  • This study was to investigate the extraction characteristics of extraction resins containing HEH/EHP for Gadolinium solution. The experiments were carried out with the variation of equilibrium pH and initial concentration of Gd. The optimum extraction time was 90 mins on Gd extraction using resin. The extraction ratio(%) was increased by increasing equilibrium pH from pH 1.0 to 2.0. The experimentally measured amounts of Gd on resins at equilibrium agreed well with those predicted using Freundlich's isotherm.

  • In solvent extraction, extraction isotherm represents the relation between the equilibrium concentration of metal in the aqueous and organic phase. McCabe-Thiele diagram on which extraction isotherm and operating line are constructed provides valuable information on the mass transfer operation. When the equilibrium constant of a solvent extraction reaction is known, the calculation method to obtain extraction isotherm was introduced. Kresmer equation by which the number of extraction stages can be calculated when the distribution coefficient is constant was introduced.

  • Waste office paper, photocopied or laser printed, has recently increased along with office automatization. In waste office paper, toner ink is used as the printing medium in place of conventional oil ink. Since toner ink cannot be saponificated by alkali and be decolored by bleaching, different from the case of oil ink, toner remains on regenerated paper as black specks. Although cascade recycling of waste office paper is compelled at present, the demand for low-grade paper is limited. From such circumstances, a new separation process for waste office paper is demanded to achieve parallel recycling. At the first stage of separation studies, the sharpness of separation is evaluated using small separators to obtain fundamental data. In a lab-scale separator, the sample amount of one feed is generally a few grams. However, the sample amount used for brightness, ERIC, and image analysis that are generally used to evaluate the efficiency of deinking are not small for lab-scale tests of these analyses. This paper describes an investigation of a sheet preparation method by a small amount of sample under 0.5g and compares the precision of toner content determination of spectroscopic analysis and image analysis from the viewpoint of separation evaluation. The easiness and convenience of the operation using only general-purpose equipments has also been set as a principle purpose. From the viewpoint of an analysis that yields high precision with a small amount of sample in short time, the method calculating the absorption coefficient from diffuse reflectance in the visible region is the most rational method in this study.

  • Recycling demolished concrete as an alternative source of coarse aggregates for the production of new concrete can help solve the growing waste disposal crisis and the problem of depleted natural aggregates. The purpose of this study is to investigate chloride migration of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials by chloride migration coefficient. The specimens were made with recycled coarse aggregate as various replacement ratio(10, 30, 50%) and metakaolin, blast furnace slag, fly ash is replaced for recycled concrete with mixing ratio 20%. The major results are as follows. 1) Compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials increase as curing age and chloride migration decrease. 2) When the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate is 30%, the chloride migration coefficient of recycled concrete containing blast furnace slag, metakaolin shows the similar or lower value than plain concrete at all ages.

  • The permeability of converter slag, replacing material of sand mat on improving soft clay foundation, was evaluated in the laboratory. The effects of grain size, flow water time and aging were investigated using sea and fresh water. Converter slag being submerged with fresh water, the coefficients of permeability in A and B samples less than 10mm grain sizes were measured as 6.52${\times}$10$\^$-2/cm/sec and 5.99${\times}$10$\^$-1/cm/sec, while changed as 1.88${\times}$10$\^$-2/cm/sec, 3.86${\times}$10$\^$-1/cm/sec under sea water condition. Also, the condition of turbulent flow may exit and was experimentally identified from the relationship between hydraulic gradient and seepage velocity. After 180 days on using sea water, the coefficients of permeability of sample A and B samples decreased ten times smaller than those initial values. And after that time continually decreased as for till 360 days. The reduction of permeability coefficient was considered to influence filled with voids in high-calcium quicklime(CaO). However, in-situ coefficient of permeability was practically satisfactory.

  • Existing porous concrete has problems with reduction of strength due to freezing and thawing and exfoliation of aggregate at joints. In this study, a method for increasing strength and durability of porous concrete by using fine aggregate, silica-fume and high-range water-reducing agent was proposed by laboratory tests. Mixing ratio between silica-fume (10%) and fine aggregate (0%, 7%, 15%) was selected as a major test factor, and laboratory tests for compressive strength, flexural strength, permeability coefficient, porosity, freezing and thawing were conducted. Compressive strength and flexural strength were increased as the mixing ratio of fine aggregate was increased. However, permeability and freezing-thawing resistance were decreased due to reduction of porosity. Therefore, the ratio of fine aggregate should be limited to increase strength and durability of the porous concrete, while the mixing ratio of silica-fume should be over 10%.

  • The objective of this study is the evaluation of the performance of a large-scale respirometer (LSR) of 17.7 L in the determination of the methane generation rate constant (k) values. To achieve this objective, a comparison between anaerobic (GB21) and LSR tests was conducted. The data were modeled using a linear function, and the resulting correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of the linear regression is 0.91. This result shows that despite the aerobic conditions, the biodegradability values that were obtained from the LSR test produced results that are similar to those from the GB21 test. In this respect, the LSR test can be an indicator of the anaerobic biodegradability for landfill waste. In addition, the results show the high repeatability of the tests with an average coefficient of variance (CV) that is lower than 10%; furthermore, the CV for the LSR is lower than that of the GB21, which indicates that the LSR-test method could provide a better representation of waste samples. Therefore, the LSR method allows for both the prediction of the long-term biodegradation potential in a shorter length of time and the reduction of the sampling errors that are caused by the heterogeneity of waste samples. The k values are $0.156y^{-1}$ and $0.127y^{-1}$ for the cumulative biogas production (GB21) and the cumulative oxygen uptake for the LSR, respectively.

  • This study was performed to estimate bubble dissolution rate by change of hydraulic pressure according to increase of water depth. Experimental results showed that airflow rate was decreased by increase of hydraulic pressure. Because the force which acts on outlet of nozzle was increased by increase of hydraulic pressure. Mass-transfer coefficient decreased with decreasing airflow rate and increasing effective volume due to increase of hydraulic pressure as water depth increased. On the contrary, as the water depth increased, the bubble dissolution rate was increased because longer residence time of microbubble which was generated by ejector type microbubble generator. However it was thought that if water depth for capacity of ejector type microbubble generator is excessively increasing, bubble dissolution rate would be reduced due to low airflow rate and mass-transfer coefficient. Therefore, it is importance to consider the water depth when operating ejector type microbubble generator.

  • The immobilization of the hydroxylamine-oxidoreductase on the water channel surface was performed to investigate the efficacy of ammonia removal in turbulent flow. The reaction by this enzyme proceeds rapidly by converting hydroxylamine into nitrous acid. For the analysis of the effect, a dimensionless mass transfer governing equation was established with the physical properties based on room temperature. The ammonia diffusion coefficient in water and the kinematic viscosity coefficient of water were 2.45×10-9 ㎡/s and 1×10-6 ㎡/s, respectively. The distribution of ammonia concentration in the water was calculated with respect to the distance from the point at which exposure to ammonia began. The quantitative distribution with respect to the mixing depth was also found. Such a quantitative analysis can provide insight into whether the enzyme immobilized on the water channel surface can be effectively used for ammonia removal.
