regional geography. Nevertheless, geography in France is still acknowledged as an interesting and valuable discipline since regional geography tradition had accumulated rich knowledges on various regions. As regional geography provides valuable information and helps to understand various world regions, it should be regenerated as a research tradition which are able to fulfill societal needs accruing nowadays. By doing this, geography can rectify its disciplinary identity which has been disintegrated internally by giving too much emphasis on specialties, and melding into nearby disciplines. Our geography education for the chorography in particular focuses mainly on the listings of simple geographic facts, in this regard. Rather than attracting students' concern and motivation, geography is considered as a subject oriented toward simply memorizing geographic facts. To overcome these problems, regional geography should be discussed openly and popularized in research. Regional geographic methods available and results produced in other countries should be introduced, and critical assessments should be made for selective acknowledgment for nurturing our regional geography.

  • Generally, Web Based Instruction has been deployed through whole studies, but the characteristic that is suit various WBI materials to a course of study is a important problem of instructional practice and it also has not to overlook. Therefore, Today's problem that is application of learning materials about the regional autonomy for Web Based Instruction, A plan that it can be solved in the social studies is propelling in this paper. Each of the whole country's region, the learning about the regional autonomy with centering around text, it is a text book, 'Social Investigation', that is developed specially is teaching until now, but developmental model of learning materials about the regional autonomy for Web Based Instruction is proposed by the efforts for improve this problem. Various learning materials about the regional autonomy for Web Based Instruction applied to learn our regional cultural life through the school homepage with based on this proposal. As a result of this study, By sloughing off old sensibility with centering around text, Student's Ability of self directed learning and solving problem is expanded with the dynamic multimedia regional Webpage's environment
