  • Comparative studies between single- and two-stage refrigeration cycle using propane as a refrigerant have been performed for a vapor recompression refrigeration cycle. PRO/II with PROVISION release 10.2 from AVEVA company was used, and the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state model with Twu's alpha function was selected for the modeling and optimization of the refrigeration cycle for the reliquefaction of BOG coming out from the LPG storage tank. In two-stage refrigeraton cycle, 24.8% of compressor power was reduced compared to that of single-stage refrigeration cycle through the optimization works.

복합형 태양열 가열기의 일일 운전 특성 및 축열 성능에 관한 연구 (A Study on Thermal Storage Performance and Characteristics of Daily Operation of a Hybrid Solar Air-Water Heater)

  • In this study, a thermal storage performance and characteristics of daily operation were investigated when the air and the liquid were heated simultaneously by a hybrid solar air-water heater that can make hot water as well as heated air. The hybrid solar air-water heater is kind of a flat plate solar collector that can make hot water and heated air by installing air channel beneath absorber plate of traditional flat plate solar collector for hot water. As a result of daily operation, maximum water temperature reached in a thermal storage was shown $44^{\circ}C$ on 73kg/h of air mass flow rate and about $40^{\circ}C$ on 176kg/h of air mass flow rate. Thus, the necessity of heating water in thermal storage by operating only liquid side was confirmed when the temperature of liquid in thermal storage is lower than we need. In case of efficiency investigated on daily operation, the thermal efficiency of the liquid side was decreased with increment of the inlet liquid temperature and decrement of the solar radiation, but efficiency of the air side was increased with increment of inlet liquid temperature difference as the traditional solar air heater. Total thermal efficiency of the collector was shown from 65.85% to 78.23% and it was decreased with increment of the inlet liquid temperature and decrement of solar radiation same as the traditional system.

  • In this paper a new type refrigerant liquid subcooling system which adopts ice storage system is proposed. And the cycle characteristicso of a new system was investigated. Since this system subcools a refrigerant in the daytime using the ice storaged by electric power in the night it is high efficiency heat pump system which have the merit of ice storage system and possible to improve the performance of the heat pump. The running to storage the ie was carried out for 10 hours in the night and th evaporating temperature was set on $-5^{\circ}C.$ Subcooling operation stayed as 430^{\circ}C$ subcooling degree and perfomed till the water in the IST(Ice storage tank) was reached $12^{\circ}C$. The experimental result showed that a new system was superior to the existing refrigeration system generally. The total cooling capacity of a new system was about 11% higher than that of the existing refrigeration system. And the COP of a new system was improved by 22% compared to the existing refrigeration system.

  • This paper presents the development of a high efficiency transport refrigeration system for sliced-raw fish transportation. The refrigeration system is equipped with heat storage for reverse cycle-hot gas defrost (the stored heat is used during defrost cycle of the system). System performance and container operating conditions are analyzed during experimental investigation on a $3,225{\times}1,740{\times}1,640\;mm$ full-scale refrigerated container under cooling and defrosting conditions. The prototype system indicates better performance in terms of shorter cooling-down time, shorter defrost time and smaller fluctuations of refrigerated container's temperature.

Food Preservation Technology at Subzero Temperatures: A Review

  • Purpose: Cold storage is the most popular method used to preserve highly perishable foods such as beef and fish. However, at refrigeration temperatures, the shelf life of these foods is limited, and spoilage leads to massive food waste. Moreover, freezing significantly affects the food's properties. Ice crystallization and growth during freezing can cause irreversible textural damage to foods through volumetric expansion, moisture migration induced by osmotic pressure gradients, and concentration of solutes,which can lead to protein denaturation. Methods: Although freezing can preserve perishable foods for months, these disruptive changes decrease the consumer's perception of the food's quality. Therefore, the development and testing of new and improved cold storage technologies is a worthwhile pursuit. Results: The process of maintaining a food product in an unfrozen state below its equilibrium freezing temperature is known as supercooling. As supercooling has been shown to offer a considerable improvement over refrigeration for extending a perishable product's shelf life, implementation of supercooling in households and commercial refrigeration units would help diminish food waste. Conclusions: A commercially viable supercooling unit for all perishable food items is currently being developed and fabricated. Buildup of this technology will provide a meaningful improvement in the cold storage of perishable foods, and will have a significant impact on the refrigeration market as a whole.

냉매 저장방식에 의한 쾌속 냉각장치에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Rapid Cooling System by Refrigerant Storage Method)

  • In the present study, low-temperature low-pressure refrigerant storage method is proposed to achieve higher cooling capacity during a short period of time than that of a compressor in steady operation. Experimental apparatus was designed and set up to analyze the performance of the new-conceptual cooling system. Two reservoirs for sequential storage of refrigerant were used in the cooling system. Several on/off solenoid valves were installed for control of refrigerant flow. From the experimental results, the initial rapid cooling by low temperature low-pressure refrigerant storage method was ascertained for successful operation. This rapid cooling methodology shall be useful for other low-capacity refrigeration system.

CA 저장을 위한 사과의 최적 수확시기 결정 (Determination on the Optimal Harvest Date of Apples for CA Storage)

  • This study was carried out for the establishment of optic harvest date and storage condition of 'Fuji' apple for CA storage. Apples were picked at 10 day intervals from 17 Sept to 27 Oct.. Apples were analyzed for respiration rata, weight flesh firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solid, total sugar, reducing sugar, surface color and thiault value. In 1990, the optimal harvest season could be judged between 17 Oct. and 27 Oct. from the results of respiration rate rise and change of quality properties. Apples harvested on 27 Oct. wert stored at 2$^{\circ}C$ and 90~95% RH in 1%O2 + 3%CO2, 3%O2 + 3%CO2 and air for 9 months. After 9 months of storage, apples kept in CA storages had beater quality than apples kept in refrigeration storage. Especially, apples kept in 1%O2, + 3%CO2 were fumer and more acid than those kept in 3%O2 + 3%CO2 At the sensory evaluations, apples stored in CA were rated higher quality than apples stared refrigeration.

  • The storage stability of the developed Formula of infant foods was investigated. The results are summarized as follows : When formula A and B were stored at room temperature and refrigeration temperature, there was no remarkable changes in consistency. In frozen state, formula A showed more stability in consistency than formula B and formula A could be stored for 6 months without problems due to retrogradation of starch. The heat treatment of both A and B resulted in the increase of a-value, while L-and b-value showed no such change. But from the 4th month at room temperature, and 5th to 6th month at refrigeration appeared an increase in a -value, hence the browning reaction, while frozen samples did not show noticeable changes in surface color. The heat treatment also caused an increase in POV on both formula. The extent of changes in POV during storage varied with storage temperatures and samples.

  • Since cryogens are stored at very low temperatures, the cryogenic storage systems are quite sensitive to heat leaks. Even though the vessel operated under sealed condition with vacuum insulation and reflective coatings are used, the heat leakage into the vessel is still unavoidable. Therefore, this paper concerns with numerical study of self-pressurization used to analysis the optimum design with the variation volume fraction, effect of heat flux and storage pressure of liquid nitrogen. The result shows that as the volume fraction increases, the pressure rise reduces and the relatively at atmosphere pressure is better than the higher one. In addition, higher heat flux leads the pressure rise increases faster than low one. The additional of heat pipe system to reduce the pressure rise rate also has been done. By this comparison, the optimum design for storage umbilical cord blood can be selected.

플라스틱병을 이용한 빙축시스템의 열역학적 성능에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Thermodynamic Performance of Plastic Bottle Ice Storage System)

  • This paper presents an anlaysis on the thermodynamic performance of ice storage system. The primary interest in this work is the exergetic efficiency of the system. The ice storage system considered here is the capsule type system with the waste plastic bottle being used as a capsule. To examine the characteristics of irreversibility production and exergetic efficiency in detail the ice storage system to be analyzed has been separated from the refrigerator in this analysis. The analysis is based on the lumped model with 3 uniform temperatures. The results indicate that 3 dimensionless parameters can describe the exergetic efficiency of the system, from which the characteristics of irreversibilities and the ranges of these parameters to ensure the reasonable performance of the system can be found. Experiments also have been performed to demonstrate the feasibility of such a system. This analysis only shows the performance of ice storage side, with the refrigeration side excluded. However, the results can be interpreted as a total performance if the refrigerator coupled with the ice storage system operatres reversibly.
