  • This study investigated the scour characteristics of artificial reef according to unreinforced and reinforced artificial reefs through laboratory test and numerical analysis. In this study, geogrid was used as a reinforcement of seabed. Three different reinforced areas were selected; one time, three times and five times bottom area of artificial reef. Two-dimensional water channel test was carried out to investigate scour patten of sand and silt grounds. Numerical analysis was also performed to see the velocity vector and scouring patten around artificial reef which was same condition with experiment. The numerical results were in good agreements with the experimental test results. It was found that the geogrid-installed soft ground under artificial reef tends to reduce scour, compared to unreinforced soft ground.

  • This study investigated the dif usion characteristics of Ecklonia cava spores around marine forest reefs. For this purpose, a numerical analysis was conducted using field observations in the target area and an EFDC model. Based on the results of field observations and the EFDC model, Flow-3D was performed on three types of marine forest reefs, mamely triangular pyramid reef, double-dome reef, and ribbed reef, to monitor the movement direction and maximum movement distance for E. cava spores. As a result, the equilaterally triangular pyramid reef and double-domed reef were found to have a maximum settlement of spores of 10 m in the northwestern direction and 6 m in the western direction. The ribbed reef had a maximum settlement of spores at 4m. These results show that consideration of the diffusion characteristics of E. cava spores when the seaweeds are installed can increase the effectiveness of the algae as substrate of adhesion.

  • This study describes the characteristics of accretion and scour around artificial reefs in Korea. The survey for accretion and scour was made at a dice reef set consisting of 137 dice reefs. The volume of a dice reef unit is 8 $m^3$. The reef set was placed on the muddy sand at 21.6 m in November of 1999. Equipment used in the survey includes Side Scan Sonar, Multi Beam Echo Sounder, Sub-Bottom Profiler and water current meter. According to the results, the artificial reefs are heaped up at two to three times (4 m) the height of the dice reef. The maximum current around the artificial reefs was 81.5 cm/sec at the ebb tide and 72.7 cm/sec at the flood tide. Scour around artificial reefs occurs upstream to the flow while accretion is formed at wake zone in the downstream. The height of accretion ranges from 2.4 to 3.0 m. The crest of the accretion is formed at the distance of about 10 m from the edge of the reef. The slope of accretion is formed steeply at the vicinity of the reef which is at right angles to the direction of main current, and grows gently lower with the increased distance from the reef. Scour is continuously caused by upwelling from the reef set and by side currents that flow parallel to side of the accretion. Also, scour takes place on the deposited sediment rather than on the remaining bottom sediments. This means that, once fully formed, the depth of scour gully on both sides to the direction of main current hardly changes.

  • This study monitored a variety of marine communities during monthly or bimonthly censuses from February 1999 to August 2000. The communities investigated included artificial reefs composed of various substrates, which were placed on an area of sandy bottom at 8, 10, and 13m depths in Muronohana, Ikata, Shikoku, Japan. Economically important shell fishes, such as the turban shell and abalone, appeared on the artificial reefs after 1 month of construction. Shell fishes were recorded at levels of five to 20 individuals per reef. A total of 37 species (4 orders, 19 families) were identified during the experimental period. Apagon semilineatus, Trachurus japonicus, Pteragogus sp., and Pterogobius elapoides accumulated over an average of 100 individuals during the study period. Apagon semilineatus, Pteragogus sp., and P. elapoides accumulated over 1,000 individuals on all artificial reefs in May 1999. Trachurus japonicus reached well over 500 individuals in the artificial iron reef during June and July 2000. Higher monthly variation in fish abundance occurred during periods of high temperature, as compared to periods of low temperature between December 1999 and March 2000. More fish were observed in the artificial iron reef than in the artificial concrete reef, because the former offered a broader inner space and the shadows of the roofs served as a shelter for fish.

  • Seabed settlement and erosion sometimes occurr when a artificial reef is installed in soft seabed. Therefore, this study carried out CBR test and water tank settlement test to investigate settlement behavior of artificial reef according to reinforcement characteristics such as reinforced types and reinforced area. Soil types of ground are sand, silt and clay deposits. Three reinforced types were prepared: unreinforced, geogrid and hybrid bamboo mat(HBM) with different reinforced area. Laboratory test results indicated that reinforced artificial reef improved bearing capacity of ground and reduced settlement as reinforced area increased. Especially, reinforced HBM provided more bearing capacity and less settlement than reinforced geogrid.

  • The objective of this study was to monitor and evaluate the schooling characteristics, including the distribution density (volume backscattering strength) and acoustic size (target strength), of commercially valuable species swimming in response to artificial reefs installed at Suyeong Man, Busan, Korea. Fish aggregations at two artificial reef areas and at a nearby natural rocky reef habitat were recorded and analyzed using a 70 kHz split-beam echo sounder and 330 kHz side-scan sonar from August to September, 2006. An underwater CCTV camera system was also used to observe marine organisms in physical contact with and swimming very close to artificial reefs. During the acoustic observations at three reef sites, useful information about schooling characteristics of fish aggregations responding to artificial reefs were obtained, but more trials are needed to confirm significant differences in schooling behavior and geographical distributions in areas containing natural reef structures and artificial reefs.

  • Eighteen species of fish were identified by SCUBA diving observations around experimental artificial reefs at Tongyeong marine ranching area between November 1998 and November 1999. The highest species number of 14 was observed in September while the lowest number of 2 was observed in November. Fishes showed three typical behavioral patterns against the experimental artificial reef.

  • By this time, various shapes and materials are used in Artificial Reef. A function of Artificial Reef is leading of fishes by adhesion of seaweeds, however, this effect was not enough. In this study, porous concrete containing function materials (protein, carbohydrates, and fat etc.) are investigated to maximize leading effect of fishes. For these, the mechanical characteristics of porous concrete are investigated with void contents and function materials. Also, the diffusion of function materials are compared to suggest the suitable content of functional material.

  • This study describes the postinstallation maintenance technology of artificial reefs and their improvement. The maintenance technology of artificial reefs consists of four steps; the investigation of volumes of installed reefs, the removal of fishing gears entangled in reefs, the estimation of reef functions, and the establishment of surveyed results in the data base. The proper understandings of their steps is the key to improve the maintenance technology of artificial reefs.

  • This study describes the optimum size of a reef set in Korean coastal waters. Data were analyzed in relation to the weight and variety of fish species caught with a three-layer gill net. The results did not indicate a significant difference in the mean catch and mean number of fish species among the three different reef sets, 800, 1,600 and 2400 $m^3$.
