  • The hazards associated with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to be recalcitrant by their structure, but white rot fungi are capable of degrading recalcitrant organic compounds. Phlebia brevispora KUC9045 isolated from Korea was investigated its efficiency of degradation of four PAHs, such as phenanthrene, anthracne, fluoranthene, and pyrene. And the species secreted extracellular laccase and MnP (Manganese dependent peroxidase) during degradation. P. brevispora KUC9045 demonstrated effective degradation rates of phenanthrene (66.3%), anthracene (67.4%), fluoranthene (61.6%), and pyrene (63.3%), respectively. For enhancement of degradation rates of PAHs by the species, Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) was preferentially supplemented to induce ligninolytic enzymes. The biodegradation rates of the three PAHs including phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene were improved as higher concentration of Remazol Brilliant Blue R was supplemented. However, anthracene was degraded with the highest rate among four PAHs after two weeks of the incubation without RBBR addition. According to the previous study, RBBR can be clearly decolorized by P. brevispora KUC9045. Hence, the present study demonstrates simultaneous degradation of dye and PAHs by the white rot fungus. And it is considered that the ligninolytic enzymes are closely related with the degradation. In addition, it indicated that dye waste water might be used to induce ligninolytic enzymes for effective degradation of PAHs.

  • Background: Although the mortality rate in cancers has been decreased recently, it is still one of the leading causes of death in most of the countries. This study analyzed the relationship between surgery volume and in hospital mortality of cancer patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship in Korean healthcare environment and to provide information for the policy development in reducing cancer mortality. Methods: The study sample was the 20,517 cancer patients who underwent surgery and discharged during a month period between 2008-2011. The data were collected in Patient Survey by Korean Institute of Social Affairs. Logistic regression was used to analyse a comprehensive analytic model that includes a binary dependent variable indicating death discharge and independent variables such as surgery volume, organizational characteristics of hospitals, socio-economical characteristics of the patients, and severity of disease indicators. Results: In chi-square test, as the surgery volume increases, the in-hospitals mortality showed a downward trends. In regression analysis, the relationship between surgery volume and mortality showed significant negative associations in all types of cancer except for pancreatic cancer. Conclusion: In the absence of other information patients undergoing cancer surgery can reduce their risk of operative death by selecting a high-volume hospital. Therefore, policies to enhance centralization of cancer surgery services should be considered.

  • Cubic boron nitride(c-BN) films were deposited on tungsten carbide insert tool by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(MPECVD) from a gas mixture of triethyl borate$(B(C_2H_5O)_3)$, ammonia $(NH_3)$, hydrogen$(H_2)$ and argon(Ar). The qualities of deposited thin film were investigated by x-ray diffrac-tion(XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and micro Raman spectroscope. The surface morphologies of the synthesised BN as well as crystallinity appear to be highly dependent on the flow rate of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases. The deposited film had more crystallized phases with 5 scem of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases than with 2 sccm, and the phase was identified as c-BN by micro Raman spectroscope and XRD. The adhesion strength were also increased with increasing flow rates of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases.

  • Aerosol hygroscopic properties were measured by a tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA) system during the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE)-Asia campaign from 31 March to 1 May 2001. Two high flow differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) were used to maximize the count rate on board the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft (CIRPAS) Twin Otter aircraft. Hygroscopic growth factor distributions of particles having initial dry nanoparticle diameters of 0.040, 0.059, 0.086, 0.126, 0.186, 0.273, 0.400, and $0.586{\mu}m$ were measured during 19 research flights. Data collected during 12 of those flights were used to investigate aerosol mixing state and the influence of aerosol source region on size-resolved hygroscopicity. The uniformity in size-resolved hygroscopicity was quantified to facilitate comparison between measurements made in different air masses. Hygroscopic growth factors are strongly dependent on source region and sizes. Mean hygroscopic growth factors were observed to be greatest when the air mass origin was from the south. The mean growth factors for continental sources decreased with initial size from 1.47 to 1.27 for $0.040{\mu}m\;and\;0.586{\mu}m$, but increased with initial size from 1.44 to 1.8 for $0.040{\mu}m\;and\;0.400{\mu}m$ dry diameters for marine sources.

  • Hatching occurred in the time dependent manners and strictly controlled. Although, the hatching processes are under the control of muti-embryotrophic factors and the expressed G proteins of cell generate integrated activation, the knowledge which GPCRs are expressed during hatching stage embryos are very limited. In the present study, which G proteins are involved was examined during blastocyst development to the hatching stage. The early-, expanded-, and lobe-stage blastocysts were treated with various $G_{\alpha}$ activators and H series inhibitors, and examined developmental patterns. Pertusis toxin (PTX) improved the hatching rate of the early-stage blastocyst and lobe-formed embryos. Cholera toxin (CTX) suppressed the hatching of the early-stage blastocyst and expanded embryos. The effects of toxins on hatching and embryo development were changed by the H7 and H8. These results mean that PTX mediated GPCRs activation is signaling generator in the nick or pore formation in the ZP. In addition, PTX mediated GPCR activation induces the locomotion of trophectoderm for the escaping. CTX mediate GPCRs activation is the cause of suppression of hatching processes. Based on these data, it is suggested that various GPCRs are expressed in the periimplantation stage embryos and the integration of the multiple signals decoding of various signals in a spatial and temporal manner regulate the hatching process.

  • Hyperthermal ion/surface collisions of bromotoluene radical cations were studied using perfluorinated (F-SAM) and hydroxyl-terminated (OH-SAM) self-assembled monolayer surfaces in a tandem mass spectrometer with BEEQ geometry. The isomers were differentiated by ion abundance ratios taken from surface-induced dissociation (SID). The dissociation rate followed the order of ortho > meta > para isomers. The peak abundance ratio of m/z 51 to m/z 65 showed the best result to discern the isomers. A dissociation channel leading to tolylium ion was suggested to be responsible for the pronounced isomeric differences. The capability of SID to provide high-energy activation with narrow internal energy distribution may have channeled the reaction into the specific dissociation pathway, also facilitating small differences in reaction rates to be effective in the spectral time window of this experiment. All of the molecular ions experiencing reactive collisions with the F-SAM surface undergo transhalogenation, in which a fluorine atom on the surface replaces the bromine in the incoming ions. This reactive collision was dependent on the laboratory collision energy occurring in ca. 40.75 eV range.

  • This study investigated the effects of a low-voltage ohmic heating process (2.5 and 3.8 V/cm) on the thawing characteristics and NaCl diffusion of pork. The thawing rate of pork was dependent on the applied voltages and brine salinities, and few differences were obtained in pork quality parameters (color, water-holding capacity, and shear force) regarding the different treatments. The NaCl concentration of pork after ohmic thawing was higher than that following brine-immersion thawing, however, the NaCl diffusion did not differ from when fresh meat was immersed in brine. For application of the ohmic process in fresh pork, various ohmic pulses were generated in order to prevent the meat from overheating, and the results indicated that the ohmic process was a better way to enhance NaCl diffusion compared with immersing pork at high temperature. Although the mechanisms involved in NaCl diffusion at low-voltage electric field strength were unclear, the present study demonstrated that the ohmic process has a potential benefit in the application of meat processing.

  • This paper is concerned with type of imperfections present within the anodic oxide films on AA2024 and surface hardness of the anodic film measured after ink-impregnation. The anodic oxide films were formed for 25 min at 40 mA/㎠ and 15±0.5℃ and 300 rpm of magnet stirring rate in 20% sulfuric acid solution. The ink-impregnation allows clear observations of not only the imperfections within the anodic oxide films but also an indentation mark on the oxide film surface made by a pyramidal-diamond penetrator for the hardness measurement. There were observed four different regions in the anodic oxide films on AA2024 and the surface hardness of the anodic oxide films appeared to be crucially dependent on the type of defects, showing 60~100 Hv on the oxide surface region I with large size black defect, 100~140 Hv on the oxide surface region II with large size grey defect, 140~170 Hv on the oxide surface region III with mall size black and/or grey defects and 170~190 Hv on the oxide surface region IV without defects. The pyramidal indentation marks were observed to be distorted in the regions with a large size black and grey defects, while no distortion of the indentation mark was observed in the regions with small size defects and without visible defects.

  • Textured CeO2 buffer layers for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on biaxially textured Ni substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The degree of texture of deposited $CeO_2$ films was strong1y dependent on the deposition temperature (Td) and oxygen Partial Pressure(PO2). ($\ell$00) textured $CeO_2$ films were well deposited at T=500~52$0^{\circ}C$. PO2=0.90~3.33 Torr. The surface morphology showed that the films consisted of columnar CeO2 films grown from the Ni substrates. The root mean square roughness of CeO$_2$ films estimated by atomic force microscopy(AFM) increased as the deposition temperature(Td) increa- sed. The growth rate of the $CeO_2$ films deposited at T=52$0^{\circ}C$ and PO2=2.30 Torr was 150~200 nm/min that was much faster than that of other Physical deposition methods.

  • The microbial immobilization media with curdlan and activated carbon which has great immobilization capacity has been developed. Characteristics of porosity and mechanical strength of this support media are dependent on manufacturing method. The support media showed the best cell immobilization performance when the ratio of curdlan and activated carbon was 30 g/L to 6 g/L in this study. The immobilization of iron-oxidizing bacteria on the supporting particles was photographed with a scanning electron microscope. Since cell concentration on the surface of supporting particle increased with the reaction time, the iron oxidation rate also increased.
