Currently rebar spacing inspection is carried out by human inspectors who heavily rely on their individual experience, lacking a guarantee of objectivity and accuracy in the inspection process. In addition, if incorrectly placed rebars are identified, the inspector need to correct them. Recently, laser scanning and AR technologies have been widely used because of their merits of measurement accuracy and visualization. This study proposes a technology for rebar spacing inspection and fixing by combining laser scanning and AR technology. First, scan data acquisition of rebar layers is performed and the raw scan data is processed. Second, AR-based visualization and fixing are performed by comparing the design model with the model generated from the scan data. To verify the developed technique, performance comparison test is conducted by comparing with existing drawing-based method in terms of inspection time, error detection rate, cognitive load, and situational awareness ability. It is found from the result of the experiment that the AR-based rebar inspection and fixing technology is faster than the drawing-based method, but there was no significant difference between the two groups in error identification rate, cognitive load, and situational awareness ability. Based on the experimental results, the proposed AR-based rebar spacing inspection and fixing technology is expected to be highly useful throughout the construction industry.
The purpose of the research is to assess the accuracy of steel bar detector among other nondestructive testing equipment. The result of previous research shows that the average errors of rebar detector are 14.7% for the cover depth, 2.3% for the rebar spacing, and 11% for the rebar diameter. But this experiment was performed at the laboratory and the mortar was used for covering the steel bars instead of concrete. In situ condition can be different from the laboratory's so the outcomes do not correspond with those of laboratory. This research was performed at the buildings to be reconstructed. Nondestructive and destructive testing can be performed side by side since the building if to be destroyed. Steel bar detector was operated on the beam and the column and concrete cover of those members was removed for the actual measurement of rebar depth, spacing, and diameter finally, presumed value can be directly compared with actual data.
The 3D scanning technology is being introduced for quality inspection of building construction. Therefore, this study tried to confirm whether it is possible to check the quality of rebar by using 3D scanning. After rebar placed on the formwork slab was scanned with a 3D scanner, the rebar spacing was confirmed by overlapping with the CAD drawing. As a result, the 3D scanner was able to check the quality of rebar work on one floor at a time. Therefore, 3D scanning could be used for quality inspection of rebar works such as columns, beam and girders, walls, and slabs in the future.
In order to achieve structural performance such as rebar clear spacing in the reinforced concrete structure construction, coupler splicing joints are becoming common. To confirm the performance of rebar splicing joints, quality verification is being carried out through coupler specimen tests. However, it can be said that the required performance is reached only when the actual construction in the field is constructed under the same conditions as the coupler splicing joint specimen. Therefore, the problems and solutions of the coupler splicing joint construction of the actual field was investigated in this study.
The purpose of this study is to derive the cause of the quantity difference and present the considerations when take-off rebar quantity based on BIM model by comparing the quantity of rebar based on BIM model with 2D drawing. This research was limited to take-off the quantity of rebars in the building frame work, and after take-off the quantity of rebars by 3D modeling the 2D drawing of the target building with Revit, the quantity difference was compared with 2D-based software. Therefore, when take-off the quantity of rebars based on the BIM model, instead of take-off the existing 2D-based quantity premium proportion, according to general structural consider development length, lap splice length, covering thickness, reinforcing bars and spacing. In the future, this study is expected to contribute to improving the accuracy of BIM-based frame construction quantity take-off.
This research analyzed the factors for crack generation and proposed the recommended construction methods for the efficient crack control of underground RC box structures under the roadway. The selected main factors were: details of contraction joints, ratio of crack control rebars in longitudinla direction, and placement of flyash concrete. These factors were tested on the actual structures and the significance of each factor was analyzed, The results show that the flyash concrete placement and the inducting minor cracks in a certain direction by adopting contraction joints are practical and efficient methods to control cracks. The significance of crack generating factors increases as the sectional loss of contraction joint spacing increase. It was recommeded that the sectional loss should be higher than 20 percent to maximize the crack generating effects. It was not possible to verify the effect of crack control rebar spacing, but it was estimated that the ratio of crack control rebar should be increased to minimize cracks.
In this paper, the effect of different steel bar configurations on the quasi-static punching and impact response of concrete slabs was studied. A total of forty RC square slab specimens were cast in two groups of concrete strengths of 40 and 63 MPa. In each group of twenty specimens, ten specimens were reinforced at the back face (singly reinforced), and the remaining specimens were reinforced on both faces of the slab (doubly reinforced). Two rebar spacing of 25 and 100 mm, with constant reinforcement ratio and effective depth, were used in both singly and doubly reinforced slab specimens. The specimens were tested against the normal impact of cylindrical projectiles of hemispherical nose shape. Slabs were also quasi-statically tested in punching using the same projectile, which was employed for the impact testing. The experimental response illustrates that 25 mm spaced rebars are effective in (i) decreasing the local damage and overall penetration depth, (ii) increasing the absorption of impact energy, and (iii) enhancing the ballistic limit of RC slabs. The ballistic limit was predicted using the quasi-static punching test results of slab specimens showing a strong correlation between the dynamic perforation energy and the energy required for quasi-static perforation of slabs.
PURPOSES : The field application and performance of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP), constructed by using the mechanical tube-feeding method, are evaluated in this study. METHODS: The location of the rebar was evaluated by using the MIRA system. The early-age CRCP performance was evaluated via visual survey, in which the crack spacing and crack width were examined. RESULTS: The location of longitudinal reinforcing bars was evaluated via MIRA testing and the results showed that the longitudinal rebars all lie within a given tolerance limit (${\pm}2.5cm$) of the target elevation. In addition, owing to the low temperature when the concrete was pured, the crack spacing in the Dae-Gu direction is slightly wider than that of the Gwang-Ju direction. Almost all of the crack spacings lay within the range of 1.0 m~3.0 m. A crack width of <0.3 mm was measured at the pavement surface. However, as revealed by the field survey, the crack spacing was not correlated with the crack width. CONCLUSIONS : In CRCP constructed by using the mechanical tube-feeding method, almost all of the longitudinal reinforcing bars lay within the tolerance limit (2.5 cm) of the target elevation. The concrete-placing temperature affects the crack spacing, owing to variations in the zero-stress temperature. Crack survey results show that there is no correlation between the crack spacing and crack width in CRCP.
