Real Time Motion Processing for Autonomous Navigation

  • An overview of our approach to autonomous navigation is presented showing how motion information can be integrated into existing navigation schemes. Particular attention is given to our short range motion estimation scheme which utilises a number of unique assumptions regarding the nature of the visual environment allowing a direct fusion of visual and range information. Graduated non-convexity is used to solve the resulting non-convex minimisation problem. Experimental results show the advantages of our fusion technique.

  • This paper presents a digitally speed sensorless control system for induction motor with direct torque control (DTC). The drive is based on Mode1 Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) using state observer as a reference model fat flux estimation. The system are closed loop stator flux and torque observer for wide speed range that inputs are currents and voltages sensing of motor terminal, model reference adaptive control (MRAS) with rotor flux linkages for the speed turning aignal at low speed range, two hysteresis controllers. The Proposed system is verified through simulation.

  • A sensor fusion scheme for mobile robot environment recognition that incorporates range data and contour data is proposed. Ultrasonic sensor provides coarse spatial description but guarantees open space with no obstacle within sonic cone with relatively high belief. Laser structured light system provides detailed contour description of environment but prone to light noise and is easily affected by surface reflectivity. Overall fusion process is composed of two stages: Noise elimination and belief updates. Dempster Shafer´s evidential reasoning is applied at each stage.   • This paper presents an adaptive receding horizon H$_{\infty}$ controller for the linear parameter varying systems in the deterministic environment, which combines a parameter range estimator and a robust receding horizon H$_{\infty}$ controller using the parameter bounds. Using parameter set inclusion and terminal inequality condition, the closed-loop system stability is guaranteed. It is shown that the stabilizing adaptive receding horizon H$_{\infty}$ controller guarantees the H$_{\infty}$ norm bound.

  • A new 2-D block Kalman filtering method which uses a nonlinear function is presented to generate a more accurate filtered estimate of a range image that has been corrupted by additive noise. Novel 2-D block Kalman filtering method is constructed of the conventional method and nonlinear function which utilizes to control estimation error. We show that novel 2-D Kalman filtering method using a nonlinear function is effective at reducing the additive noise, not distorting shape edges.

국내 연안어선의 유효마력 추정에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effective Horsepower Estimation for Domestic Coastal Fishing Vessels)

  • As the hull form of Korean fishing vessels is different from that of Japanese fishing vessels, the statistical regression analysis results of the resistance estimation for the Japanese fishing vessels is not able to be employed for the Korean fishing vessels just as it is. In this paper, it is introduced to an effective horsepower estimation method for the Korean domestic coastal fishing vessels, which is based on the statistical regression analysis of the model test results of the Japanese fishing vessels and the adjustment of those regression factors using the hull form data and model test results of Korean fishing vessels. The estimation results of the effective horsepower using the present prediction method are compared with experimental data. The comparison results show good agreements in the conventional speed range of fishing vessels.

Bearing Estimation of Narrow Band Acoustic Signals Using Cardioid Beamforming Algorithm in Shallow Water

  • This paper suggests the Cardioid beamforming algorithm of the doublet sensors employing DIFAR (directional frequency analysis and recording) sensor signals in the frequency domain. The algorithm enables target bearing estimation using the signals from directional sensors. The algorithm verifies its applicability by successfully estimating bearings of a target projecting ten narrow-band signals in shallow water. The estimated bearings agree very well with those from GPS (global positioning system) data. Assuming the bearings from GPS data to be real values, the estimation errors are analyzed statistically. The histogram of estimation errors in each frequency have Gaussian shape, the mean and standard deviation dropping in the ranges -1.1°∼ 6.7°and 13.3∼43.6°, respectively. Estimation errors are caused by SNR (signal to noise ratio) degradation due to propagation loss between the source and receiver, daily fluctuating geo-magnetic fields, and non-stationary background noises. If multiple DIFAR systems are employed, in addition to bearing, range information could be estimated and finally localization or tracking of a target is possible.

  • State-of-charge (SOC) is one of the significant indicators to estimate the driving range of the electric vehicle and to control the alternator of the conventional engine vehicles as well. Therefore its precise estimation is crucial not only for utilizing the energy effectively but also preventing critical situations happening to the power train and lengthening the lifetime of the battery. However, lead-acid battery is time-variant, highly nonlinear, and the hysteresis phenomenon causes large errors in estimation SOC of the battery especially under the frequent discharge/charge. This paper proposes a novel estimation technique for the SOC of the Lead-Acid battery by using a well-known Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and an electrical equivalent circuit model of the Lead-Acid battery considering diffusion and hysteresis characteristics. The diffusion is considered by the reconstruction of the open circuit voltage decay depending on the rest time and the hysteresis effect is modeled by calculating the normalized integration of the charge throughput during the partial cycle. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through the experiments.

  • Demand for high-rising building has arisen. However, its maintenance is usually executed by labour. It could have a severe problem. We proposed a gondola robot to solve it. In this paper, we designed a height estimation sensor for this gondola. It is consist of pan-tilt unit, ARS sensor, and laser sensor. The pan-tilt unit keeps the laser sensor to indicate the gravity direction by referencing the ARS. The laser sensor's range is vertical distance from gondola to ground. However, if there is an obstacle under the gondola, the distance includes its height. To filter it out, we apply a Kalman filter for the height estimation. If the estimated height is changed extremely, the filter decides that there is an obstacle. Then, it remembers the height of obstacle. Other extreme changes of height estimations are reflected. The experimental results using the proposed sensor system show detail flow of the height estimation.

  • This paper provides the fully plastic J solutions for circumferential cracked pipes with inner, semi- elliptical surface cracks, subject to internal pressure and global bending. Solutions are given in the form of two different approaches, the GEF/EPRl approach and the reference stress approach. For the GE/EPRl approach, the plastic influence functions for fully plastic J are tabulated based on extensive 3-D FE calculations using the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) materials, covering a wide range of pipe and crack geometries. The developed GEf/EPRl-type fully plastic J estimation equations are then re-formulated using the concept of the reference stress approach for wider applications. Based on the FE results, optimized reference load solutions for the definition of the reference stress are found for internal pressure and for global bending. Advantages of the reference stress based approach over the GE/EPRl-type approach are fully discussed. Validation of the proposed reference stress based J estimation equations will be given in Part II, based on 3-D elastic-plastic or elastic creep FE results using typical tensile properties of stainless steels and generalized creep- deformation behaviours.
