Fundamental understanding of vanadium ion transport and the detrimental effects of cross-contamination on vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) performance is critical for developing low-cost, robust, and highly selective proton-conducting membranes for VRFBs. The objective of this work is to examine the effect of conductivity and diffusivity, two key membrane parameters, on long-cycle performance of a VRFB at different operating conditions using a transient 2D multi-component model. This single-channel model combines the transport of vanadium ions, chemical reactions between permeated ions, and electrochemical reactions. It has been discovered that membrane selecting criterion for long cycles depends critically on current density and operating voltage range of the cell. The conducted simulation work is also designed to study the synergistic effects of the membrane properties on dynamics of VRFBs as well as to provide general guidelines for future membrane material development.
We report the distributions of Sb and As in the surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea. The mean concentrations of Sb and As range from 0.68 ppm to 1.01 ppm and from 7.4 ppm to 15.8 ppm, respectively, and show relatively the high concentrations at the coast of Weolseong in the East Sea for Sb and at the coast of Gadeok Island in the South Sea far As. This may be due to the anthropogenic input of these elements via river and atmosphere from industry complex and agriculture regions around the study areas. Because of the difference of clay to silt proportion, the correlation between silt plus clay contents and Sb, As in the coastal surface sediment of Korea is not shown, the concentrations of Sb and As vary widely for the sample in which the silt plus clay contents are the same. Therefore, we suggest that the distribution patterns of Sb and As in surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are mainly controlled by the anthropogenic inputs and the sediment characteristics. On the other hand, the Sb concentrations are lower than those of the lowest effect level which is the standard of judgment for contamination, while the As concentrations are higher than those of the lowest effect level. This implies that the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are considerably contaminated for As.
Heavy metal accumulation in living organisms through food-wed can give serious damage on physiological responses for vital activities. The initiation of heavy metal supposed to begin from the bio-accumulation of plants. To establish basic data fur heavy metal contents in plants at the area without artificial contamination, both woody and herb plants at Mt. Kwang-Duk were studied. The content of heavy metals in various organs of plants were analyzed by ICP. The range of heavy metals in plants for Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe. Mn, Pb, Se and Zn were 1.019∼257.200ppm, O∼2.929ppm, 0∼0.079ppm, 0∼0.054ppm, 0.023∼3.007ppm, 0∼1.997ppm, 2.031∼148.500ppm, 1.069∼51.320ppm, O∼126.900ppm, 0.708∼4.927ppm and 0.846∼4.949ppm, respectively. The amount of heavy metals in plants are much less than that of soil except some species. In woody plants, it was detected that the metal contents of leaves were higher than that of stems especially in case of Al and Fe with statistical significance. There were significant differences between shoots and roots of herb plants in metal content of Al, Co and Fe. Those metals have more accumulated in roots comparing with shoots. Some species of plants had shown the difference tendency of heavy metal accumulation. Generally, most species had not exceeded over twice of mean value each other, and had various difference according to the kinds of heavy metals.
In order to investigate the effect of internal loading from sediment on algal blooming at Chusori area in Daechung Reservoir, the amount and contamination level of sediment and the release rate of total phosphorus were analyzed. The sedimentary layer was consisted with two layers, and the average depth of upper and lower ones were 0.35 and 1.44 m, respectively. The fraction of inorganic phosphorus in the sediment was higher than that of organic phosphorus, and the fractions of phosphorus which responsible for internal loading were very high as in the range of 72.7 and 80.2% of inorganic phosphorus. The C/N ratio of sediment taken with core sampler indicated the organic compounds are originated from settled algae from water body. The average release rate of total phosphorus from sediment was $6.74({\pm}0.50)mg/m^2/day$. These results indicated that the internal loading from sediment contributes the excessive algal growth at Churosi area, and the countermeasures to improve the quality of sediments are required to manage algal blooming in Daechung Reservoir.
Although waste oil derived fuel (WDF) production technology was developed under a government initiative ~10 years ago, it became stagnant owing to the small size of participating companies, residents' rejection of foul odor, and the nature of the technology for recycling waste that was avoided. However, this subject is under the spotlight again because of recent developments, such as garbage crisis. In particular, plastic is the most difficult waste to dispose of, with more than 4 million tons of plastic waste produced every year according to statistics from the Ministry of Environment. The most effective method for treating plastic waste is to produce WDF through low temperature thermal decomposition. The WDF includes several volatile ingredients that mostly limit the use of fuel for boilers, owing to safety concerns. In particular, flash point is legally stipulated because of secondary contamination in the distribution process and the risk of fire and explosion. It is required that external shipments (distribution) should be maintained in the range of at least 30~60℃ (excluding explosion prevention facilities) for diesel power generation. Therefore, this study seeks to find the flash point that is best suited to WDFs produced from plastic waste.
The last few decades have seen drastic growth in the use of brominated flame retardants(BFRs). There is the problems of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins(PBDDS) and polybrominated dibenzofurans(PBDFs) generation as by-products in combustion process of BFRs. PBDDs/PBDFs are highlighted the new pollutants of environmental contamination, recently. In this study, the 10 kinds of PBDDs/PBDFs standards were used to perform the experiments of recoveries. The analysis of PBDDs/PBDFs in soil environmental samples. was carried out. In silica gel column cleanup, PBDDs/PBDFs eluted until 80mL of n-hexane, and the recovery was obtained 73∼105%. In multi-layer silica gel column cleanup, the recovery was obtained 56∼125% with various elution solvents. In alumina clean process, the standard mixture(PBDES, PBDDs/PBDFs) eluted the first fraction of 2% dichloromethane with n-hexane in the range of 0∼100mL, PBDEs compounds eluted in the second fraction of 50% dichloromethane with n-hexane. In activated carbon column cleanup, the PBBEs eluted to the first fraction(n-hexane) and second fraction(toluene), but PBDDs/PBDFs only eluted to the second fraction. The analytical methods of PBDDs/PBDFs for soil was established based on the experimental results of the environmental samples.

[ $CO_2$ ]laser ablation rates for bulk 4H-SiC substrates and GaN/AIN/SiC templates in the range 229-870 ${\mu}m.min^{-1}$ were obtained for pulse energies of 7.5-30 mJ over diameters of 50·500 ${\mu}m$ with a Q-switched pulse width of ${\sim}30$ nsec and a pulse frequency of 8 Hz. The laser drilling produces much higher etch rates than conventional dry plasma etching (0.2 - 1.3 ${\mu}m/min$) making this an attractive maskless option for creating through-wafer via holes in SiC or GaN/AlN/SiC templates for power metal-semiconductor field effect transistor applications. The via entry can be tapered to facilitate subsequent metallization by control of the laser power and the total residual surface contamination can be minimized in a similar fashion and with a high gas throughput to avoid redeposition. The sidewall roughness is also comparable or better than conventional via holes created by plasma etching.
Measurement of electrical resistivity in soils has been used for many years with purpose of estimating in situ porosity or density. Recently electrical resistivity has also been used as an indicator of soil contaimination. This paper presents the result of laboratory experiment to investigate the resistivity variation in contaminated sandy soils. The results can be used with the Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT) result to analyse ground condition. In the experiment, the water content and leachate concentration of soils were controlled by groundwater and leachate, and then the resistivity measurement was made with 'STING-R1' by Advanced Geosciences Inc. In the case of using groundwater, the resistivity was in the range of over 1000${\omega}{\cdot}m$, but in the case of using polluted water by leachate, the resistivity decreased significantly down to 10~ 100${\omega}{\cdot}m$ for the same moisture content. Also the resistivity varied according to the degree of saturatrion. Therefore, if soil is contaminated by leachate, the CPT with electrical resistivity sensor might be used to investigate the contamination status and plume migration. But exact component of leachate and the pollutant concentration are still hard to identify.
Hydraulic conductivity is an important parameter, representing permeable property of the groundwater in aquifers, in the issues of groundwater development, groundwater contamination, and groundwater flow, etc. We estimated a relationship between hydraulic conductivity and electrical properties (formation factor, chargeability, and time constant) of silty sand in the laboratory. For this study, we conducted grain size analysis, constant head permeameter test, and measured electrical resistivity and spectral induced polarization of silty sand samples collected from the riverside alluvium of the Nakdong River in Nogok-ri area, Dasan-myeon, Goryeong-gun in Gyeongbook Province, Korea. In the laboratory test, we used soil samples of approximately uniform porosity with 0.5% error range, and kept the electrical resistivity of pore water with 100 ohm-m. As a result, the relationship between effective particle size and hydraulic conductivity agrees fairly well with the existing empirical formulas. Hydraulic conductivity was correlated with formation factor, chargeability, and time constant: hydraulic conductivity increased with increasing formation factor and time constant as well as with decreasing chargeability.

As a part of efforts to establish the positive list system (PLS) in South Korea, a method to determine residual emamectin benzoate (EB) in various aquatic products using QuEChERS-EDTA and LC-MRM was developed. The developed method was validated in the aspects of specificity, linearity (correlation coefficient of at least 0.996), sensitivity (the limit of detection and the lower limit of quantitation ${\leq}5ng/g$), recovery (the recovery range of 87.4 and 96.2), and precision (the relative standard deviation of recovery between 0.9 and 13.5). Additionally, the validated method was successfully applied for monitoring EB contamination in eel, halibut, and shrimp collected from local food markets. To our knowledge, the present method is the first one to determine residual EB in various aquatic products at the level satisfying the PLS and could contribute to the establishment of the PLS in South Korea.
