This paper aims to compare three collocation point methods associated with the odd order stochastic response surface method (SRSM) in a systematical and quantitative way. The SRSM with the Hermite polynomial chaos is briefly introduced first. Then, three collocation point methods, namely the point method, the root method and the without origin method underlying the odd order SRSMs are highlighted. Three examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the three methods. The results indicate that the condition that the Hermite polynomial information matrix evaluated at the collocation points has a full rank should be satisfied to yield reliability results with a sufficient accuracy. The point method and the without origin method are much more efficient than the root method, especially for the reliability problems involving a large number of random variables or requiring complex finite element analysis. The without origin method can also produce sufficiently accurate reliability results in comparison with the point and root methods. Therefore, the origin often used as a collocation point is not absolutely necessary. The odd order SRSMs with the point method and the without origin method are recommended for the reliability analysis due to their computational accuracy and efficiency. The order of SRSM has a significant influence on the results associated with the three collocation point methods. For normal random variables, the SRSM with an order equaling or exceeding the order of a performance function can produce reliability results with a sufficient accuracy. The order of SRSM should significantly exceed the order of the performance function involving strongly non-normal random variables.
Identifying disease genes from human genome is a critical task in biomedical research. Important biological features to distinguish the disease genes from the non-disease genes have been mainly selected based on traditional feature selection approaches. However, the traditional feature selection approaches unnecessarily consider many unimportant biological features. As a result, although some of the existing classification techniques have been applied to disease gene identification, the prediction performance was not satisfactory. A small set of the most important biological features can enhance the accuracy of disease gene identification, as well as provide potentially useful knowledge for biologists or clinicians, who can further investigate the selected biological features as well as the potential disease genes. In this paper, we propose a new stepwise random forests (SRF) approach for biological feature selection and disease gene identification. The SRF approach consists of two stages. In the first stage, only important biological features are iteratively selected in a forward selection manner based on one-dimensional random forest regression, where the updated residual vector is considered as the current response vector. We can then determine a small set of important biological features. In the second stage, random forests classification with regard to the selected biological features is applied to identify disease genes. Our extensive experiments show that the proposed SRF approach outperforms the existing feature selection and classification techniques in terms of biological feature selection and disease gene identification.
Usually vibration properties are obtained from frequency response functions or impulse response functions of a system. Since the contact type sensors can affect the characteristics of vibrating systems, the non-contact type sensors such as laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) are being widely used. Currently researches are being carried out in terms of modal analysis using a scanning vibrometer. For the continuous scan; the Chebyshev demodulation (or polynomial) is apparently suggested to extract the mode shapes. With single frequency sinusoidal excitation, this approach is well fitted. In this research, the Chebyshev demodulation technique has been applied to the impact excitation case. The vibration of the tested structure is modeled using impulse response functions. The technique is also adopted to the random excitation case. In order to verify the technique, a simply supported beam was chosen as the test rig. The calculation modules are developed by using MATLAB$\^$(R)/ in WindowsNT$\^$(R)/ environment.
This paper presents a study on the system identification of the in-situ output shaft torque measurement system using a non-contacting magneto-elastic torque transducer installed in a vehicle drivline. The frequency response (transfer) function (FRF) analysis is conducted to interpret the dynamic interaction between the output shaft torque and road side excitation due to the road roughness. In order to identify the frequency response function of vehicle driveline system, two power spectral density (PSD) functions of two random signals: the road roughness profile synthesized from the road roughness index equation and the stationary noise torque extracted from the original torque signal, are first estimated. System identification results show that the output torque signal can be affected by the dynamic characteristics of vehicle driveline systems, as well as the road roughness.
The purpose of this study is to propose the general method for evaluating the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with supplemental response control dampers. We define Lyapunov function of which derivative can be expressed in autoregressive form and evaluate the equivalent damping ratios by using Lyapunov function and its derivative. This Lyapunov function may be called as generalized structural energy. In this study, it is assumed that the response of a structure is stationary random process and control dampers do not affect the modal shapes of a structure, and the structure has proportional damping. Proposed method can be used to get the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with non-linear control dampers such as friction dampers as well as linear control dampers. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method. we evaluate the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with viscous dampers. AMDs. and friction dampers. The equivalent damping ratios from proposed method are compared to those from eigenvalue analysis for linear control dampers. and those from time history analysis for non-linear control dampers. respectively.
To understand plant-pathogen interactions, a complete set of hot pepper genes differentially expressed against pathogen attack was isolated. As an initial step, hundreds of differentially expressed cDNAS were isolated from hot pepper leaves showing non-host resistance against bacterial plant pathogens (Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines and Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae) using differential display reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (DDDRT-PCR) technique. Reverse Northern and Northern blot analyses revealed that 50% of those genes were differentially expressed in pepper loaves during non-host resistance response. Among them, independent genes without redundancy were micro-arrayed for further analysis. Random EST sequence database were also generated from various CDNA libraries including pepper tissue specific libraries and leaves showing non-host hypersensitive response against X. campestris pv. glycines. As a primary stage, thousands of cDNA clones were sequenced and EST data were analyzed. These clones are being spotted on glass slide to study the expression profiling. Results of this study may further broaden knowledge on plant-pathogen interactions.

In this study stochastic analysis of non-linear dynamical systems under ${\alpha}$-stable, multiplicative white noise has been conducted. The analysis has dealt with a special class of ${\alpha}$-stable stochastic processes namely sub-Gaussian white noises. In this setting the governing equation either of the probability density function or of the characteristic function of the dynamical response may be obtained considering the dynamical system forced by a Gaussian white noise with an uncertain factor with ${\alpha}/2$- stable distribution. This consideration yields the probability density function or the characteristic function of the response by means of a simple integral involving the probability density function of the system under Gaussian white noise and the probability density function of the ${\alpha}/2$-stable random parameter. Some numerical applications have been reported assessing the reliability of the proposed formulation. Moreover a proper way to perform digital simulation of the sub-Gaussian ${\alpha}$-stable random process preventing dynamical systems from numerical overflows has been reported and discussed in detail.
Most frequency domain-based approaches assume that structural response should be a Gaussian random process. But a lot of non-Gaussian processes caused by multi-excitation and non-linearity in structural responses or load itself are observed in many real engineering problems. In this study, the effect of non-Normality on fatigue damages are discussed through case study. The accuracy of four frequency domain methods for non-Gaussian processes are compared in the case study. Power-law and Hermite models which are derived for non-Gaussian narrow-banded process tend to estimate fatigue damages less accurate than time domain results in small kurtosis and in case of large kurtosis they give conservative results. Weibull model seems to give conservative results in all environmental conditions considered. Among the four methods, Benascuitti-Tovo model for non-Gaussian process gives the best results in case study. This study could serve as background material for understanding the effect of non-normality on fatigue damages.
Composite materials also known as fiber reinforced plastics have been developed and used in many engineering applications due to their outstanding mechanical properties. Laminated plates as structural components that are made of in composite material are widely used. Therefore, nonlinear response of laminated composite plates modeled with finite elements and excited by stochastic loading is studied. The classical laminated plate theory is used to account for the variation of strains through the thickness for modeling laminated thin plates. Approximate nonlinear random vibration analysis is performed using the method of equivalent linearization to account for material non-linearity.
