  • In this paper, a method of disassembly time evaluation for a product has been proposed. The product designer can predict the ability of disassembly for a given product in terms of time by considering a type, size, weight, connection parts, and the movement distance of the product. The equation for calculating disassembly time were derived by applying the basis motion status of worker and some informations of connection parts, various tools, and many different type of assembly structures. The developed method of evaluating disassembly time has been applied to disassemble the product by manual labor. The proposed method has shown that the actual disassembly time was well predicted.

  • This paper reports on the outline and the status of the TAMA-300 project, the 300 meter laser interferometer gravitational wave detector developed by a team of scientists of several research institutes and universities in Japan. In fact the project has been funded and its construction started at the National Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka, in spring 1995. And the constructions of the tunnels for the east-west and north-south arms and of the central building are completed and a half of pipes for laser beams were brought in. Very stable laser oscillator has been almost completed and mew techniques such as vibration isolations, recycling of laser power, and suspension of mirrors by double pendulums have been developed. In fact the purposes of the project are to establish techniques necessary for future km-class detectors and to operate the detector to catch possible gravitational wave events in nearby galaxies such as Andromeda, the target sensitivity being $3 {\times} 10^{-21}$ at 300Hz.

  • This study purports to investigate the status quo of the environmentally-friendly green healthcare in teaching hospitals through the questionnaire survey. Data were collected from a total of 46 hospitals. The survey results revealed that most teaching hospitals did not meet the global standard of environmentally-friendly green hospitals. Especially, such items as alternative energy system, water recycling, CO2 emission reduction, green building construction, installation of pond or spring were found to be significantly below global standard. Based upon the study results, various strategies for establishing green hospitals were discussed. For example, energy saving design, such as solar heating, natural wind cooling, automatic temperature controller, green material use, wall surrounded by ivy, were recommended. In conclusion, the strategy and evaluation tool developed in the study will provide a good guide for establishing environmentally-friendly green hospitals.

  • Autophagy is a lysosome-dependent intracellular degradation process that allows recycling of cytoplasmic constituents into bioenergetic and biosynthetic materials for maintenance of homeostasis. Since the function of autophagy is particularly important in various stress conditions, perturbation of autophagy can lead to cellular dysfunction and diseases. Accumulation of abnormal protein aggregates, a common cause of neurodegenerative diseases, can be reduced through autophagic degradation. Recent studies have revealed defects in autophagy in most cases of neurodegenerative disorders. Moreover, deregulated excessive autophagy can also cause neurodegeneration. Thus, healthy activation of autophagy is essential for therapeutic approaches in neurodegenerative diseases and many autophagy-regulating compounds are under development for therapeutic purposes. This review describes the overall role of autophagy in neurodegeneration, focusing on various therapeutic strategies for modulating specific stages of autophagy and on the current status of drug development.

  • Chromatography has been method of choice for the separation complex biologi-cal mixtures fro analytical purpose, particularly for the last fifty years. Its use has recently been extended to preparative separation where the productivity relative to the amount of resin and sol-vent used is a matter of concern. To overcome the inherent thermodynamic inefficiency of batch chromatography, as exemplified by the partial temporal usage of the resin and dilution of the product with the solvent, chromatography has been continually modified by separation engineers. Column switching and recycling represnet some of the process modifications that have brought high productivity to chromatography. Recently, the simulated moving bed (SMB) method, which claims a high separation efficiency based on counter-current moving bed chromatography. has be-come the mainstay of preparative separation, especially in chiral separation. Accordingly, this pa-per reviews the current status of SMB along with several chromatographic modification, which may be helpful in routine laboratory and industrial chromatographic practices.

  • The government makes efforts to expand the recycling activities of construction waste soil and to increase the usage of recycled aggregate. Accordingly, it has defined the compulsory usage and quality standard by usage of recycled aggregate. To satisfy these efforts requires both technology to produce recycled aggregate which meets the required quality and companies with the technology. Therefore, it requires to review a current status of facilities at the companies which deal with construction wastes. The companies dealing with construction wastes gradually produce the high quality of recycled aggregate. In particular, companies which has over 3-stage processing system for waste concrete continue to increase and means to remove foreign substances are gradually improved.

  • The oyster shells of about 240,000 tons have been annually produced in south coast of South Korea. However, about 25% of the oyster shells (60,000tons) was recycled as oyster seeding and fertilizer due to the limited amount of consumption for such purposes. The stored amount of oyster shell in the fertilizer manufacturing company is overfilled, and thus cannot accept any more of the waste oyster shells. As a result, landfill and illegal dumping of waste oyster shells have become an increasingly serious issue since 2011. In this research, the problems generated by the oyster shells were investigated through surveying activities. One of the possible alternative solutions that can process large amount of waste economically was found to be the application of oyster shells as a construction materials.

  • This research reviewed the status of binder removal depending on the heating temperature and duration by using the 3D sand mold as an electric heating method. In the case of the electric heating method, it was confirmed that a heating temperature of at least 800℃ or higher was required to remove the binder of the 3D sand mold, and the heating duration was confirmed to be about 10 minutes. Afterwards, it is considered necessary to further evaluate the additional binder removal method and the utilization of recycling silica in consideration of economic feasibility and productivity.

  • Asia is not only the primary region for global pig production but also the largest consumer of pork worldwide. Although the pig production in Asia has made great progress in the past, it still is confronted with numerous challenges. These challenges include: inadequate land and feed resources, a substantial number of small-scale pig farms, escalating pressure to ensure environmental conservation, control of devastating infectious diseases, as well as coping with high temperatures and high humidity. To solve these problems, important investments of human and financial capital are required to promote large-scale production systems, exploit alternative feed resources, implement precision feeding, and focus on preventive medicine and vaccines as alternatives to antibiotics, improve pig breeding, and increase manure recycling. Implementation of these techniques and management practices will facilitate development of more environmentally-friendly and economically sustainable pig production systems in Asia, ultimately providing consumers with healthy pork products around the world.
