Multiple shoot formation was obtained from excised axillary buds of Achyranthes japonica NAKAI cultured on MS media containing various growth regulators such as auxin and cytokinin. The highest average number of shoots was obtained in 1 mg/L NAA and 2 mg/L BA after 6 weeks (25.8 adventitious shoots per node). Although the regeneration rate was less than the former condition, optimal combination for the production of more shoots with a suitable size was 0.5 mg/L NAA and 1 mg/L BA (19.7 adventitious shoots per node). Roots were induced from regenerated shoots after 3 weeks culture, transferred to 1/2 MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/L IBA. Micropropagated plants were successfully transferred to soil.
$Pd/SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ catalysts were prepared for the synthesis of pyridine and ${\beta}$-picoline from acrolein and ammonia. The activity of these catalysts decreased considerably by the formation of deposits on catalyst surface during the reaction. TPR study showed that the deposits were formed by the condensation polymerization of acrolein and ammonia. The conversion and production rate of pyridine and ${\beta}$-picoline decreased with the partial pressure of acrolein. The amount of deposits and the regeneration temperature of spent catalysts increased with the partial pressure of acrolein but they were independent of the concentration of ammonia.
Inadequate keratinized mucosa around dental implants can lead to more plaque accumulation, tissue inflammation, marginal recession and attachment loss. We evaluated the effects of free gingival and extracellular matrix membrane grafts performed to increase the insufficient width of keratinized tissue around dental implants in the posterior mandible. A 47-year-old female patient presented with discomfort due to swelling of the lower right second premolar area. Due to severe destruction of alveolar bone, the tooth was extracted. After 3 months, a guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedure was performed and then a dental implant was placed 6 months later. During the second-stage implant surgery, free gingival grafting was performed to increase the width of the keratinized tissue. After 12 months, a clinical evaluation was performed. A 64-year-old female patient had a missing tooth area of bilateral lower molar region with narrow zone of keratinized gingiva and horizontal alveolar bone loss. Simultaneous implant placement and GBR were performed. Five months after the first-stage implant surgery, a gingival augmentation procedure was performed with an extracellular matrix membrane graft to improve the width of the keratinized tissue in the second-stage implant surgery. After 12 months, a clinical evaluation was performed. In these two clinical cases, 12 months of follow-up, revealed that the increased width of the keratinized tissue and the deepened oral vestibule was well maintained. A patient showed a good oral hygiene status. In conclusion, increased width of keratinized tissue around dental implants could improve oral hygiene and could have positive effects on the long-term stability and survival rate of dental implants. When planning a keratinized tissue augmentation procedure, clinicians should consider patient-reported outcomes.

In bone tissue engineering, polycaprolactone (PCL) is one of the most widely used biomaterials to manufacture scaffolds as a synthetic polymer with biodegradability and biocompatibility. The polymer deposition system (PDS) with four axis heads, which can dispense bio-polymers, has been used in scaffold fabrication for tissue engineering applications. A dual-head deposition technology of PDS is an effective technique to fabricate 3D scaffolds. The electrospinning technology has been widely used to fabricate porous and highly interconnected polymer fibers. Thus, PDS can fabricate nanofiber-combined hybrid scaffolds using fused deposition modeling (FDM) and electrospinning methods. This study aims to fabricate nanofiber-combined scaffolds with uniform nanofibers using PDS. The PCL nanofibers were fabricated and evaluated according to the fabrication process parameters. PCL nanofibers were successfully fabricated when the applied voltage, tip-to-collector distance, flow rate, and solution concentration were 5 kV, 1 cm, 0.1 ml/h, and 8 wt%, respectively. The cell proliferation was evaluated according to the electrospinning time. Scanning electron microscopy was used to acquire images of the cross-sectioned hybrid scaffolds. The cell proliferation test of the PCL and nanofiber-combined hybrid scaffolds was performed using a CCK-8 assay according to the electrospinning time. The result of in-vitro cell proliferation using osteosarcoma MG-63 cells shows that the hybrid scaffold has good potential for bone regeneration.

Although autoclaved autogenous bone reconstruction is one of the established procedures, it may have some problems in bone regeneration and mechanical property. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of more biologic and anatomical reconstruction where allograft is not readily available. From Aug.1991 to Feb. 1996 the authors analyzed 32 cases of reconstruction with autogenous low heat treated bone. Autogenous graft sites were humerus 4, tibia 4, pelvis 9, and 15 femur. Average follow-up period was 23(range;12-51) months. There were 49 graft-host junctional sites. Diaphysis was 22, metaphysis 10, and flat bone 17. Average duration of healing for the 38 united sites was 7 months. Average union time for each anatomical area 8 months in 19 diaphysis, 12 months in 7 metaphysis, and 12.7 months in 12 flat bone(pelvis). Eleven nonunion sites consisted of 3 diaphysis(3/22), 3 metaphysis(3/10), and 5 flat bone(5/17). Complications other than nonunion were local recurrence(4), bone resorption(3), graft fracture(2), osteomyelitis(1), metal failure(2), and wound infection(1). Initial bone quality and stable fixation technique was important for union rate. Plate and screw is a good method for diaphyseal lesion. Metaphyseal and flat bone are weak area for rigid fixation and one stage augmentation with iliac bone graft can be a salvage procedure.
The heat-storage characteristics accompanied by exothermic reaction at the regeneration of $Ca(OH)_2$ in tile heat-storage mode of a chemical heat pump system using a $Ca(OH)_2/CaO$ reversible thermochemical reaction was examined in a lab-scale unit. In this heat-storage mode, the particle bed of CaO could be regenerated by heating the $Ca(OH)_2$ packed bed to the higher temperature at which the equilibrium pressure in the reactor is greater than the water vapor pressure in the condenser. The results are i) the dehydration, thermal decomposition, rate of $Ca(OH)_2$ was higher at the lower part of particle bed than at the upper part, ii) in the reactor, the dehydration was proceeded along radial and axial direction, from inner part to the outer part, which explains heat transfers from the center to wall and from the tenter to lower or upper part of reactor.
Spheroplast cell fusions were performed with Flavimonas oryzihabitans degrading aniline and Pseudomonas sp. degrading 4-chlorobiphenyl to develope the new fusant degrading aniline and 4-CBP and its characters were investigated. F. oryzihabitans was induced to antibiotic marker ($Cm^r$ by NTG treatment for the fusants selection. The results of spheroplast formation and regeneration frequencies of the strains treated with lysozyme-EDTA were 99% and 5.0~6.6%, respectively. Fusion products were treated with 40% (v/v) PEG 6000 and fusion frequency was $3.16{\times}10^{-4} $. The DNA content of fusant, F22 was approximately 2-fold compared with parents. The fusant was stable, and showed the mixed biochemical characteristics of the parent strains. F22 was similar to parent for cell growth pattern and degrading capacity on 5 mM aniline but cell growth rate of F22 was 1.5-fold higher than that of the parent on 10mM aniline. However 4-CBP degrading ability of F22 was slightly lower than that of parental strain.

We have investigated the effects of relatively high concentration of carbachol (CCh), an agonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR), on cardiac automaticity in mouse heart. Action potentials from automatically beating right atria of mice were measured with conventional microelectrodes. When atria were treated with $100{\mu}M$ CCh, atrial beating was immediately arrested and diastolic membrane potential (DMP) was depolarized. After exposure of the atria to CCh for $\~4 min$, action potentials were regenerated. The regenerated action potentials had lower frequency and shorter duration when compared with the control. When atria were pre-exposed to pirenzepine $(1{\mu}M)$, an $M_1$ mAChR antagonist, there was complete inhibition of CCh-induced depolarization of DMP and regeneration of action potentials. Pre-exposure to AFDX-116 (11 ({2-[(diethylamino)-methyl]-1-piperidyl}acetyl)-5, 11-dihydro-6H-pyridol[2,3-b][1,4] benzodiazepine-6-one base, $1{\mu}M$), an $M_2$ mAChR antagonist, failed to block CCh-induced arrest of the beating. However, prolonged exposure to CCh elicited gradual depolarization of DMP and slight acceleration in beating rate. Our data indicate that high concentration of CCh depolarizes membrane potential and recovers right atrial automaticity via $M_1$ mAChR, providing functional evidence for the role of $M_1$ mAChR in the atrial myocytes.

Background: Hair loss related syndromes are increasing due to environmental pollution and stress. Hair care products are mainly prepared by mixing chemicals and natural extracts, such as those obtained from medicinal plants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 70% ethanol extracts from the flowers of Calendula officinalis, fruit body of Phellinus linteus, and the whole plant of Houttuynia cordata on the growth of CCD-986 cells, hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC), and 3T3-L1 cells. Methods and Results: All sample extracts at all concentrations, except for that from P. linteus fruit body at $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, were cytotoxic to CCD-986 cells. However, none of the sample extracts were cytotoxic to HFDPC. The lipid differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells regulates hair regeneration via secretion of platelet derived growth factor. The 70% ethanol extract of H. cordata whole plant promoted hair growth. Adipogenesis rate significantly increased in a treatment concentration-dependent manner. Conclusions: These results suggest that 70% ethanol extracts of C. officinalis flower, P. linteus fruit body and H. cordata could be used for the development of hair care products.
The transport and allocation of photosynthetic assimilate is an important regulatory factor in plant productivity, In order to modify assimilate partitioning in rice, transgenic plants containing a potato sucrose transporter (SuT) gene were developed. Calli derived from rice seeds (Oryza sativa L. cv Dongjin) were cocultured with A. tumefaciens LBA 4404 harboring the SuT gene. Calli were transferred to MS medium supplemented with 50 mg/L hygromycin, 500 mg/L carbenicillin, 2 mg/L kinetin, 0.1 mg/L NAA. After 2 weeks, hygromycin resistant shoots were obtained from the calli on the selection medium. Roots were induced from the putative transgenic shoots on rooting MS medium supplemented with 250 mg/L cabenicillin. Plant regeneration rate from the calli was about 150%. Stable incorporation of the potato SuT gene into rice genomic DNA was confirmed by PCR and Southern blot analysis.
