  • The Highway Capacity Manual(HCM) suggests estimating the average green time for the performance evaluation of the traffic actuated operation and Provides the average green time estimation model. However, the model provides with much room for improvements. This document proposes a new analytical model that overcomes the shortage of the HCM model. The average green times estimated by the HCM model and the proposed model were compared. A computer program using the proposed model was coded for the study, while the ACT348 program was used for the implementation of the HCM model Through the comparison study based on the 1,196 hypothetical simulation data surrogating field data, it was found that the average green times estimated by the proposed model yields much nicer one-to-one linear relationship to the simulation results than the ones from the HCM model in both exclusive-only and shared-permitted cases. The R2 values of the proposed and the HCM models with those cases are 0.90 and 0.56, and 0.86 and 0.57, respectively.

  • White LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are promising new-generation light sources which can replace conventional lamps due to their high reliability, low energy consumption and eco-friendly effects. This paper briefly reviews recent progress of oxy/nitride host phosphor and quantum dot materials with broad excitation band characteristics for phosphor-converted white LEDs. Among oxy/nitride host materials, $M_2Si_5N_8$ : $Eu^{2+}$, $MAlSiN_3$ : $Eu^{2+}$ M-SiON (M = Ca, Sr, Ba), ${\alpha}/{\beta}$-SiAlON : $Eu^{2+}$ are excellent phosphors for white LED using blue-emitting chip. They have very broad excitation bands in the range of 440~460 nm and exhibit emission from green to red. In this paper, In this review we focus on recent developments in the crystal structure, luminescence and applications of the oxy/nitride phosphors for white LEDs. In addition, the application prospects and current trends of research and development of quantum dot phosphors are also discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the current right-turn operation at signalized intersections and suggest appropriate right-turn operation strategy. From field investigation, right-turn signals have not only operated various type and shape, lacking of consistency, but also there was no clear regulations or standards. It could increase drivers' confusion and cause vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents. In order to improve pedestrian safety, there is urgent need to study the regulations and standards regarding to right-turn traffic control. This study suggests appropriate right-turn signal operation strategy. In case of permissive right-turn operation, it should be stated on regulations that red light means right-turn vehicles must stop temporarily at the stop line and then turn right. Necessary conditions for installing right-turn signal for protected operation are that there should have one or more exclusive right-turn lanes and right-turn signal face should contain the lenses with three-color arrow indication. In addition, we assort right-turn operation types as permissive, protected and protected/permissive right-turn and suggest specific signal operation strategy by the types.

  • Korean Highway Capacity Manual applies 7 adjustment factors to estimate saturation flows at signalized intersections. Among the adjustment factors, the right-turn adjustment factor uses equation hard to understand and requires complicated computing process comparing other adjustment factors. Thus. this study was conducted in order to suggest a new technique of estimating the right-turn adjustment factor which is easy to understand and simple to computer by having reasonable degree of accuracy. In this study the right-turn saturation flow ratios which are important in estimating the factor are suggested and the equation to estimate the volume of right-turn on red signal(RTOR) is developed based on observed data. The right-turn saturation flow rates can be estimated according to turning radius and number of lanes of crossing road dividing right-turn lanes into canalized and uncanalized lanes. The RTOR volume is estimated using the proportion of the time during which RTOR is possible to the whole time of red signal according to the through traffic volume per lane of the approach at signalized intersections. The technique of estimating the right-turn adjustment factor suggested in this study, which follows the HCM2000 of U.S. in principal, first judges the right-turn lane to be used exclusively for right-turn or not by employing the RTOR factor and the judging equation developed in this study. Next, if the right-turn lane is not exclusive right-turn lane, the shared right-turn lane is classified into single lane approach or multi lane approach. Thus, a total of three methods of estimating the right-turn adjustment factor to the three cases are suggested in this study.

  • Heat stroke in a dog is a life-threatening syndrome characterized by a high body temperature over $41^{\circ}C$, by the central nervous system dysfunction, and by multiple organ dysfunction. A 11-month-old male American Pit Bull Terrier was presented to clarify the cause of death to diagnostic laboratory. This dog showed clinical signs such as high body temperature ($42^{\circ}C$), severe tachypnea, hematochezia, epistaxis and hemoptysis after transportation at hot summer time. At necropsy, there were hemorrhages in skin, serosa of stomach and small intestine, and also dark red fluid in lumen of intestine. Histopathologic examination revealed extensive hemorrhages in stomach, muscle, skin, and tongue. In microbiology, pathologic bacteria such as Pasteurella, Boedetella, Salmonella, Clostridium, and circulating virus in Korea such as CDV, CIV, CAV, CHV, CCV, CPIV were negative except CPV. There were many gross and microscopic lesions suggesting hest stroke while pathologic agents and related lesions were not detected. Therefore we diagnosed this case as heatstroke.

  • The purpose of this study was to test the safety of the heel rest which was made for reducing the automobile driver's muscle fatigue with automatic transmission. Sixty subjects participated in the test, including ten males and ten females in 30s, 40s, 50s, respectively. Simulator consisted of automobile cockpit, accelerator and brake pedal sensor, heel rest. and driving displays. 30 seconds were given to subjects to be accustomed to the simulator environment. They also had one pre-trial to use the brake pedal according to the experimental scenario. They were told to step on the brake pedal immediately as soon as the red light was on the display The reaction time representing the foot travel time between accelerator and brake pedal was measured with/without the heel rest. In results, there was no significant difference in reaction time between conditions with/without heel rest. The result indicated that the heel rest used in this study would be a safe accessory for drivers who need to reduce the fatigue of the muscle or joint during driving.

  • Provision of in-vehicle warning information is of keen interest since it can be effectively used to prevent traffic accident on the road. This study evaluates the effectiveness of information provision modalities based on kansei engineering. Various warning information scenarios using different modalities are devised for the evaluation. Statistical data analysis techniques including factor analysis, correlation analysis, and the general linear model are used to assess the user's affect for information modalities. The evaluation result shows that the provision of visual information consisted of 'text and pictogram' leads to higher understandability. The combination of beep sound and voice message' was identified as a more effective modality for auditory warning. In addition, the red color for the blinking warning signal was preferred by users.

  • Pedestrians are exposed to accidents as a result of the lack of understanding the meaning of a flashing green signal. This study was to designed to relate changes of pedestrians' crossing characteristics as a functions of flashing green signal timings. A field survey was conducted to collect pedestrian preference and safety and it was examined by signal operation experiment. Two versions of new pedestrian signal timings were compared to the existing pedestrian signal timings. The results indicated that the number of pedestrians who starts to cross during flashing green signals was significantly decreased when flashing green signals started at 1/2 or 2/3 point of crossing. However, the number of pedestrians who remain in the crossing during red signals was significantly increased when flashing green signals started at 2/3 point of crossing. This study concludes that starting flashing green signals at 1/2 point of crossing is the safest. Also, implication and directions for its practical relevance were discussed.

  • Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals were synthesized by pulsed laser ablations in de-ionized water and sodium dodecyl sulfate (NaC12H25SO4, SDS) aqueous solution for up-conversion (UC) luminescence bio-labeling applications. The influences of the SDS molecules on the crystallinities, crystal morphologies, crystallite sizes, and UC luminescence properties of the prepared Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals were investigated in detail. Under a 980-nm excitation, the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped nanocolloidal NaLa(MoO4)2 suspension exhibited a weak red emission near 670 nm and strong green UC emissions at 530 and 550 nm, corresponding to the intra 4f transitions of Er3+ (4F9/2, 2H11/2, 4S3/2) → Er3+ (4I15/2). When the SDS solution was used, a smaller average crystallite size, narrower size distribution, and enhanced UC luminescence were observed. These characteristics were attributed to the amphoteric SDS molecules attached to the positively charged Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals, effectively occupying the oxygen defect on their surfaces. The Er3+/Yb3+-codoped nanocrystalline NaLa(MoO4)2 suspension prepared in the SDS solution exhibited a remarkably strong green emission visible to the naked eyes.

  • In modern air combat, infrared signals play an important role in the detection of opponents and must be reduced to improve survivability and stealth. In particular, IR signals generated in the wake of aircraft engines have high intensity and short wavelengths, so most heat-tracking missiles detect these signals. Accordingly, the measurement and characteristic analysis of Gas radiation signals from the engine's wake were carried out in this study. Micro turbojet engine has been configured to simulate a real aircraft turbofan engine, and the characteristics of IR signal reduction by adjusting the bypass ratio were identified. Through this, the IR signal characteristics for each wavelength are analyzed and verification of signal reduction technologies is performed.
