The loss and degradation in tropical forest region are some of the current global concern. Hence, these issues elevated the role of rehabilitated forests in providing ecological products and services. The information on the carbon stock is important in relation to global carbon and biomass use, but lacking from the tropical region. This paper reports the assessment of tree and soil carbon stock in a chronosequence rehabilitated tropical forest stands in Malaysia. The study site was at the UPM-Mitsubishi Forest Rehabilitation Project, UPMKB. $20{\times}20m$ plot was established each and assessed in 2009 at 1-, 10- and 19-year-old sites while an adjacent ${\pm}23-year-old$ natural regenerating secondary forest plot was established for comparison. The overall total carbon stock was in the order of 19-year-old>${\pm}23-year-old$>10-year-old>1-year-old. When forest carbon stock is low, the soil component plays an important role in the carbon storage. The forest carbon recovery is crucial to increase soil carbon stock. The variations in the carbon stock showed the different stages of the forest recovery. Species survived after 19-years of planting are potential species for carbon sequestration activities in rehabilitated forest. Human intervention in rehabilitating degraded forest areas through tree planting initiatives is crucial towards recovering the forest ecological role especially in forest carbon stock capacity.

To understand natural regeneration and stand development after fire in mixed broadleaved-coniferous forests of Sikhote-Alin Mountains, ten sample plots of $50m{\times}50m$ size were established in 1975 and 1983 at the stands burned by wildfires in 1973 and 1982, respectively. And, the number of naturally regenerated seedlings were monitored in two $50m{\times}4m$ subplots in each plot. The most fire-sensitive conifer species is Abies nephrolepis, while Betula costata is the most fire-sensitive broadleaved tree species. The most fire-resistant species were Q. mongolica, T. taquetii and A. mono. The results of 20 and 30 years after the fire showed that pioneer tree species, e.g. Populus, Salix, and Betula, were regenerated immediately at the early stage of stand development and grew where there is a mono canopy layer with high density. On the other hand, the densities of successors, e.g. Pinus koraiensis, Picea jezoensis, Abies nephrolepis, Acer mono and Tilia taquetii, which were present in the study plots before the fire, increased gradually. Naturally regenerated tree species after forest fire by the growth rate were divided into three groups according to their annual height growth. The seral tree species (Betula costata, Betula platyphylla, Padus maackii, Populus tremula and Sarix caprea) belong to the first group and have the highest growth rate (from 40 to 96 cm per year). The late successional broad-leaved trees (Tilia taquetii, Acer mono and Quercus mongolica) belong to the second group and have intermediate annual height growth (from 3.7 to 13.5 cm per year). The late successional coniferous species (Picea jezoensis, Pinus koraiensis and Abies nephrolepis) form the third group and have the least annual height growth (from 1.4 to 3.5 cm per year).
Over a period of 1962-64, a transmission-experiment of witchess' broom of jujube tree by stem-grafting was conducted. When stem-grafting of sound scions upon diseased roots or diseased scions upon sound roots were carried out, disease transmission of high rate was witnessed; 99% in the former and, in the latter, 62% of the stocks which saw union by callussing and had new shoots. Even when the diseased scions by stem-grafting or the diseased buds by budding upon sound stock died away, the transmission rate was 21% in stem-grafting and 14% in budding which seems to show that, when tissues of diseased plants and stocks are kept contacted over a certain period, the disease transmission occurs. And when the recovered scions taken from once diseased tree were grafted upon diseased roots, the transmission rate was 100 % and therefore it is presumed that the immunity could not be acquired even under the assumption of complete recovery from the disease. In stem-grafting of the diseased scions upon sound roots, 98% of the scions which were stored in the cellar, overwintered and grafted in spring was diseased, whereas the disease rate of the scions which were cut and grafted in spring was only 33%. It was particularly noteworthy that 90% of the scions in the former case and only 3% in the latter case were diseased as of June 18th approximately 2 months after the actual grafting and then the latter advanced to 33% with the passage of time. It appears that the pathogen in branches and shoots of the diseased trees standing outdoors become inactivated or diminished during winter. Through its symptom, pathological change in tissue, and easy transmission of the disease via stem-grafting, it seems certain that the pathogen of the witches broom disease in jujube tree is a virus.
In this paper we propose a method which can be used to enhance the reliability of E-ODMRP (Enhanced On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol). E-ODMRP has low overhead compared to its predecessors since it performs periodic refresh at a rate dynamically adapted to the nodes' mobility and adopts the local recovery. Upon detecting a broken route, a node performs a local search to graft to the forwarding mesh proactively. However in E-ODMRP there is no packet recovery mechanism. A receiver may lose some packets when it is detached from the multicast tree. We propose a simple packet recovery mechanism that can be incorporated into E-ODMRP for enhanced reliability. We show via simulation that our mechanism effectively enhances the reliability of E-ODMRP.

In this study, we performed anti-oxidation, whitening, cell recovery and anti-inflammation effects with Alisma orientale to evaluate the cosmeceutical properties. Alisma orientate extract (30, 70, 100 % MeOH) exhibited a significant tree radical scavenging effect against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazine (DPPH) radical generation and showed tyrosinase inhibition effect in a dose dependent manner (over 0.5% concentration). In cell proliferation assay using human fibroblast, it didn't show any proliferation effect but showed safety from cytotoxicity under 0.05% concentration. For whitening assay, we evaluated the melanin synthesis rate using B16 melanocyte and it showed a significant inhibitory effect (up to 40% under 0.05% concentration). After major screening assay, we separate 3 fractions from Alisma orientate extract by MPLC and performed cell recovery assay, melanin synthesis inhibition assay and anti-inflammatory assay. The third fraction showed a cell recovery effect over 30% against radical damage and remarkable repression in melanin synthesis and COX-2 synthesis.
In order to evaluate the effects of nitrogen (N) rate and application method on the recovery of N fertilizer applied in spring and summer by Satsuma mandarins (cv. Miyakawa Wase), N as urea was surface-applied at the rates of 50 (applied with 20 mm water; 50% N application) and 100% (three treatments; applied as solid, with 5 or 20 mm water) of the recommended rate ($150kg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$) on 25 March and 12 June with an application ratio of 50 and 20%. The labeled N was applied only once in spring or summer. There were no differences among the four treatments in fruit yield, fruit quality except acid content of juice, and N content of leaves. The recovery of fertilizer N applied in spring by a tree ranged from 7.8 to 8.3% and that of N applied in summer ranged from 11.3 to 14.2% at the three recommended N rates and was 18.0% for the 50% N application. The recovery of fertilizer N applied in spring in the upper 40 cm of soil ranged from 32.1 to 37.7% at the three recommended N rates and was 55.8% at the 50% N application. For N applied in summer, it was 69.8% for surface application of the recommended N rate and ranged from 80.7 to 84.4% for the three N applications with water. The total (tree+soil) recovery of N fertilizer applied in spring was highest (64.1%) for the 50% N application and ranged from 40.3 to 45.5% for the three recommended N rates. The total recovery of N fertilizer applied in summer was also highest (99.4%) for the 50% N application and tended to be higher for the application of N with water than surface application and to increase with increasing irrigation amount of N application.
The DYLAM-3 code which overcomes the limitation of event tree/fault tree was applied to LOOP (Loss of Off-site Power) in the mid-loop operation employing HEPs (Human Error Probabilities) supplied by the ASEP (Accident Sequence Evaluation Program) and the SEPLOT (Systematic Evaluation Procedure for Low power/shutdown Operation Task) procedure in this study. Thus the time history of core uncovery frequency during the mid-loop operation was obtained. The sensitivity calculations in the operator's actions to prevent core uncovery under LOOP in the mid-loop operation were carried out. The analysis using the time dependent HEP was performed on the primary feed & bleed which has the most significant effect on core uncovery frequency. As the result, the increment of frequency is shown after 200 minutes duration of simulation conditions. This signifies the possibility of increment in risk after 200 minutes. The primary feed & bleed showed the greatest impact on core uncovery frequency and the recovery of the SCS (Shutdown Cooling System) showed the least impact. Therefore the efforts should be taken on the primary feed & bleed to reduce the core uncovery frequency in the mid-loop operation. And the capability of DYLAM-3 in applying to the time dependent concerns could be demonstrated.
This study was executed to find the applicability of press drying of tree disk by investigating the shrinkage and drying defect and to form appropriate model by comparing the actual moisture content(MC) and internal temperature in respect of drying time with calculated values based computer simulation to which was applied finite difference method. In press drying disk, heating period, constant drying rate period maintained plateau temperature at 100$^{\circ}C$ and falling drying rate period were significantly distinguished. Actual MC and internal temperature were analogous to those calculated at comparing points. Heat transfer model formed by Fourier's law using specific heat of moist wood and conduction coefficient considering fractional volume of each element of wood cell wall, bound water, free water and air showed applicability as basic data to developing heat expansion, shrinkage and drying stress during press drying. Also mass transfer model formed by Fick's diffusion law using water vapor diffusion coefficient showed applicability. Longitudinal shrinkage was developed by pressure of hot press and tangential shrinkage was restrained by hygrothermal recovery. The heart check, surface check and ring failure were occurred differently in species, but V-shaped crack didn't develop.

The Zienkiewicz-Zhu(Z/Z) error estimate is slightly modified for the hierarchical p-refinement, and is then applied to L-shaped plates subjected to bending to demonstrate its effectiveness. An adaptive procedure in finite element analysis is presented by p-refinement of meshes in conjunction with a posteriori error estimator that is based on the superconvergent patch recovery(SPR) technique. The modified Z/Z error estimate p-refinement is different from the conventional approach because the high order shape functions based on integrals of Legendre polynomials are used to interpolate displacements within an element, on the other hand, the same order of basis function based on Pascal's triangle tree is also used to interpolate recovered stresses. The least-square method is used to fit a polynomial to the stresses computed at the sampling points. The strategy of finding a nearly optimal distribution of polynomial degrees on a fixed finite element mesh is discussed such that a particular element has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing p-levels non-uniformly or selectively. It is noted that the error decreases rapidly with an increase in the number of degrees of freedom and the sequences of p-distributions obtained by the proposed error indicator closely follow the optimal trajectory.
The 2020 summer extreme flood severely disturbed the riparian ecosystem of the Seomjin River. Some trees were killed by the flood impact, whereas others have recovered through epicormic regeneration after the disturbance. At the same time, several tree individuals newly germinated. This research aimed to explain the recovery of the riparian ecosystem by spatial proximity between each tree individual of different characteristics, such as "dead", "recovered", and "newly germinated". A spatial point pattern analysis based on K and g-functions revealed that the newly germinated trees and the existing trees were distributed in the spatially clumping patterns. However, further detailed analysis revealed that the new trees were statistically less attracted to the recovered trees than the dead trees, implying competitive interactions hidden in the facilitative interactions. Habitat amelioration by the existing trees positively affected the growth of the new trees, while "living" existing trees were competing with the new trees for resources. This research is expected to provide new knowledge in this era of rapid climate change, which likely induces stronger and more frequent natural disturbance than before. Environmental factors have been widely used for ecosystem modeling, but species interactions, represented by the relative spatial distribution of plant individuals, are also valuable factors explaining ecosystem dynamics.
