Estimating dehalogenation reactivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron by simple colorimetric assay by way of 4-chlorophenol reduction

  • A number of different nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) materials have been prepared and compared depending on the desired properties for the particular application, but different physicochemical properties of this prepared nZVI make it difficult to universally compare and standardize them to the same scale. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate a simple microplate-based colorimetric assay using 4-chlorophenol as an indicator with respect to the remediation of real treatment targets, such as trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), and atrazine. Effect of nickel contents on 4-chlorophenol reduction was successfully investigated by the miniaturized colorimetric assay. In the same manner, the effect of nickel contents on dehalogenation of TCE, TCA, and atrazine was investigated and the pseudo-first-order kinetic constants were compared with the results for 4-chlorophenol. The similar pattern could be observed between 4-chlorophenol reduction obtained by colorimetric assay and TCE, TCA, atrazine reduction obtained by a traditional chromatographic method. The reaction kinetics does not match perfectly, but the degree of reaction can be estimated. Therefore, the colorimetric assay can be a useful and simple screening tool to determine nZVI reactivity toward halogenated organics before it is applied to a particular remediation site.

  • Phosphorus exhibits considerable segregation in steelmaking slag. In order to recover phosphorus from slag to $K_3PO_4$ via molten iron, a carbothermic reaction using microwave heating was suggested recently. The carbothermic reduction of phosphorus from slag to molten iron using microwave heating was carried out at 2073K. However, at this temperature the thermodynamic properties of both slag and molten iron cannot be determined experimentally. Therefore, the computational approach of the so-called CALPHAD method is very useful to understand the transfer of phosphorus from slag to metal and to enhance this reaction. In the present investigation, a theoretical study of the reduction behavior of phosphorus in slag was carried out at much lower temperatures using the recently developed thermodynamic database in the FactSage program. The calculated results showed reasonable accordance with the experimental data; namely, the thermodynamic database could be applied successfully to higher temperature reactions. The current study found that higher temperature and high $SiO_2$ concentration are favorable for the recovery of phosphorus from slag.

황화철에 의한 6가 크롬의 환원에 관한 연구 (A Study of Hexavalent Chromium Reduction by Iron Sulfide)

  • 황화철은 자연 퇴적토와 공극수에서 생물학적 과정이나 무생물학적 과정에 의해서 상당량 생성된다. 본 연구에서는 6가 크롬과 황화철로부터 용해되어 나온 이가 철과 6가 크롬의 반응에 관하여 알아보기 위해 6가 크롬의 초기농도를 다르게 하여 pH 4와 8에서 수용액상과 고체상으로 나누어 실험을 수행하였다. 또한 철산화물인 ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-FeOOH$, $Fe_3O_4$와 0가 철을 이용하여 황화철에 의한 6가 크롬의 제거효율을 비교하였다. 6가 크롬의 제거율은 pH 4일 때가 pH 8일 때 높았으며 이는 낮은 pH에서 황화철로부터 용해되어 나온 이가 철의 양의 pH 4에서 더 많기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 투과전자 현미경(Transmission Electric Microscopy)을 이용한 황화철의 표면 분석을 통하여 고체 표면에 형성된 침전물을 확인하였다. 이는 황화철에 의한 6가 크롬의 환원 작용에 의하여 iron(oxyhyoxide) 침전이 형성된 것으로 판단된다. 황화철은 철 산화물 및 영가 철에 비하여 그 제거능이 월등하며 이는 이가 철과 함께 황화물의 상호작용인 것으로 사료된다.

영가철 및 개질 영가철을 이용한 triclosan의 환원분해 특성 (Reduction Characteristics of Triclosan using Zero-valent Iron and Modified Zero-valent Iron)

  • In this study, the reductive dechlorination of triclosan using zero-valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) and modified zero-valent iron (i.e., acid-washed iron (Aw/Fe) and palladium-coated iron (Pd/Fe)) was experimentally investigated, and the reduction characteristics were evaluated by analyzing the reaction kinetics. Triclosan could be reductively decomposed using zero-valent iron. The degradation rates of triclosan were about 50% and 67% when $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe were used as reductants, respectively, after 8 h of reaction. For the Pd/Fe system, the degradation rate was about 57% after 1 h of reaction. Thus, Pd/Fe exhibited remarkable performance in the reductive degradation of triclosan. Several dechlorinated intermediates were predicted by GC-MS spectrum, and 2-phenoxyphenol was detected as the by-product of the decomposition reaction of triclosan, indicating that reductive dechlorination occurred continuously. As the reaction proceeded, the pH of the solution increased steadily; the pH increase for the Pd/Fe system was smaller than that for the $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe system. Further, zero-order, first-order, and second-order kinetic models were used to analyze the reaction kinetics. The first-order kinetic model was found to be the best with good correlation for the $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe system. However, for the Pd/Fe system, the experimental data were evaluated to be well fitted to the second-order kinetic model. The reaction rate constants (k) were in the order of Pd/Fe > Aw/Fe > $Fe^0$, with the rate constant of Pd/Fe being much higher than that of the other two reductants.

Acid-insoluble Substances in Reduced Iron Powder from Ores

  • X-ray analysis on iron ores and reduced iron powders revealed that the main acid-insoluble substances were hexagonal and tetragonal quartz, another substances were sillimanite, alumina-silicate, an unnamed zeolite, all contained Si and Al. Their particle size was in the range of $3{\sim}7\;{\mu}m$. Statistics analysis showed that the AIC for high-grade magnetite powder was $(0.130{\pm}0.010)%$) during the latest five months. The predicting value for reduced iron powder should be 0.179%. However, the testing value for reduced iron powder was $(0.192{\pm}0.014)%$. The limited difference of 0.013% might imply rare pollution coming from the reduction and milling processes. The most important step for control AIC should be the separation process of iron ore powders.

The Effect of Dietary Phytate Content on Iron Absorption and Status in Young Korean Women

  • This study investigated the effects of dietary phyate reduction on the apparent absorption and biochemical parameters of iron status in young Korean women. Fourteen healthy, young women consumed low and high phytate diets for ten days of each experimental period. Duplicate diet samples, a fasting blood sample on day 9, and complete fecal samples for five consecutive days starting from day 5 of each diet period were collected. The iron content of diet and fecal samples were analyzed to calculate apparent absorption. Serum samples were analyzed for iron, ferritin, transferrin receptor and TIBC; transferrin saturation was also calculated. The apparent absorption of iron tended to increase in the low phytate period (32.51%) compared to the high phytate period (17.91%), but the difference was not significant (p=0.06). Serum ferritin decreased and serum transferrin receptor increased significantly during the low phytate diet although the mean values were within the normal range. Serum iron and transferrin saturation did not change significantly. In conclusion, the results indicated that reducing dietary phytate for ten days negatively affected iron nutritional parameters, but it moderately and positively affected apparent iron absorption in young Korean women. Further research on the long-term effects of a low phytate diet with an adequate iron content for vows Korean women is necessary.

  • This paper presents size reduction of primary iron core for tubular linear induction motor by improved winding configuration. Using one-ampere conductor method, magnetic field analysis of tubular linear induction motor for size reduction is conducted. Size reduction and improvement of air gap flux distribution is achieved by improved winding configuration, and analysis results are verified by finite element analysis (FEA) and experiments.

Distribution of Vital, Environmental Components and Nutrients Migration Over Sedimentary Water Layers

  • Contaminated marine sediment is a secondary pollution source in the coastal areas, which can result in increased nutrients concentrations in the overlying water. We analyzed the nutrients release characteristics into overlying water from sediments and the interaction among benthic circulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, and sulfur were investigated in a preset sediment/water column. Profiles of pH, ORP, sulfur, iron, nitrogen, phosphorus pools were determined in the sediment and three different layers of overlying water. Variety types of sulfur in the sediments plays a significant role on nutrients transfer into overlying water. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction and various sulfur species interaction are predominantly embodied by the enhancing effects of sulfide on nitrogen reduction. Contaminant sediment take on high organic matter, which is decomposed by bacteria, as a result promote bacterial sulfate reduction and generate sulfide in the sediment. The sulfur and iron interactions had also influence on phosphorus cycling and released from sediment into overlying water may ensue over the dissolution of ferric iron intercede by iron-reducing bacteria. The nutrients release rate was calculated followed by release rate equation. The results showed that the sediments released large-scale quantity of ammonium nitrogen and phosphate, which are main inner source of overlying water pollution. A mechanical migration of key nutrients such as ammonia and inorganic phosphate was depicted numerically with Fick's diffusion law, which showed a fair agreement to most of the experimental data.

  • 회분식 반응조에서 마이크로(mZVI) 및 나노(nZVI) 크기의 영가 철을 환원물질로 이용하여 고폭화약물질 3종에 대한 환원동역학을 측정하였다. 각 화약류를 이용하여 어미물질에 대한 nZVI와 mZVI의 비표면적 환원상수 $k_{SA}$과 비중량 환원상수 $k_{M}$을 측정한 후, 중간산물의 거동을 비교하였다. 그 결과 두 상수를 사용해서는 nZVI 반응조내 어미 물질과 중간환원산물들의 거동을 완전히 설명할 수 없었다. 화약물질을 mZVI로 처리한 반응조에서는 초기 환원물질인 nitroso-RDXs, nitroso-HMXs 및 hydroxylamino-TNT가 주로 축적되었으나, nZVI로 처리한 반응조에서는 동일한 겉보기 반응속도임에도 불구하고 환원말기물질인 극성중간산물들과 TAT가 축적되었다. 그러므로 중간산물들의 환원까지 고려하는 새로운 매계변수의 개발이 필요한 것으로 판단된다.

Influence of Water Volume on Particle Characteristics of Iron Powder with Insulated Coating for a Compacted Magnetic Core

  • Seasonal changes have been recognized in particle characteristics and forming characteristics of iron powder with insulated coating for a compacted magnetic core because of its high hygroscopicity, due to its phosphate coating and resin binder additives. For this reason, particle characteristics and molding characteristics of the powder with diverse water absorbtivity have been studied. The result shows that the higher the volume of absorbed water, the worse the fluidity becomes, resulting in the reduction in both springback during the molding process and expansion reduction after the heat treatment. The requirement on dimension accuracy for the finished product can be satisfied with an additional drying process on the material powder, which contributes to maintain its water volume constant.
