  • This paper presents a wavelet-based neural network technology for the detection and classification of the short durations type of power quality disturbances. Transients happen during very short durations to the nano- and microsecond. Thus, a method for detecting and classifying transient signals at the same time and in an automatic combines the properties of the wavelet transform and the advantages of neural networks. Especially, the additional feature extraction to improve the recognition rate is considered. The configuration of the hardware of TMS320C6711 DSP based with 16 channel 20Mhz sampling rate A/D(Analog to Digital) converter and some case studies are described.

  • In this paper, image detection and recognition algorithms are studied with respect to embedded carrier system. There are many suggested techniques to detect and recognize objects. But they have the propensity to need much calculation for high hit rate. Advanced and modified method needs to study for embedded systems that low power consumption and real time response are requested. The proposed methods were implemented using Intel(R) Open Source Computer Vision Library provided by Intel Corporation. And they run and tested on embedded system using a ARM920T processor by cross-compiling. They showed 1.6sec response time and 95% hit rate and supported the automated moving carrier system smoothly.

  • This paper introduce a technique for Word segmentation for the handwritten recognition of Urdu script. Word segmentation or word tokenization is a primary technique for understanding the sentences written in Urdu language. Several techniques are available for word segmentation in other languages but not much work has been done for word segmentation of Urdu Optical Character Recognition (OCR) System. A method is proposed for word segmentation in this paper. It finds the boundaries of words in a sequence of ligatures using probabilistic formulas, by utilizing the knowledge of collocation of ligatures and words in the corpus. The word identification rate using this technique is 97.10% with 66.63% unknown words identification rate.

  • This paper proposes an automatic detection method of intonational and accentual phrases in Korean standard continuous speech. We use the pause over 150 msec for detecting intonational phrases, and extract accentual phrases from the intonational phrases by analyzing syllables and pitch contours. The speech data for the experiment are composed of seven male voices and two female voices which read the texts of the fable 'the ant and the grasshopper' and a newspaper article 'manmulsang' in normal speed and in Korean standard variation. The results of the experiment shows that the detection rate of intonational phrases is 95% on the average and that of accentual phrases is 73%. This detection rate implies that we can segment the continuous speech into smaller units(i.e. prosodic phrases) by using the prosodic information and so the objects of speech recognition can narrow down to words or phrases in continuous speech.

  • Recently the fingerprint is widely used as one of biometrics to improve the security of financial mobile applications, because of its user convenience and high recognition rate. However, in order to apply fingerprint algorithms to finance and security applications, the recognition rate and processing speed of the fingerprint algorithms have to be improved further. In this paper, we propose the parallel fingerprint enhancement algorithm on general-purpose computing on graphics processing unit (GPGPU) using OpenCL. We discuss the analysis of the parallelism in the fingerprint algorithm as well as the exploration of optimization parameters of the parallel fingerprint algorithm to improve the performance. The experimental results showed that the execution of parallel fingerprint enhancement algorithm on GPGPUs was accelerated from 29.4 upto 69.2 times compared with the execution of the original one on the host CPUs.

  • This paper is about a personal identification algorithm using an ECG that has been studied by a few researchers recently. Previously published algorithm can be classified as two methods. One is the method that analyzes of ECG features and the other is the morphological analysis of ECG. The main characteristic of proposed algorithm can be classified the method of analysis ECG features. Proposed algorithm adopts DSTW(Down Slope Trace Wave) for extracting ECG features, and applies SVM(Support Vector Machine) to training and testing as a classifier algorithm. We choose 18 ECG files from MIT-BIH Normal Sinus Rhythm Database for estimating of algorithm performance. The algorithm extracts 100 heartbeats from each ECG file, and use 40 heartbeats for training and 60 heartbeats for testing. The proposed algorithm shows clearly superior performance in all ECG data, amounting to 93.89% heartbeat recognition rate and 100% ECG recognition rate.

  • In this paper, we have proposed an improved fusion method of detection features which can enhance the detection probability under the given false alarm rate in the prescreening stage of SAR ATR(Synthetic Aperture Radar Automatic Target Recognition) system. Since the detection features have the positive correlation, the detection performance can be improved if the joint probability distribution of detection features is considered in the fusion process. The detection region is designed as a simple piecewise linear function which can be represented by few parameters. The parameters for the detection region can be derived by training the sample SAR images to maximize the detection probability with the given false alarm rate. Simulation result shows that the detection performance of the proposed method is improved for all combinations of detection features.

  • In this paper, we study the usage of phoneme duration information for rejection garbage sentence. First, we build a phoneme duration modeling in a speech recognition system based on dicicion tree state tying, We assume that phone duration has a Gamma distribution. Next, we build a verification module in which word-level confidence measure is used. Finally, we make a comparative study on phoneme duration with speech DB obtained from the live system. This DB consistes of OOT(out-of-task) and ING(in-grammar) utterences. the usage of phone duration information yields that OOT recognition rate is improved by 46% and that another 8.4% error rate is reduced when combined with utterence verification module.

  • This study proposed a Sasang constitution classification system that can increase the objectivity and reliability of Sasang constitution diagnosis using the image of frontal face, in order to solve problems in the subjective classification of Sasang constitution based on Sasang constitution specialists' experiences. For classification, characteristics indicating the shapes of the eyes, nose, mouth and chin were defined, and such characteristics were extracted using the morphological statistic analysis of face images. Then, Sasang constitution was classified through a SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier using the extracted characteristics as its input, and according to the results of experiment, the proposed system showed a correct recognition rate of 93.33%. Different from existing systems that designate characteristic points directly, this system showed a high correct recognition rate and therefore it is expected to be useful as a more objective Sasang constitution classification system.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for the on-line recognition of handwritten Hangeul is proposed. The strokes are recognized by the minimum distance parser. The phonemes are separated by the finite-state automata resulted from the state graph of phonemes which are produced by the order of strokes. By simulation result for 3,000 characteristics in practical sentences, the recognition rate of strokes is obtained to be 98.5% and the separation rate of phonemes is obtained to be 92.5%.
