Graphite electrodes are used for secondary batteries, fuel cells, and super capacitors. Research is underway to increased the reaction area of graphite electrodes used carbon nanotube (CNT) and porous carbon. CNT is limited to device utilization in order to used a metal catalyst by lack of surface area to improve. In contrast carbon nanowall (CNW) is chemically very stable. So this paper, microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system was used to grow carbon nanowall (CNW) on Si substrate with methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) gases. To find the growth properties of CNW according to the reaction gas ratio, we have changed the methane to hydrogen gas ratios (4:1, 2:1, 1:2, and 1:4). The vertical and surficial conditions of the grown CNW according to the gas ratios were characterized by a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Raman spectroscopy measurements showed structure variations.
Graphene is a monolayer carbon material which consists of $sp^2$ bonding between carbon atoms. Its excellent intrinsic properties allow graphene to be used in various research fields. Many researchers believe that graphene is suitable for electronic device materials due to its high electrical conductivity and carrier mobility. Through chemical doping, n- or p-type graphene can be obtained, and consequently graphene-based devices which have more comparable structure to common semiconductor-based devices can be fabricated. In our research, we introduced the dielectrophoresis process to the chemical doping step in order to improve the effect of chemical doping of graphene selectively. Under 10 kHz and $5V_{pp}$ (peak-to-peak voltage), doping was conducted and the Au nanoparticles were effectively formed, as well as aligned along the edges of graphene. Effects of the selective chemical doping on graphene were investigated through Raman spectroscopy and the change of its electrical properties were explored. We proposed the method to enhance the doping effect in local region of a graphene layer.

Silver salt complex membranes with glassy poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) unexpectedly showed higher propylene permeance than those with rubbery poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) where as neat PMMA is much less permeable to propylene than that of neat PBMA. Such unusual facilitated olefin transport has been systematically investigated by changing the side chain length of polymethacrylates (PMAs) from methyl, ethyl to butyl. The ab initio calculation showed almost the same electron densities of the carbonyl oxygens in the three PMAs, expecting very similar intensity of the interaction between carbonyl oxygen and silver ion. However, the interaction intensity decreases with the length of the alkyl side chain: PMMA > PEMA > PBMA according to wide angle X-ray scattering and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The difference in the interaction intensity may arise from the difference in the hydrophilicity of the three PMAs, as confirmed by the contact angle of water, which determines the concentrations of the ionic constituents of silver salts: free ion, contact ion pair and higher order ionic aggregate. However, propylene solubilities and facilitated propylene transport vary with the side chain length significantly even at the same concentration of the free ion, the most active olefin carrier, suggesting possible difference in the prohibition of the molecular access of propylene to silver ion by the side chains: the steric hindrance. Therefore, it may be concluded that both the hydrophilicity and the steric hindrance associated with the side chain length in the three PMAs are of pivotal importance in determining facilitated olefin transport through polymer/silver salt complex membranes.

The development of cost-effective electrocatalysts with high durability is one of the most important challenges for the commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The durability of the electrocatalyst has been studied in terms of structural change in the active metal and the support. In particular, in fuel cell vehicles, degradation of the carbon-based support is known to have a significant effect on the electrocatalyst deterioration since the start-up/shut-down cycle is frequently repeated. The requirements for the support of the electrocatalyst include high surface area, electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and so on. In this study, we propose the evaluation methods for choosing better support materials and present the physicochemical properties that promising carbon supports should have. Three kinds of carbon materials with different crystallinity are compared. From in-depth study using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and accelerated stress test, it is clearly confirmed that the durability of carbon-supported electrocatalysts is closely related to the physicochemical properties of the carbon supports.
Ternary MoS2/graphene (G)-TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The morphology, phase structure, band gap, and catalytic properties of the prepared samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectrophotometry, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurement. The H2 production efficiency of the prepared catalysts was tested in methanol-water mixture under visible light. MoS2/G-TiO2 exhibited the highest activity for photocatalytic H2 production. For 5 wt.% and 1 wt.% MoS2 and graphene (5MT-1G), the production rate of H2 was as high as 1989 µmol-1h-1. The catalyst 5MT-1G showed H2 production activity that was ~ 11.3, 5.6, and 4.1 times higher than those of pure TiO2, 1GT, and 5MT, respectively. The unique structure and morphology of the MoS2/G-TiO2 photocatalyst contributed to its improved hydrogen production efficiency under visible light.

Pulsed magnetron sputtering of graphite target was employed for deposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. Time-resolved probe measurements of magnetron discharge plasma have been performed. It was shown that the pulsed magnetron discharge plasma density ($∼10^{17}$$m^{-3}$ ) is close to that of vacuum arc cathode sputtering of graphite. Raman spectroscopy was sed to examine DLC films produced at low ( $U_{sub}$ / < 1 kV) pulsed bias voltages applied to the substrate. It has been shown that maximum content of diamond-like carbon in the coating (50-60%) is achieved at energy per deposited carbon atom of $E_{c}$ =100 eV. In spite of rather high percentage of $sp^3$-bonded carbon atoms and good scratch-resistance, the films showed poor adhesion because of absence of ion mixing between the film and the substrates. Electric breakdowns occurring during the deposition of the insulating DLC film also thought to decrease its adhesion.

An epitaxial GaN layer was grown on a cone-shape-patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) (Sample A) and an AlN-buffered PSS (Sample B) with two growth steps under the same process conditions by employing the hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method. We have investigated the characteristics of the GaN layer grown on two kinds of substrates at each growth step. The cross-sectional SEM image of the GaN layer grown on the two types of substrates showed growth states of GaN layers formed during the 1st and 2nd growth steps with different growth durations. Dislocation density was obtained by calculation using the FWHM value of the rocking curve for (002) and (102). Sample A showed 2.62+08E and 6.66+08E and sample B exhibited 5.74+07E and 1.65+08E for two different planes. The red shift was observed is photoluminescence (PL) analysis and Raman spectroscopy results. GaN layers grown on AlN-buffered PSS exhibited better optical and crystallographic properties than GaN layers grown on PSS.

Nano-sized conical-type tungsten(W) field-emitters based on carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are fabricated with the configuration of CNTs/catalyst/buffer/W-tip by adopting various buffer layers, such as TiN, Al, Al/TiN, and Al/hi/TiN. This study focuses on elucidating how the buffer layers affect the structural properties of CNTs and the electron-emission characteristics of CNT-emitters. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) are used to monitor the nanostructures and surface morphologies of all the catalysts and CNTs grown. The crystalline structure of CNTs is also characterized by Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the measurement of field-emission characteristics for all the field-emitters fabricated shows that the emitter using the Al/Ni/TiN stacked buffer reveals the most excellent performances, such as maximum emission current of $202{\mu}A$, threshold field of 2.08V/${\mu}m$, and long-term (up to 24h) stability of emission current.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are directly grown on W-tips at $700^{\circ}C$ using an ICP-CVD method. Sharpening of W-tip is done by electrochemical etch and their diameters are limited to range from $3{\mu}m$ to $5{\mu}m$. Catalysts for CNTs growth are formed by RF and DC co-sputtering systems using Ni and Co. The composition ratio of Ni and Co has been evaluated by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The micro-images of CNTs are monitored by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). It is observed from Raman study that the intensity of the D-peak is increased by increasing the amount of Co catalyst. Furthermore, the measurement of field emission properties of CNTs show that the CNT grown on a single Co catalyst possess the greatest performance such as $V_{th}$=1,115V and $I_{max}=164{\mu}A$.

Graphene has attracted tremendous attention for the last a few years due to it fascinating electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Up to now, several methods have been developed exclusively to prepare graphene, which include micromechanical cleavage, polycrystalline Ni employing chemical vapor deposition technique, solvent thermal reaction, thermal desorption of Si from SiC substrates, chemical routes via graphite intercalation compounds or graphite oxide. In particular, polycrystalline Ni foil and conventional chemical vapor deposition system have been widely used for synthesis of large-area graphene. [1-3] In this study, synthesis of mono-layer graphene on a Ni foil, the mixing ratio of hydrocarbon ($CH_4$) gas to hydrogen gas, microwave power, and growth time were systemically optimized. It is possible to synthesize a graphene at relatively lower temperature ($500^{\circ}C$) than those (${\sim}1000^{\circ}C$) of previous results. Also, we could control the number of graphene according to the growth conditions. The structural features such as surface morphology, crystallinity and number of layer were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and resonant Raman spectroscopy with 514 nm excitation wavelength. We believe that our approach for the synthesis of mono-layer graphene may be potentially useful for the development of many electronic devices.
