Therefore to satisfy the consumer with an trendy image, the fashion design must be found first, as image matters, followed by an analysis of each design element's effect on the total image composition. In this thesis, two of the fashion design elements, color and fabric are simultaneously considered to classify the image of fabric in fashion. For the color variables, 10 hues are selected from Munsell's system of color notation, and 12 tones from PCCS color notation., which are currently used in the domestic fashion industry. • In this study I surveyed the dress and the color symbolism of Scarlett and Melanie in the movie "Gone with the Wind" based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell. In investigating the dress and the color symbolism, I analyzed Scarlett and Melanie's image as described in the novel, and examined how the symbolic imagery is represented through coloration based on the DVD reproduction of the movie "Gone with the Wind" originally produced in 1939. In her novel, the author Margaret Mitchell introduced two women, Scarlett and Melanie, whose respective image sharply contrasts with each other. To express Scarlett's young, vigorous, lusty, and vivacious image, she uses green to depict the character, clothing, and background on the whole. Black, which mainly expresses the death image of the mourning dress. Red symbolizes her fast and lavish image. On the other hand, gray is used to describe Melanie's sedate, shyness, and modest image while alluding to her gloomy atmosphere. Brown symbolizes her sedate and plain image in the novel. In the movie, green symbolizes Scarlett's overwhelming image of youth and liveliness as also depicted in the novel. Melanie, however, seems to appear consistently in gray-blue or purple dresses to reflect her image of modesty, sedation and dignity. Melanie's blue image contrasts with Scarlett's blue image in that the latter is used to hint at the omen to a tragedy to come. Red is used to express Scarlett's passionate and fast image. Black symbolizes death or mourning in the movie.

  • This study examines the unique characteristics of the color red in relation to images used in areas other than fashion, such as the film or advertising industries. Based on analysed results, the aim was to identify red-colored costume's images expressed in contemporary fashion. Analysis of collected data has lead to four main findings. First, the fashion in which the red color is used delivers a voluptuous image when combined with a skinny silhouette or glossy and transparent dress material, arousing a strong sexual desire in a direct or indirect manner when exposing the body in public. Second, the fashion emphasizes a simplified appearance by minimizing the steps of the production process such as cutting, sewing, and decoration without artificial structural lines and creates an image of simplicity through a single red color or tone-in-tone colorations. Third, the red color, which carries a simultaneous negative and pleasure image represents grotesque playfulness by distorting or exaggerating clothes, transforming the body in disregard of clothing construction, or introducing unnatural makeup. Fourth, in combination of simple and clinging shapes, a material feeling tough like leather and an intensely noticeable red tone, promotes the feminine rather than masculine quality in a splendid, aggressive sporty and active "alpha girl" image.
