The industrial community in a metropolis has played an essential role to keep business in a large city. This paper aims to analyze the realities of trade network among enterprises at Buksungro Tools Commercial Cooperative in Daegu. The urban style industrial community is found at Buksungro in Daegu. There are more than one hundred small-sized enterprises. Major trades among enterprises are occurred within and/or by the area. The long-term trade networks within the Buksungro Tools Commercial Cooperative have played the key role to maintain the industrial community. The trade relationship has depended on business networks based on social capital rather than commercial mechanism. The trade networks have been established through credit transactions as well as handling troublesome orders. The trade networks help to transfer technology and to learn the tacit knowledge among firms. The long-term trade networks are more influenced by the social accessibility than spatial accessibility.

This paper is to consider trends and issues of regional research in major sub-fields of human geography in Korea, following the previous one which dealt with contexts and general trends of new regional geography in Korea since the 2000s. They include historical and cultural geography on place and landscape, economic geography on industrial districts or agglomerated regions (i.e. clusters) and urban (and social) geography on urban networks and differentiation. Even though researchers in sub-fields have used different terms and concepts to identify region, they are in common to relate specificities of region to general processes such as (de)modernization, (de)industrialization, and globalization, to understand region as social and discursive constitution as well as substantive reality, and to give more attention to socio-spatial networks and relationality than territoriality of regions. These common points seem to reflect the emerging trend of new regional geography, and to get rid of existing traditional concept of region. It is suggested that major tasks for conceptualization of region in future research are to overcome dichotomy of speciality and generality, of substantive reality and discursive constitution, and of territoriality and relationality, and that important issues for empirical research on region include regional synthesis from new perspectives, uneven regional development as relational process in and between regions, and producing practice for alternative regions.
The objective of this article is to explore the economic relationship between China and the surrounding dynamic Asian economies. It delves into China's influence over the Asian economies and whether this relationship is a market-led or de facto symbiosis. The three principal channels of regional integration analyzed in this article are trade, FDI and vertically integrated production networks. They are essentially based on the activities of the private-sector in these economies. China methodically expanded and deepened its economic ties with the regional neighbors. At the present juncture, China's integration with the surrounding Asia is deep. Another issue that this article explores is the so-called China "threat" or "fear" in Asia. It implies that China is crowding out exports of the other Asian economies in the world market place. Also, as China has become the most attractive FDI destination among the developing countries, it is apprehended that China is receiving FDI at the expense of the Asian economies. These concerns were examined by several empirical studies, and the inference is that they are exaggerated. This article concludes that the private-sector business activities in China and other rapidly growing Asian economies were (and are) instrumental in bringing together the production structures and real economies. The result is both convergence and integration among the dynamic Asian economies. Over the years China and its Asian neighbors has developed a close and symbiotic economic relationship and a de facto regional integration.
The word 'urbanity' literally means 'quality or state of being urban' where the criterion of urban economic and civic culture is assumed despite the general celebration of cultural uniqueness of urban centers. The narratives celebrating the uniqueness of urban centers since the ancient past till recent times could not get rid of the broad categorization of the urban models depending on their contextual networks of trade, mobility and culture. This paper attempts to explore whether the urban cultures in South Asia even preceding a global phenomenon like colonialism were actually reflecting an idea of urbanity where the urban culture, including planning and architecture reflected a trans-national model. This paper particularly concentrates on the medieval period when a pattern of urbanity took shape in this subcontinent under the influence of Islam, which could be explained by its particular idea of urban model, cultural exchange and vibrant trade networks.

This study investigated the nature of spatial concentration and dispersion of corporate control within an international system of decision-making centers. It introduces a simplified model of the global evolution of quaternary places. Linked to the national quaternary place model, the proposed model is useful for examinations involving real world situations associated with international corporations. This five stage model emphasizes the importance of the organizational structure of large corporations, industrial networks and the development of information technology. It suggests the dispersion of international quaternary places along with the diversification of corporate control linkages among quaternary centers. A case study for 1974-1991 uses information statistics to identify the current stage of the international quaternary system. The result is in general agreement with major elements of the stage model. This theoretical concept and empirical research contribute to the expansion of quaternary place theory to the global scale in particular, and to the development of location analysis in general.
Although stable and safe drinking water supply to the customers is a basic function of multi-regional water supply systems in Korea, most systems have their vulnerabilities in emergency time due to the branch-type. Application of connections from the other water supply system can provide a solutions for these tentative problems. This paper describes reduction planning of water supply accidents that can minimize a service interruption to customers in multi-regional water supply system by connecting pipe lines between local water supply systems in Mokpo city areas. The result of this study shows that Juam dam multi-regional water supply systems can cover all of the water shortage in southern parts of Jeonnam multi-regional water supply systems by transmitting water through connected pipes between local networks. This can be effective to supply water interactively in various contingencies, when a pipe line accident occurs in southern area of Jeonnam multi-regional water supply systems. On the contrary, southern area of Jeonnam multi-regional water supply systems can cover 99.5 %($62,500m^3/day$) of the water shortage of Juam dam multi-regional water supply systems when service interruptions caused by various pipe accidents occur in the system.

As Asia becomes increasingly integrated economically, opportunity particularly in managing financial flows, as bases to coordinate regional production networks, and as staging points for the penetration of new markets. The paper argues for a path-dependent logic to understanding the efforts of the Singapore State in hosting hub functions. As a city-state without a national economic hinterland, Singapore's response to increasing business costs and regional competition has been to create a set of policies designed to encourage multinational companies to keep administrative control functions in Singapore while moving the more labour and land intensive production functions to nearby Malaysia and Indonesia. An understanding of the competition among cities in the Asia Pacific for hub functions must also take into account corporate strategy within particular industry dynamics. The second half of the paper provides a number of case studies to show this interplay between corporate strategy, industry dynamic and government policy.

A certificate revocation list(CRL) should be distributed quickly to all the vehicles in the network to protect them from malicious users and malfunctioning equipments as well as to increase the overall security and safety of vehicular networks. However, a major challenge is how to distribute CRLs efficiently. In this paper, we propose a novel Regional CRL distribution method based on the vehicle location registration locally to manage vehicle mobility. The method makes Regional CRLs based on the vehicles' location and distributes them, which can reduce CRL size and distribution time efficiently. According to the simulation results, the proposed method's signaling performance of vehicle's registration is enhanced from 22% to 37% compared to the existing Regional CRL distribution method. It's CRL distribution time is also decreased from 37% to 67% compared to the existing Full CRL distribution method.
This paper examines the intra-and inter-regional linkages of public research institutes (PRIs) with various innovation actors in Korea. In spite of the general consensus on the role of PRIs as innovation facilitators as well as creators, the attributes of regional spillover effect of knowledge created by PRIs have not been understood completely. Some argue that PRIs play pivotal role in encouraging intra-regional innovation networks through collective learning process. Others argue that PRIs are not necessarily related to intra-regional knowledge transfer, but play more important role in establishing national and international innovation linkages. This study attempts to figure out the current status of innovation linkages of Korean PRIs and to prove how the internal and external attributes of PRIs influence the development of spatial innovation linkages. Furthermore, it also tries to draw policy implication from empirical analysis results.

This study aims to suggest methods for improving innovation capability in Daegu-Gyeongbuk's mobile industry. Before offering suggestions, it analyzes the characteristics of technological innovation based on the mobile industry's value chain in Daegu-Gyeongbuk in relation to R&D workforce, R&D expenditures, and R&D networks. Support for R&D workforce in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk's mobile industry is concentrated in the mobile device and contents sectors. In addition, it is difficult for companies to finance R&D expenditures because most are SMEs, except for some large enterprises in the mobile device sector. R&D networks are structured mainly inside of companies, and linkages among universities, research institutes, and supporting institutes are weak in all sectors. To strengthen the innovation capability in Daegu-Gyeongbuk's mobile industry, therefore, human resource projects should be dispersed, and financial support should also be spread across value chain sectors rather than concentrated. Aside from this, a place for industry, academia, institutes, and government to build and enhance innovative networks should be created in all sectors.
