  • This study aimed to explore how the Korean university students' reading motivation is related to their English (L2) reading behavior. The construct of the students' Korean (L1) and L2 reading motivation was investigated with the data obtained through the questionnaire from 120 sophomore students. A factor analysis was conducted to extract the major factors of motivation and determine the interrelationship among items in the questionnaire. As a result, 6 factors were extracted: Intrinsic Motivation for English Reading, Extrinsic Motivation 1 (Immediate Goal Orientedness), Extrinsic Motivation 2 (Integrative Orientation), Importance of L1 Reading, Intrinsic Motivation toward L1 reading, and Importance of L2 Reading Skill. The interrelatedness between the assessment results on the L2 reading behavior (reading amount, time and speed) and motivation factors was measured by correlation coefficients. It was found that Intrinsic Motivation toward English Reading was significantly related to the students' reading amount and Intrinsic Motivation toward Korean Reading had positive association with the students' reading time with statistical significance. Other factors did not show significant correlation with the students' reading behavior. In addition, the students' reading speed was significantly related to their reading amount as well, while reading time did not affect the speed gain.

  • Present study was conducted to explore the effect of productive reading habit (PRH) and construal of reading on reading performance, and to identify any psychological differences between those who read continuously and those who do not. For this purpose, 309 adolescents were divided into a group with a lowly level of productive reading habit(PRH) and a group with a highly level of PRH, and a concrete(why) versus abstract(how) construal of reading were primed, and reading performance were investigated for 6 weeks. After that, chi-square analysis and analysis of variance were performed on the collected data. As a result, the group with highly PRH had more days of reading and longer total reading time than the group with lowly PRH. Also, in the group with a highly PRH, the number of days of reading and reading time did not differ according to the construal of reading. On the other hand, the group with a lowly PRH had more reading days and a longer total reading time under the condition of concrete construal of reading than the condition of abstract construal. This study shows that a concrete construal can be helpful in enabling people with lowly productive habit(PH) to initiate a task and maintain concentration to the task.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey colors of background, marker, and pointer being used in passenger car's combination meter, and to suggest ergonomic design guidelines of combination meter to enhance driver's readability. An experiment was conducted, in which colors of background, marker, and pointer were selected as independent variables, and reading time, reading error, and preference for combination meter were measured as dependent variables. Most of passenger cars sold in Korea were found to have combination meter with black background, while marker. The experimental results showed that reading time of combination meter with white background, black marker and point was shortest, reading error was lowest in combination meter with black background, yellow marker pointer, and preference for combination meter with white background, black marker and black or red pointer was highest. The results implied that combination meter with white background, black marker and black pointer should be used for comprehensively optimizing reading time, reading error, and preference for it. It was expected that these results could be used as valuable design guidelines when designing combination meter of passenger car.

  • Purpose: Eye movements and fixation ability are an important procedure to obtain external information and essential means of clear vision. The purpose of this study was to determine the reading performance such as reading time and number of fixations when random text was viewed at varying distances. Methods: Twenty two presbyopes were participated. All subjects were screened for their suitability to participate in the study by clinical examination, and none of the participants had previously worn contact lenses and no previous experience of wearing any types of presbyopic vision correction except single vision. The reading time and number of fixations were recorded using eye tracker while each subjects was waring four vision corrections which included single vision for distance (SV), bifocal spectacle lenses (BIF), progressive addition lenses (PAL), and monovision (MV). The reading material was presented at distance and near distance. Results: Reading time and number of fixations for near stimulus were significantly different among vision correction used in this study (p<0.001). In particular, wearing SV required longer reading time and produced longer fixation duration for near text. However, reading distance text was similarity performed across vision corrections tested and there was no statistical difference found for either reading time and number of fixations. Conclusions: Wearing presbyopic vision correction is advantageous for reading task of near stimuli, but not having near correction such as wearing SV could result in longer reading time and higher number of fixation due to lacks of accommodative ability for near task. For the future studies, it would be interesting to examine the performance of reading both at adapted and unadapted stages as examining only unadapted wearers was limitation of this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills in terms of maternal language behavior in Korean and English picture book reading. This study was also conducted in order to identify the pathways of each factor. The subjects consisted of 201 mothers and their 3~5 year-old children from middle income families living in Seoul, Incheon, Gyyounggi-do, and Chungcheongbuk-do. The results indicated that the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills acquisition were as follows : maternal beliefs about the value of picture book reading, the child's level of interest in picture book reading, the time spent on picture book reading and maternal language behavior during picture book reading activities. The results further indicate that it is important that the mother shares desirable language interaction with her children in their native language while reading not only Korean but also English picture books when aiming to improve preschoolers' emergent English literacy skills.

  • This paper introduces the structure and effects of Kakao's news curation algorithm, which is created based on the Deep Reading Index (DRI). The DRI examines the extent of deep reading through content reading time, that is, the duration of reader engagement with an article. Current news curation algorithms focus on reader choice, with the click-through rate or pageviews as the gauge for consumption frequency. DRI is a product of the challenge of introducing and adopting a new factor called 'consumption time' instead of 'frequency of consumption', which is the basis of existing curation algorithms. The analysis of DRI-based services proves that the new algorithm can act as a curation system that is more effective in providing in-depth and quality news reports.

  • This longitudinal study examined picture book reading practices with very young children and its influence on early intellectual development. The home picture book reading activities of 322 infants and their mothers were assessed by questionnaire every 6 months from 18 months till 42 months of age. Infants' IQ was measured with Korean-Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence(Park et al., 1996) at 42 months. Results showed that monthly book expense (r=.28, p<.01) and infants' asking for reading (r=.14, p<.05) at 18 months were positively correlated with IQ at 42 months. Reading time between 24 and 42 months correlated positively with IQ(r=.17~.34, p<.01). These results reveal the importance of early book environment and actual reading time in the intellectual development of very young children.

  • In the comprehension of English texts, Korean students generally try to translate English into Korean in accordance with the word order of Korean language. As a result, the comprehension of English texts is made in a regressive way, which results in slower reading. In order to enhance the reading speed, it is necessary for students to practice progressive reading. Also, while reading English texts, most readers' eyes tend to look at one word at a time, which actually cuts down on the reading speed. Reading by the sense group of as many words as possible at a glance, however, can help a reader more efficiently in less time. This research aims at developing the Powerpoint program for progressive reading by the sense group according to the student's level. In this program, as for methodology, the technique of rooking it fade-away is introduced to force a reader's eyes to move fast. Through this technique, it is possible to make a line of the texts disappear on the screen and make another line appear, which enables a reader to sweep the words across each and every line of the reading material smoothly without regression.

  • In this paper, a study was conducted to understand how students' attitudes and tendencies toward reading affect the newly emerging coding education. Relevant data were collected by dividing it into three areas (reading, coding, and leisure). In the reading area, data on preference books, preferred types of reading and etc were collected. In the coding area, prior learning of coding, main tasks using a computer, time used for learning and etc were collected. In the leisure area, main leisure activities and hours of spent leisure time per one week were collected. Using the collected data, we classified and analyzed the data based on the preferred reading method to identify the problems of non-major students who have difficulties in coding education. In coding education, the excerpts reading student group showed the best achievement (average 60.1), and the extensive reading group showed the lowest achievement (average 48.4). The students who read extensively spent more time in coding study than the group of students who preferred other reading methods, but showed the lowest achievement.
