  • Grounwater level applied on dredged and reclaimed clay layer was assumed to be the same value under design criterion as field test one, but actually differences are found through the monitoring test. In this study, a case study of measuring residual groundwater level is performed in ground improvement construction of Gwangyang container terminal and hinterland. With priority given to residual groundwater level measured during construction and management period of 9 years, it is investigated that residual groundwater level (R. GWL) could be applied reasonably to the design, construction, and use stages of the container harbor and land development.

  • The study area is located on the western coast, and the inner development construction has been ongoing since 2011. The purposes of current study are to effectively simulate and quantitatively predict a temporal and spatial distributions of water temperature and salinity due to the stages of inner development construction in saemangeum reclaimed area. The transient-state numerical modeling using EFDC model is done, and the numerical simulation results are validated reasonably by repetitive numerical model calibration procedures with respect to field measurements of water temperature and salinity. The spatial distributions of water temperature and salinity show similar trends before and after construction of the dikes. In spring season, the salinity has maximum value of 21 psu, while, in summer season, the salinity shows 7 psu in a whole modeling domain. Thus, it is clearly observed that salt water is replaced by freshwater. However, the salinity and temperature reach their initial conditions at the end of the year. The salinity after construction of the dikes is lower than that before construction of them at Mankyeong area. On the other hands, after construction of the dikes, the salinity after dredging operations is higher than that before dredging. Because drastical increasing of water volume in Saemangeum Lake leads to increasing of stagnation time at bottom layer, and salt water is easily intruded to the two estuaries. Therefore, it may be concluded that hydrodynamic characteristics on Saemangeum are dominated by either Mankyeong and Dongjin discharge or sluice gates in/out-flow amounts, and thus they must be properly considered when rigorous and reasonable predictions of water temperature and salinity according to the stages of inner development construction.

  • Water quality, benthic macroinvertebrate communities, and other factors were investigated to explore the effects of the effluent discharge from a sewage treatment plant into Jwagwang stream in Busan in 2019. During the study period, the flow rate of this stream was in the range of 10,400 m3/day to 52,200 m3/day except for the discharge of about 24,000 m3/day of the effluent. After discharge, the flow velocity increased by about 65% and the water depth increased by about 40%. At sites downstream of the discharge point, BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P, and other water quality values were worse than those of the upstream sites. The periphytic algal chlorophyll-a concentrations in the natural substrata were higher than those of the upstream sites, especially in May and August. However, at sites downstream of the discharge point, the individual numbers of Annelida were decreased and individual numbers of the insecta of arthropoda were increased. Also, species numbers and the diversity and dominance indexes were improved in the sites downstream of the discharge point. The functional feeding groups (FFGs) of collector-filterers were increased and the habitat orientation groups (HOGs) of sprawlers, burrowers, and clingers were especially increased at the sites with additional reclaimed wastewater effluent flow. Regardless of the effluent discharge, BMI, an indicator of ecological stream health using benthic macroinvertebrate species, did not show large gaps between the study points. Although the water quality of the sites downstream of the discharge point was much worse than those upstream, their ecosystem soundness was better than those of the upstream sites from an ecological perspective.

  • To know the effect of desaltation in the reclaimed tidal fields on the succession of vegetation and on the root hair formation of paddy rice, reclaimed fields in Kang Hwa Island, Nam-Yang Bay and Ke-Hwa Island were investigated during summer crop season in 1982. The obtained results can be summarized as followings. l) In the highly salty and water logged areas of reclaimed tidal fields, the first dominating species of higher plant were observed to be Salicornia herbacea L. and Suaeda japonica Makino. With the continued desaltation, Chemopodium virgatum Thumb. occurred in the vegetation. After this transition, the dominating species were composed of Scirpus maitimus L. and Phragmites communis Trin. At the S. maitimus and P. communis dominating salinity level, rice cultivation was safe from the salt damage. 2) In the water logged area, Artemisia capillaria Thunb. and Aster tripolium L. took the place of dominating species after S. herbacea and S. japonica. At this salinity level, graminaceous weeds began to immigrate. 3) In dry areas, Suaeda asparagoides Makino and Suaeda maritima were the first appearing dominant species. Atriplex subcordata Kitakawa was also observed in sucy dry areas, but colony formation was not observed. 4) Plants immigrated slowly into dry areas from the already vegetated water logged areas with the continuation of desaltation. 5) The high soil salinity level affected the root hair formation of rice by reducing both the rate of root hair formation and the length of root hairs.

  • The reclaimed water has been highlighted as a representative alternative to solve the lacking water resources. This study examined the reduction of residual free chlorine by temperature (5, 15, $25^{\circ}C$) and initial injection concentration (1, 2, 4, 6 mg/L) in the reclaimed water and carried out propose on the calculating method of the optimal chlorine dosage. As the reclaimed water showed a very fast reaction with chlorine at the intial time comparing to that of drinking water, the existing general first-order decay model ($C_t=C_o(e^{-k_bt})$) was not suitable for use. Accordingly, the reduction of residual free chlorine could be estimated in a more accurate way as a result of applying the exponential first-order decay model ($C_t=a+b(e^{-k_bt})$). ($r^2$=0.872~0.988). As a result of calculating the bulk decay constant, it showed the highest result at 653 $day^{-1}$ under the condition of 1 mg/L, $25^{\circ}C$ for the initial injection whereas it showed the lowest result at 3.42 $day^{-1}$ under the condition of 6 mg/L, $5^{\circ}C$ for the initial injection. The bulk decay constant tends to increase as temperature increases, whereas the bulk decay constant tends to decrease as the initial injection concentration increases. More accurate calculation for optimal chlorine dosage could be done by using the experimental results for 30~5,040 min, after the entire response time is classified into 0~30 min and 30~5,040 min to calculate the optimal chlorine dosage. In addition, as a result of calculating the optimal chlorine dosage by temperature, the relationships of initial chlorine demand (y) by temperature (x) could be obtained such as y=1.409+0.450x to maintain 0.2 mg/L of residual free chlorine at the time after 4 hours from the chlorine injection.

  • The effect of flooding and soil salinity on the growth of yam (Dioscorea batatas) were studied on the experimantal site temporally established in the south-eastern part of Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land (near Gwanghwal myun, Gimjae-gun, Jellabukdo, Korea). Yam seedlings planted by using aerial bulblet as alternative of sliced tubers, were grown for 20-days and transplanted in black-vinyl mulched ridges (about 20 cm in height) at 70cm interval by $20{\times}60cm$ spacing in the $4^{th}$ of May, 2010. Soil salinity was maintained at lower than 1.2 ds $m^{-1}$ during the growing period and did not result to salt injury in all plants. However, flooding injury very seriously led to plant death and plant mortality rates at $67{\pm}21$ and $82{\pm}9%$ of yam plants in the compost and no compost treatment, respectively, died by heavy flooding during the rainy summer season. The main reasons of the flooding injury included the decreased rainfall acceptable capacity (RAC) after the rising of water table and a slowdown of water infiltration rate after the formation of an impermeable soil crust in the furrow bottom with continuous and heavy downpour during the rainy summer season. The effect of compost treatment was not statistically observed because of the severe spatial difference caused by wet injury, although yam tuber yield was higher at 30 kg $10^{-1}$ in the compost treatment than in the no-compost treatment at 20 kg $10^{-1}$. However, the size of tuber ranged at 1.23 to 1.60 cm in diameter and 3.7 to 5.0 cm in length in all both treatment, which means they are still reproducible for the next cropping season. Conclusively, proper counter-flooding measure and soil salinity control critically important for successful yam production in Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land.

  • The objectives of this study were to assess the rice yields and evaluate fertilizer reduction effect of reclaimed wastewater irrigation in paddy fields using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) v4.5 model. The experimental plots were designed, which was located near the Suwon wastewater treatment plant in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The rice yield, irrigation amount, irrigation water quality and soil data were monitored and collected between 2006 and 2009. The DSSAT model was calibrated and validated with observed data. The methods that were used to evaluate this model were the root mean square error (RMSE), normalized root mean square error (nRMSE), and index of agreement (d). The values of RMSE, nRMSE, and d ranged from 145 to $789\;kg\;ha^{-1}$, 3.0 to 13.3 %, and 0.90 to 0.95 for the calibration period, respectively and represented from 91 to $538\;kg\;ha^{-1}$, 2.0 to 10.4 %, 0.94 to 0.98 for the validation period, respectively. Overall, this model showed good agreement with observed data of rice yields irrigated with reclaimed wastewater. The fertilizer reduction effect in paddy field of reclaimed wastewater irrigation was assessed about 60 % in 2008 and 40 % in 2009.

  • In this test, there was two-dimensional model loading test implemented for analysis with respect to the problem of evaluating bearing capacity and the application range on the dredged and reclaimed ground, so it was possible to get the following result by comparing a result of loading test and an equation proposed previously. When the difference between average undrained shea. strength by (equation omitted)B of loading board width and the strength under. (equation omitted)B is mere than $\pm50%$, the applicability of Nc(coefficient of bearing capacity where $\phi=0$ analysis is considered in the single layer) was declined. As well, using Nc=5.7, 5.14(coeffcient of bearing capacity where $\phi=0$ analysis is applicable to saturated clay without special limit) for evaluating bearing capacity on the dredged and reclaimed ground causes poor applicability, therefore that seem to be applicable when water content is less than about 75% which makes the unconfined compression test possible.
