  • To investigate alleviation effects of salt stress by low dose gamma-irradiation on seedling growth of rice (Oryza shrive L), in plants of two rice cultivars (Ilpumbyeo and Gancheokbyeo), seeds were irradiated with the different doses $(0{\sim}32\;Gy)$ of gamma-ray by irradiator ($^{60}Co$, ca.150 TBq of capacity, AECL). The salt stress caused a remarkable decrease of seedling growth, particularly for dry weight. In addition, relative growth rate was decreased over 50% by the salt stress. However, the salt stress-induced inhibition of growth was alleviated by gamma-irradiation. Especially, the relative growth rate of shoot showed the reduction effect over 30% at 4 Gy-irradiated groups as compared with that of control. Also, electrolyte leakage and relative water content were damaged, respectively 4 times and 30% by the salt stress but the damages were alleviated by the gamma-irradiation. These alleviation effects were observed similarly in both the cultivars tested. These results suggest that the low dose gamma-irradiation may have a better protection or the salt stress.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of multi-user detectors employing SIC(Successive Interference Cancellation) and PIC (Parallel Interference Cancellation) which are the representative schemes in the subtractive interference cancellation. We have considered the MUD structure employing HIC (Hybrid Interference Cancellation) which combines SIC with PIC scheme, and then analyzed the BER performance. We have evaluated the BER performance of SIC and HIC schemes which execute the soft decision to generate the tentative data bit for the purpose of the interference cancellation in MAI and noise environments. Through the numerical analysis and computer simulation, it is shown that HIC can remove the effect of MAI more efficiently than the others, that improve the BER performance and increase the capacity of DS-CDMA systems regardless of the power control conditions. The reason is that the SIC scheme in front of HIC can solve the near-far problem caused by the imperfect power control and PIC scheme in the rear of it can improve the performance much more.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop model for estimating biodegrability of organic sludge (sewage and papermill) in various environmental conditions. to assume degradable degree with operating time of SRB reactor. and evaluate duratior of organic sludge as carbon source. Average TCOD was 28.7~63.2mg/L in effluent. organic sludge did not much supply carbon source for experimental period. But in point of durability. it seemed that organic sludge was efficient because it was not consumed by degradation of much organic matter within short period. With increasing $SO_4{^{2-}}$ reduction rate. Pb and Fe was removed 77~82% and 33~59%. respectively. Because Al was precipitated as a hydroxide. its removal rate wa,. about $54{\pm}2%$ in R-l~R-3 maintaining low pH but about 78% in R-4 maintaining high pH. Because Mn was large in solubility. it showed to be much lower than other heavy metals. Considering supportable capacity or durability of orgainc matter for initial SRB mixing ratio of sewage/papermill 0.5 was regarded as appropriate substituting material and at this time. it estimated that carbon source continued about 3.08 year but safety factor must apply to be thought over. because various factors had an effect on degradation of organic sludge.

  • The purpose of the present study is first to refine the mathematical material models for moisture and temperature distributions in early-age concrete and then to incorporate those models into finite element procedure. The three dimensional finite element program developed in the present study can determine the degree of hydration, temperature and moisture distribution in hardening concrete. It is assumed that temperature and humidity fields are fully uncoupled and only the degree of hydration is coupled with two state variables. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration Is based on the combination of three rate functions of reaction. The effect of moisture condition as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. In moisture transfer, diffusion coefficient is strongly dependent on the moisture content in pore system. Many existing models describe this phenomenon according to the composition of mixture, especially water to cement ratio, but do not consider the age dependency. Microstructure is changing with the hydration and thus transport coefficients at early ages are significantly higher because the pore structure in the cement matrix is more open. The moisture capacity and sink are derived from age-dependent desorption isotherm. Prediction of a moisture sink due to the hydration process, i.e. self-desiccation, is related to autogenous shrinkage, which may cause early-age cracking in high strength and high performance concrete. The realistic models and finite element program developed in this study provide fairly good results on the temperature and moisture distribution for early-age concrete and correlate very well with actual test data.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of functional cover film on oriental melon fruit quality under unheated plastic greenhouse cultivation in cold period. The 6 kind of films having different characteristics were covered at plastic greenhouses and oriental melon seedlings were cultivated at 2 regions of Seongju, respectively. The air-temperatures in plastic greenhouses of J-1 and J-2, having high infrared absorption rate, were about $2{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ higher than K-3. The contents of ${\beta}-carotene$ and sugar of fruit showed significant difference between functional and normal films. The sucrose, determining a sweetness during maturation, and soluble solids content of fruits cultivated in J-1, J-2, J-3, and K-1 were higher than those of K-2 and K-3. Ascorbic acid of fruits was highest in K-2 having low light transmission rate and thermo-keeping capacity. There was no significant difference in mineral content among all of cover films. These results indicated that the use of functional greenhouse covering films could improve fruit quality such as ${\beta}-carotene$ and sugar content of oriental melon.

  • The control system architecture in switching systems have undergone numerous changes to provide various call processing capability needed in telecommunication services. During call processing in a distributed switching control environment, the delay effect due to communication among main processors or peripheral controllers is one of the limiting factors which affect the system performance. In this paper, we propose a performance model for an IPC(Inter Processor Communication) interface hardware block which is required on the ATM cell-based message processing in a distributed ATM exchange system, and analyze the primary causes which affect the processor performance through the simulation. Consequently, It can be shown that the local CPU of the several components(resources) related to the IPC scheme is a bottleneck factor in achieving the maximum system performance from the simulation results, such as the utilization of each processing component according to the change of the input message rate, and the queue length and processing delay according to input message rate. And we also give some useful results such as the maximum message processing capacity according to the change of the performance of local CPU, and the local CPU maximum throughput according to the change of average message length, which is applicable as a reference data for the improvement or expansion of the ATM control system.

  • Rates of photosynthesis and respiration of Laminaria japonica sporophytes cultivated on the southeastern coast of Korea were monthly measured in situ and under constant temperature and nitrogen concentration in laboratory from February to July 1996 in order to understand the seasonal photosynthetic performance of this alga. P-I (the relationship between photosynthsis and irradiance) parameters measured in situ varied seasonally. Photosynthetic capacity ($P_{max}$) reached its maximum in March (6.64 mg $O_2{\cdot}gdw^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$) and gradually decreased thereafter. Photosynthetic efficiency (${\alpha}$), which ranged from 0.026 to 0.106, generally showed a similar pattern with the $P_{max}$, curve. Correlation between respiration and $P_{max}$, was not significant (Spearman's rank correlation, p>0.05); respiration rate, which varied between 0.25 and 0.83 mg $O_2{\cdot}gdw^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, showed no gradual decline from March. $P_{max}$ in situ significantly correlated with the relative growth rate of frond weight (Spearman's rank correlation, p<0.01) and this result means that the amount of accumulated materials in body increased with the increment of $P_{max}$. Compared $P_{max}$, in situ with that in the laboratory. The lower $P_{max}$ in February was probably caused by the effect of lower seawater temperature at this time. The decrease in $P_{max}$ after March, however, was primarily attributable to the thickness of blade as the plants got old. Comparison of P-I parameters measured for different size groups in April, explained the negative relationship between $P_{max}$ and frond thickness.

  • The practical design method on sandmat uses a drain length, rate of consolidation settlement and permeability of sand as a major design factors. And, on the basis of this design process, it has been installed beneath the embankment with same thickness. However, the possibility the underestimation on the thickness of sandmat and the delayed drain have been pointed out by several authors caused by a differential settlement at the center and the end of embankment. In this study, therefore, the effect of the differential settlement on the thickness of sandmat and delayed drain through the numerical analysis of embankment was analyzed. As a result, a substantial sandmat thickness becomes small and the possibility of the delayed drain can be certified because of the development of differential settlement at the center and ends of embankment. As a countermeasure to overcome this problem, the applicability of the mound type sandmat was also investigated by the numerical method. It can be concluded that it maintains the designated substantial sandmat thickness throughout consolidation process, and is useful method to maintain the drain capacity. Especially, the mound type sandmat is effective method for a construction site where can cause a differential settlement such as embankment. Furthermore, it has to be designed on the basis of the accurate prediction of consolidation settlement as well as rate of consolidation settlement, drain length and permeability of sand.

  • Recently, in construction equipment machinery production, development has focused on environmentally-friendly functions to improve existing production capacity. For excavators as well, emphasis has been placed on response to environmental regulations, miniaturization, and noise reduction, while technology is being developed considering cost reduction and safety.Accordingly, the front support, an inner reinforcement part of the excavator, as well as high-strength steel plates to improve safety and reduce weight, are being applied. However, in the case of high-strength materials, Springback occurs in the final formed part due to high residual stress during product forming. Derivation of a forming or product shaping process to reduce springback is needed. Accordingly, regarding the front support, an inner reinforcement part of the excavator, this study derived a method to improve springback and secure shape stiffness through analysis of the springback occurrence rate and springback causes through a forming analysis. As for the results of analyzing the springback occurrence rate of existing products through forming analysis, springback of -22.6 mm < z < 27.35 mm occurred on the z-axis, and it was confirmed that springback occurred due to the stiffness reinforcing bead of the upper and middle parts of the product. To control product residual stress and springback, we confirmed a tendency of springback reduction through local pre-cutting and stiffness reinforcement bead relocation. In the local pre-cutting model, springback was slightly reduced by 5.3% compared with the existing model, an insignificant reduction effect. In the stiffness reinforcement bead relocation model, when an X-shaped stiffness reinforcement bead was added to each corner portion of the product, springback was reduced by at least 80%.The X-shaped bead addition model was selected as the springback reduction model, and the level of stiffness compared to the existing model was confirmed through a structural analysis. The X-shaped bead additional model showed a stress springback of 90% and springback reduction of 7.4% compared with the existing model, indicating that springback and stiffness will be reinforced.

  • The variation of the hydrogen-storage properties of Mg contained in the mechanically-allyed mixture with the weight percentage of nickel in the sample is investigated. The weight percentage of nickel transformed into the Mg2Ni phase, on the basis of the nickel weight, is highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. For the first hydriding cycle, the effect of mechanical alloying on the hydriding rate of Mg is highest in the Mg-25 wt.%Ni sample. After activation, the effects of mechanical alloying and hydriding-dehydriding cycling on the hydriding rate of Mg are highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. After sufficient hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the effects on the hydrogen-storage capacity of Mg are highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. The effects on the hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg are highest in the Mg-25wt.%Ni sample. Mg-25wt.%Ni, followed by Mg-10 wt.%Ni, is the optimum composition which has the best effects on the hydrogen-storage properties of Mg contained in the sample. The mechanical alloying and the hydriding-dehydriding cycling produce many defects, which can act as active nucleation sites, and increase the specific surface area, shortening the diffusion distance of hydrogen.
